Ep 756Top 10 Tom Cruise Films REDUX

E

Countdown #463 Way back in Episode 19* of the show - sometime during the winter months of 2015 - the boys did their first ever countdown focused on an a single actor. That actor has affectionately become known as T to the C among the Countdown Listener Community, but is otherwise referred to as one Tom Cruise. It felt only natural then that if there was any actor that the show would re-do a countdown on, it had to be T to the C, that Hollywood A-Lister who can champion Scientology and jump on as many Oprah couches as he wants, as long as he continues making quality films. So join Wayne in that heady place known as Man-Crush Land, as The Countdown continues ... *Not Episode 4 as Paul suggests during the recording. Ignore his blather! Check out the show's first draft of a website for your one-stop shop for all things related to The Countdown. But if you want more specific directions, find so many more Countdowns - all the way back to Episode 40! - on our Podbean site. The first big-budget, major release of 2024 is here in the form of Argylle, and no-one is more excited for its release than Wayne - he who had it as his most anticipated film of 2024. Ep 749Bonus Ep: Terrifier and Mama Mia! reviews

E

Way back in May of 2023, many of our fine Patrons tuned in to watch or listen to our climatic guest spot on the Livestream for the Cure, as hosted by Nick, Dan and Gerald. During that spot, to raise money for the fight against cancer, we pledged to watch horrendous films that you chose for us. And being the wonderfully, generous people you are, you supported the cause. Those films that we pledged to view were in Wayne's case, Terrifier (2016), and in Paul's, Mama Mia! (2008). This is where we honour that pledge and you get to hear us suffer in the name of charity! Thank you for your support that day, and now enjoy the fruits of that support while Paul is (hopefully) skiing down some Japanese mountains. Ep 748Force of Nature: The Dry 2 review

E

The boys got along to their first advanced screening of the year and it was the big sequel to the massive Australian hit, The Dry, starring Eric Bana. In this one, Detective Aaron Falk returns to help with a disappearance of someone he has a connection with, while an event from his past will help him solve the case. It's better than that synopsis sounds, but does it hold a candle to the original? Find out before its official release date on Feb 8th, as The Countdown continues ... Ep 745The Beekeeper review

E

January is here and with it, the films that studios like to dump into theatres, hoping against hope that they might make some dollars. One such film is the new Jason Statham film as directed by David "Don't Blame Me for Suicide Squad" Ayer and, well, it's making money. As such, the boys considered it their civic duty to see this one and report back on it to you, dear listener ... Have the lads been bamboozled into seeing a poor film> Or have Statham and Ayer combned for that rarest of rare, rare treats: A quality January film? Find out as The Countdown continues ... Ep 744The Top 10 Films of 2023

E

Countdown #457 Here it is. The biggest Ep of the year detailing the very best films of the previous year requires an incredible guest. And that incredible guest is Jason from the Binge Movies Podcast. It also requires a lengthy discussion about the merits (or perhaps, lack thereof) of these films, making for one of the longest Eps in The Countdown's history. (Julio would be proud; Gerald, less so.) Get on board, then, for this in-depth discussion of the best releases to hit cinemas across the year that was 2023. Enjoy the surprising comedies, the frightening horrors, the well-acted dramas and the shocking superhero films that make this most coveted of lists. And as if that's not enough, enjoy Wayne as he somehow underlines the major message from one of the biggest releases of the year - a moment that threatens to completely break this Episode in two ... ... as The Countdown (hopefully) continues ... Please thank Jason by checking out Binge Movies or, heck, head on over to The Slashers podcast where both Jason, Paul and Megan from Spoilerpiece Theatre, join forces to create a show all about the golden age of the Slasher film. Ep 743Godzilla Minus One review

E

The boys finally get along to see a film which has been hitting all the Top 10 lists of 2023, just in time for their own episode of the same. But is this the shot in the arm Kaiju films needed? Or is it more of the same ol' , same ol' when it comes to Godzilla and its decision to chow down on most anything Tokyo-shaped? One of the lads has this as the greatest thing since sliced-bread, while the other is a little more luke-warm. Meanwhile, this Episode took about 73 false starts to get going, as you will hear if you hang around to the end of the recording ... Who is right? Who is wrong? And who will finally get the opening right? Find out as The Countdown continues ... Ep 742Worst 10 Films of 2023

E

Countdown #456 Bravely flying in the face of those who say doing "Worst Of" lists are tacky and inappropriate, Paul and Wayne this week deliver to you their annual PSA in relation to the poorest films of the preceding year. Yes, it's time to name and shame those films which completely fumbled the ball, that defecated in the bed, that thieved us of our hard-earned, and then, in some cases, tried to tell us we wanted more! Every genre from horror to action, comedy to drama by way of superhero cinematic universes feels the brunt of the boys' disappointment and anger in this Ep, so listen in to learn what you should steer well clear of .... or to maybe hear your least favourite films called out ... as The Countdown continues ... Ep 741Society of the Snow review

E

Netflix kicks off the New Year in the best possible way, at least according to Paul, with their release of the based-on-a-true-story, survival epic, Society of the Snow. Wayne, for some inexplicable reason, does not like this type of film, which leads to the first disagreement on the show for 2024 and the provocative use of The Soundboard. But who is right? And who would eat the other without hesitation should they crash anywhere without food? Decide for yourself, as The Countdown continues ... Ep 740Top 10 Television Shows of 2023

E

Countdown #455 The boys, this week, complete their look back at television through 2023 with a countdown of their favourite shows of the year! It was a banner year for television as evidenced by both Paul and Wayne having ten shows and honourable mentions to talk about, making for a jam packed episode. Wayne starts things off controversially and some might suggest his list never recovers, while Paul, meanwhile, stays pretty true to form - both in terms of his list and in keeping Wayne honest with some of his hot takes. In other words, it's what you've come to expect from the podcast, but with plenty of TV to keep you occupied through the early stages of 2024. Ep 739Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom review

E

So the DCEU ends ... like THIS? Join Wayne and Paul as they query why DC and the WB would bother with a final DCEU film that takes zero chances, is completely rote and horrendously predictable, and contains more Mamoa "Ya-HOO!"s than could possibly be considered safe for human hearing. And yet, one of the boys quite liked Lost Kingdom and the other goes to town on it. Which is whom? And does anyone care given this is turning into another box office bomb? Find out as The Countdown continues ... Ep 738The Worst Television Shows of 2023

E

Countdown #454 Having watched enough of the "idiot box" to split the traditional Best and Worst of the previous year's television into two episodes, the boys this week countdown their least favourite shows of the year that was 2023. There's plenty of questions asked of Marvel, while Paul takes aim at a master of horror's latest foray into television, and Wayne, incredibly, has harsh words for a reality show based around MILFs! Ep 737Rebel Moon Part 1 reiview

E

Zack Snyder returns to our screens with his rejected idea for Star Wars courtesy of Netflix. And since Zach Snyder is always going to Zach Snyder, Wayne and Paul have volunteered to determine whether this is one of the occasions when Zach should have Snydered, rather than Zaching his way into some very, very low critical reactions. Will Wayne appreciate the visual flair in Rebel Moon? Can Paul forgive the short-comings of its script? And, at the end of the day, is Disney - in the place of George Lucas - going to sue themselves a Zach? Find out as The Coundown continues ... Ep 736Top 10 Last 10: Goodbye 2023 Edition

E

Countdown #453 It's Top 10 Last 10 time, as the boys look back on the latter parts of 2023 and mini-review 10 films each that are first time watches, but otherwise have no linking criterion. Of course, this is The Countdown, so: - said films are ranked from worst to best - Wayne says inappropriate things - Paul Soundboards it up in response to said inappropriate things, while honouring the late, great Andre Braugher; and - there is more French musketeer action than you can poke a sword at. (To be fair this one is not a usual staple of the show, but worth pointing out nonetheless.) Ep 735Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget review

E

Do you remember that film about a bunch of stop motion chickens pulling off a Great Escape-ish escape from the chicken farm where they'll all eventually become dinner? Well, Netflix certainly does, and they've invested in bringing the sequel to your television screens some 23 years later. Paul and Wayne have checked it out and at least one of them is not chicken in voicing their disdain for the film. In fact, the Negatron theme gets trotted out amid many swipes at animated children's film in general, though all should be relieved to know there is not one reference to breasts - chicken or otherwise - in this review. Who will be the hard to please reviewer and who will attempt to defend the chickens as they Mission Impossible their way into our hearts? Find out as The Coundown continues ... Ep 733Leave the World Behind review

E

It's December and the releases to theatre has slowed up (a least for a week), so Paul and Wayne have turned to Netflix for new content, and were pleased to find the hardly advertised "Leave the World Behind" waiting to be reviewed. Julia Roberts joins the suavest actor there is , Mahershala Ali, and Ethan Hawke, to bring this apocalyptic thriller helmed by the Mr Robot guy and based on some very short novel no-one had ever heard of before, to your couches as organised by the stellar people at Netlfix. Ep 732Top 10 Films That Would Not Get Made Today

E

Countdown #451 Is this the episode that ends the show? That's what regular listeners might be asking as Paul flies very close to the sun by letting Wayne off the podcast leash to discuss the Top 10 Films That Would Not Get Made Today! Truly, this one is worth listening to just to hear Wayne's description of his Number 7 - a film which Paul simply cannot believe exists (even if it was made back in the '50s). And beyond that, there's plenty of the usual banter, questionable jokes, and cameos from The Soundboard to prove the boys are back in the same room and all is again fine in the world. Ep 731Silent Night (2023) review

E

John Woo explodes back into the cinemas of the western world with Silent Night - a revenge action thriller which, somehow, neither Paul nor Wayne realised was dialogue-less until some 20 minutes into the movie. Being big fans of the Woo and with a kick-ass and bloodthirsty trailer, the boys were all kinds of excited about an action Christmas movie following in the foot-steps of Die Hard and last year's Violent Night. But did Silent Night fill their stockings with the Woo-laden goodies? Or was one of the hosts very Grinchian about his experience of this film? Learn the answers to these questions and more, as The Countdown continues ... Ep 730MCU Phase 4 Ranked!

E

Countdown #450 It's the 450th Countdown this week, and the boys are celebrating by taking aim at Marvel's Phase 4 and ranking all the films and television shows from it. Or at least Paul is. Wayne continues to defend most forms of mediocrity. Though at least some of that may be attributable to him being late low with an illness in the week leading up to this recording. Which means the guys aren't in the same room, and worse, no Soundboard for such an important occasion *cue anguish the world over* But that won't stop the guys from doing their level best to disagree, banter and entertain - something they've been striving to do for night on nine years now. There's no better time than to join the Countdown ... unless you're a hardcore MCU fan. In which case, see you next week ... as The Countdown continues ... Ep 729Invincible Season 2A review

E

Wayne has COVID so all plans were scuttled in the 450th week of The Countdown. Which means instead of getting a review of Napoleon, you get a review of the first half Prime Video's Invincible. Making it's return after almost 2.5 years (discounting the Atom Eve special), has Robert Kirkman's story lost it's way? Or does it double down on the first season's greatness? Either way, one host is picking at the show's seams while the other seems very happy with what he's gotten. But when final scores are delivered, who is the real critic? Find out as The Countdown continues ... Ep 728Top 10 Amazon Prime Video Watches

E

Countdown #449 Paul thought it would be an easy countdown to put together but Paul thought wrong... Join the boys this week as they scour the far corners of the massive streaming service which is Amazon's Prime Video for the very best things to watch there (in Australia). Film and television series are fair game, and the guys are not limiting themselves to Prime Originals, so get ready to add a whole lot more to your watchlist. Who is recommending things he hasn't even finished? Who has more Aussie productions on their list? And who might have broken new ground in NOT choosing anything that is a straight horror this week? You can probably guess the answer to all of these questions if you're a regular listener, but if you're not, or you just want to be sure, get on board for another epic episode, as The Countdown continues ... Ep 727Thanksgiving review

E

This week Wayne is wearing his wussy-whiny pants and refusing to see a horror film, so Paul ventures to the cinema with his brother to see Eli Roth's Grindhouse inspired flick, Thanksgiving. Wayne calls Paul and people who enjoy such films as "sickos", but Paul bravely soldiers on to bring you a review of this brand new release, just in time for the North American holiday. Can Paul see past some gory kills when rating a film? And can Wayne get that such things may appeal to some? Find out as The Countdown continues ... Ep 726Top 10 Books That Changed Our Lives

E

Countdown #448 Find out more (any maybe too much?) about the boys this week as they countdown the top 10 books which have somehow changed their lives. As you might imagine, this opens the door for some interesting discussions about turning points in the lads' lives, while also diving into a medium of learning and entertainment which has barely been touched up on 447 previous countdowns. Part of this was because Wayne was reluctant to expose his lack of reading to the world, but the reality is, he has plenty to say, and most of it - for once - is not profanity-laced calls of a ludicrous nature :P Paul, meanwhile, is in his element - though it turns out his element is far more fantastical than Wayne's, in what might be an unexpected and intriguing turn of events for long term listeners. Ep 725The Marvels review

E

This week, the boys return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the second film in Phase 5, to determine whether the rumours of the MCU's demise have been greatly exaggerated. But in a film featuring some out of left field scenes and one of the worst villains the MCU has ever trotted out, can the rest of The Marvels rise about its impediments to produce something memorable? Or does it continue the downward spiral of the MCU? Not surprisingly, there's a major difference of opinion, but who falls on what side of that divide ... as The Countdown continues ... E

Episode #447 Wayne gets to dine out this week on his favourite music genre - Pop! - while Paul suffers in his jocks just a little bit as they countdown the Top 10 Pop Songs of the 21st Century. As if Paul's discomfort isn't reason enough to listen, Wayne somehow manages to stick to the brief(!), meaning all his choices are actual Pop songs. He still defends his idiot choices from the '90s episode though, so don't worry, there's still plenty of banter to enjoy. Can Paul conjure a half decent list? Ep 721Killers of the Flower Moon review

E

Every so often, an established podcast will post content that changes the landscape of its own journey. This is one of those times. Join Paul and Wayne as they review legendary film-maker Martin Scorsese's latest crime drama epic - even as one of them breaks ranks to take a steaming dump all over Killer of the Flower Moon. Witness the potential beginning of the end of The Countdown as a podcast, as that co-host undoes 8.5 years of established credibility in one foul swoop, while the second co-host tries to throw himself over the grenade carelessly dropped by the other to limit the damage that stands to be done. Ep 720Top 10 Goriest Film Scenes

E

Countdown #445 It's Halloween, so it's time for The Countdown to bring the horror! Against all the odds, Paul has somehow convinced Wayne to get coated in (figurative) blood and countdown the top 10 goriest film scenes of all time! As regular listeners might imagine, Wayne takes to this challenge like a cat to water, moaning and complaining the whole time, while regularly reminding Paul and other horror fans like him how messed up they are. Of course, Paul delights in calling out Wayne as a precious snowflake and rags on his choices, meaning the stage is set for a classic episode of the show. But, please, be WARNED: Some of the descriptions in this Ep are extremely R-rated and listeners of a sensitive disposition might be too grossed out to continue listening.
