A White Man raised in Hubbard, Iowa, which is a Racially Restricted Region with a 98% White population, Kix is “a writer who loves to tell big beating-heart stories about larger-than-life people in precarious situations.” He’s married to a non-white female and places that at the front and conclusion of his new book, You Have to Be Prepared to Die Before You Can Begin to Live - which is a quote from legendary Alabama activist Fred Shuttlesworth. Kix focuses on the Birmingham, Alabama protests in the spring of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. drew national attention to the abuses heaped on black people in a town nicknamed “Bombingham” because of the routine White Terrorism. Children took the starring role in the upheaval as Racist Eugene ‘Bull’ Connor used police canines and fire hoses to brutalize black people.
