S1 Ep 21Episode #21: Kala Flynn - The Power of Harnessing Your Energy
With over two decades of coaching to her name, Kala Flynn’s journey began in the early 90s long before the more recent rise of coaching. She trained in counselling and later coaching, NLP, and psychometric assessment tools and has since gone on to become a highly sought-after coach, author, mentor and speaker. Kala was recruited to participate in Ashridge Business School’s first coaching masters course where she completed the five-year course in just two years. The course was a life-changer for her, opening her eyes to all there was to learn, and she knew she had found the vocation that makes her heart sing. Meanwhile, events in her personal life were challenging and a period of illness and recovery led her to compile much of the knowledge she had gathered over the years into a book - The Power of Human Energy. The book became a hit with 5-star reviews pouring in on Amazon, and today Kala’s programmes, sessions and masterclasses provide an introduction to these ideas and how they may be fruitfully applied within all sorts of settings. Kala is currently working on her next book provisionally titled The Power of Human Connection. In this episode, we talk about:Diving under the bonnet - the realisation that it's okay to challenge people and coaching isn’t about being nice. Her journey through the publishing world - traditional publishing vs self-publishing, and where her book took her. The ins and outs of team coaching - the importance of having fun and managing the energy of the session. Her personal struggles - how adversity gave her strength and insight, taking her listening and inquiry into deeper places. Plus, we discuss raising children alone and the joy of always being curious. S1 Ep 20Episode #20: Giovanna Capozza - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of the Coaching World
Giovanna Capozza is the co-founder of Blue Hive Health and a Master Life Coach, Spiritual Teacher, Mind/Body Expert and Podcast Host. She dedicated most of her twenties to exploring what makes us sick and what helps us heal, and as part of this she grew a thriving alternative medicine practice. But in 2012, suffering from caregivers fatigue, she left her practice behind and found herself on an extended trip in Mexico reassessing her life direction. From there she trained to be a coach and used what she had learned from her alternative medicine practice to build a thriving coaching business. Alongside this, she went on to work on the teams of two industry-leading coaches, including The Prosperous Coach co-author Rich Litvin, and has a unique perspective on the world of coaching. More recently, her own health crisis has brought her back to the world of health care. In this episode, Giovanna talks candidly about her relationship with the coaching world and realisation that coaching alone was not the complete picture for her. Giovanna’s journey includes the launch a podcast, a memoir, and a talk that involved sharing the details of a previous abusive relationship with a room full of hundreds of people. Her interests have evolved from sickness, to relationships, to trauma and anxiety. Before Covid struck, Giovanna was on the brink of opening a new wellness centre in Toronto. She has since moved her venture online and the culmination of this work can be found at www.bluehivehealth.com. Her new wellness private practice is at www.wellwoman.ca. In this episode, we talk about:The trap of chasing high-ticket clients - why it’s okay to drop your prices and the pitfalls of measuring success by income. Her guide to coaching yourself through situations that don't feel right, including when your coaching business is what doesn’t feel right.Understanding that being a coach is being a business person.Coming home to yourself - the realisation that looking for more also meant looking back.Plus, we touch on the rarely discussed parts of the coaching world that feel... well... a bit icky. For more information about Giovanna, visit: www.giovannacapozza.com and www.wellwoman.caFor more information about Giovanna’s new wellness centre in Toronto: www.bluehivehealth.comListen to Giovanna’s talk here: https://youtu.be/zmuNYSh-KBc For information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/communityThings and people we mentioned (that you might be interested in):~12: Gay and Katie Hendricks: https://hendricks.com/~12: Giovanna’s Podcast with the Hendricks’: https://youtu.be/8rf3gibbYy8 ~12: Arielle Ford: https://www.arielleford.com~13: The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0061735361/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_nVfLFb93CP6KX~15: Tony Robbins: https://www.tonyrobbins.com/ ~18: Enneagram Types: https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/~18: ICF Certifications: https://coachfederation.org/icf-credential ~22: The Prosperous Coach by Steve Chandler and Rich Litvin: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Prosperous-Coach-Increase-Income-Clients/dp/1600250300~22: Steve Chandler: https://www.stevechandler.com/~22: Rich Litvin: https://richlitvin.com/~25: Giovanna’s Podcast She Rises: https://giovannacapozza.com/podcast/~26: Giovanna’s Book Lovesick https://giovannacapozza.com/lovesick-book/~30: Blue Hive Health: www.bluehivehealth.com ~47: Giovanna’s Book Lovesick https://giovannacapozza.com/lovesick-book/~51: Giovanna’s speech: https://youtu.be/zmuNYSh-KBc~58: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs

S1 Ep 19Episode #19: Chris Joseph - How to Become an Overnight Success in 10 years: From Ponzi Scheme Ruin to Six-Figure Coaching Months
ESat atop a Welsh mountain in 2007 in a moment of depression and despair, Chris Joseph had the first in a series of instances of clarity that would eventually lead him to coaching. On the brink of a meltdown, he knew his Ph.D. in Computational Mechanics was no longer serving him. Buddhism, yoga and mediation became the elixir for him and soon he found he couldn't sleep with excitement at the discoveries he was making. His life changed when he trained to become a mindfulness teacher with Breathworks, and Chris went on to complete his Ph.D. and launch his first coaching practice. But it wasn't a success and in the end he gave it up. His extraordinary journey includes a multitude of highs and lows, from making £10,000 a month in passive income to losing it all to a fraudulent trader. Now he’s back coaching and headed for a seven-figure year with his highly successful practice. In this episode, we talk about:Where his practice went wrong the first time round. Why the inner work is so important - understanding that you can only take people as far as you can go yourself. Why a true insight always comes packaged with an action - an ‘outsight’ or an ‘outer action’.How to invite an individual to coaching - how to make it feel like a gift to the individual and not a request for yourself.Alongside the practical we get into some big topics: death, impermanence, the importance of play and the effects of all these on our lives. And it is a total pleasure to be in a space with Chris' beautiful open-heartedness.For more information about Chris, visit www.christopherjoseph.co.uk, find him on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/drchrisjoseph/ or on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chrisjoseph.uk/ For information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.Music by My Good Man William listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/communityThings and people we mentioned (that you might be interested in):~8: Rich Waterman: https://www.richwaterman.com/ ~10: The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt: https://www.happinesshypothesis.com/~12: Michael Neill: https://www.michaelneill.org/~12: Dick Bettinger: http://3principlesmentoring.com/index.html ~12: Sydney Banks: https://sydbanks.com/~14: Breathworks: https://www.breathworks-mindfulness.org.uk/~20: Unleash the Power Within with Tony Robbins: https://www.tonyrobbins.com/events/unleash-the-power-within/ ~25: Unleash the Power Within with Tony Robbins: https://www.tonyrobbins.com/events/unleash-the-power-within/~26: The Coaching Academy: https://www.the-coaching-academy.com~26: Richard Bandler: https://richardbandler.com~26: John LaValle: https://www.nlplifetraining.com/trainers/john-lavalle~26: The Prosperous Coach by Steve Chandler and Rich Litvin: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Prosperous-Coach-Increase-Income-Clients/dp/1600250300 ~26: Breathworks: https://www.breathworks-mindfulness.org.uk/~27: Simon Coulson: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Prosperous-Coach-Increase-Income-Clients/dp/1600250300~27: Peter Thompson: https://peterthomson.com/ ~27: Michael Neill: https://www.michaelneill.org/ ~27: Project Kairos with Rich Litvin: https://richlitvin.com/kairos/~30: Steve Hardison video: https://youtu.be/0Tine-9dz-Y~32: Rich Waterman: https://www.richwaterman.com/ ~33: Three Principles: https://threeprinciplesfoundation.org/ ~33: Eckhart Tolle: https://eckharttolle.com/ ~33: Bryon Katie: https://thework.com/ ~33: The Coaching Academy: https://www.the-coaching-academy.com~33: Tony Robbins: https://www.tonyrobbins.com/ ~37: Crazy Good by Steve Chandler: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1600250343/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_JMAKFbP0PYJ7E ~43: The War of Art by Steven Pressfield and Shawn Coyne: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1936891026/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_xlBKFbG7XW11B~50: Loom: https://www.loom.com~1.11: Cardiff University: https://www.cardiff.ac.uk ~1.29: Wealth Warrior by Steve Chandler: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1600250408/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_EFCKFbY9VGH7M~1.29: Time Warrior by Steve Chandler: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1600250378/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_kICKFbB90WCJN~1.29: The Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1608681890/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_8RCKFbEEPT36Y~1.31: The Meaning Revolution by Fred Kofman : https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1524760730/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_BsSKFbKHQ773N~1.45: Chris’s contact details: email address: [email protected], LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drchrisjoseph/, Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chrisjoseph.uk/~1.50: Steve Hardison: https://theultimatecoach.com/

S1 Ep 18Episode #18: Robbie on... how I think about new work, group coaching programmes and the new Coach's Journey Community
Well, this is fun. Here’s another episode featuring me, Robbie Swale. No guests this time, and no content from the past, either: this all new and includes some exciting announcements, as well as insights and stories I haven’t shared before from my experience of creating new ways of working in my coaching business. In particular, I talk about:The lessons I’ve learned from the three group coaching programmes I’ve launched: how do we start a group coaching programme? How do we sell one to people? The four criteria I use when deciding whether to create a new way of working in my business. And, most excitingly, I launch the new Coach’s Journey Community, a new way to work with me, starting from just £10 a month. That community is wrapped up along with the new opportunity to support the Coach’s Journey financially. If you value this work that I’m doing and want to make it easier for me to continue it, and give it the potential to grow faster and further, you might want to consider becoming a Supporter. But don’t worry, the podcast will always be free and there’s no presure at all from me to support the podcast financially. That’s only part of the episode, though - creating the Coach’s Journey Community and a new one-on-one engagement that I’m running with several clients this autumn made me really think about how and when I create new ways of working with clients. In this episode, I’ve tried to really share how I think about creating new ways of working, including why I’m excited about this one, and all kinds of things that might be valuable to you on your journey as a coach. If there’s anything I didn’t cover or anything you want to ask, let me know and maybe I’ll do a follow-up episode answering questions! For information about my wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.To read more about supporting The Coach’s Journey, or to become a Supporter or a Community Member, visit https://www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people I mentioned (that you might be interested in):~5: My article, ‘Jordan Peterson Is Not Evil and Why That Matters’ - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/jordan-peterson-evil-why-matters-robbie-swale/~10: My article, ‘How I Became A Full Time Coach Less Than Two Years After Finishing My Training’ on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-i-became-full-time-coach-less-than-two-years-after-robbie-swale~10: My 200th LinkedIn Article: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/lessons-from-200-linkedin-articles-out-robbie-swale/~13: Phil Bolton and on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-2-phil-bolton-from-forensic-accountant-to-the-go-to-career-coach-in-london-and-on-to-work-with-ceos-mds-and-founders~13: Mike Toller: https://www.michaeltollercoaching.co.uk/~13: Vegard Olsen: https://coachingpartner.net/cp/en/vegard-olsen-2/~14: Joel Monk on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-6-joel-monk-conversations-at-the-cutting-edge-of-coaching & The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Leap-Conquer-Hidden-Level/dp/0061735361~16: Rich Litvin and The Prosperous Coach: https://richlitvin.com/the-prosperous-coach/~16: My article, 6 Reasons Why Hiring A Coach Is The Most Important Thing For You To Do If You Want A Successful Coaching Business: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/writing/6-reasons-why-hiring-a-coach-is-the-most-important-thing-for-you-to-do-if-you-want-a-successful-coaching-business~20: Minor Arias on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-3-minor-arias-living-by-design-glz56~22: Warren Buffet’s 25 things game - see Number 2, here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/15-ways-transform-your-relationship-time-get-more-done-robbie-swale/~26: Kristen Kosinski on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-7-kristen-kosinski-power-of-being-truly-seen-with-all-your-messiness~33: My article, The Pioneering Women of Our Age on my website: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/writing/2018/9/10/the-pioneering-women-of-our-age and on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/pioneering-women-our-age-robbie-swale/~35: Katie Harvey on the podcast: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-1-katie-harvey-14000-hours-of-coaching-being-part-of-the-uk-coaching-vanguard-and-being-a-generalist-coach~36: The Genius Accelerator Group Coaching Programme: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/the-genius-accelerator~44: Jordan Hall: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMzT-mdCqoyEv_-YZVtE7MQ and more about the Zone of Genius and Hall’s influence on my thinking about that in the introduction to The Power To Choose: https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/writing/2019/12/30/the-power-to-choose-preview~55: My brother. S1 Ep 17Episode #17: Cathy Presland - From Government Adviser to Three Principles Coach: The Search for Something More Human
ECathy is a former international economist and policy adviser turned three principles coach. For over twenty years she was an advisor to governments and international organisations around the world, including seven years as a development economist in Southern Africa. In her mid-40s, she left a job she loved for reasons she cannot describe. Having previously dipped into the teachings of Michael Neill, it took a challenge from a mastermind partner to prompt her to take another look at coaching. She went on to train in Micheal Neill’s Supercoach Academy and today works with clients in leadership roles and in the arena of social change. In this episode, we talk about:Why we lose our way when we talk about politics. The joy of making it up. How she structures her coaching packages and the great freedom of making it up as you go along.Listening for signals. And, the paradoxical nature of it. How determining what to pay attention to and what to ignore really comes back to the question of ‘Am I being my higher self?’.The things we get too attached to: our lived experience, the personal nature of creation and worshipping the god of intellect.Plus, the age-old debate about which way the forks go in the dishwasher - when it matters and when it really doesn’t. And, the simplicity at the heart of parenting how its really just about pouring love on your child..For more information about Cathy, visit: www.cathypresland.comFor information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.For more information on the new training from Marcia Reynolds (the guest in Episode #14), which Robbie mentioned in the introduction, visit https://coach.wbecs.com/Marcia-Reynolds/a182301Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings we talked about that you might find interesting:~18: Dave Snowden’s Cynefin Framework: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynefin_framework~32: Michael Neill: https://www.michaelneill.org/~42: Michael Neill Training programmes: https://www.michaelneill.org/sci/~44: Syd Banks: http://sydbanks.com/~45: The Three Principles: https://3pgc.org/~1.05: Jonathan Haidt: https://jonathanhaidt.com/~1.05: Jonathan Haidt’s The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Righteous-Mind-Divided-Politics-Religion/dp/0141039167~1.05: Jonathan Haidt’s The Coddling of the American Mind: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coddling-American-Mind-Intentions-Generation/dp/0141986301/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+coddling+of+the+american+mind&qid=1601048128&s=books&sr=1-1~1.06: Jonathan Haidt Quote: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/645384-morality-binds-and-blinds-it-binds-us-into-ideological-teams~1.09: Jordan Hall: https://www.youtube.com/c/JordanGreenhall/featured~1.26: Rich Litvin: https://richlitvin.com/~1.45: Robert Holden quote: https://tendingjoy.com/blogs/tending-joy/god-spoke-today-in-flowers~1.52: The War of Art by Steven Pressfield: https://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Art-Through-Creative-Battles/dp/1936891026~1.52: Robert Holden: https://www.robertholden.com/~1.54: Celtic Goddess/Sovereignty article: http://dangerouswomenproject.org/2016/11/15/the-dangerous-women-of-irish-;mythology/~2.01: The Inside-Out Revolution by Michael Neill: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inside-Out-Revolution-Thing-Change-Forever/dp/1781800790~2.01: The Space Within by Michael Neill: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Space-Within-Finding-Your-Back/dp/1781806489/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=michael+neill&qid=1600694112&s=books&sr=1-4~2.01: Michael Neill’s Supercoach Academy: http://www.supercoachacademy.com/~2.02: The Three Principles YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaY2LdDLITzIlszwA8ubVxg

And, he loves the practice of selling, so much so that his upcoming book, The Art of Honorable Sales, is a love letter to the process. In this episode, we talk about:Klaus and the Buddha - the characters that show up in his coaching and the roles they play. The practice of raising your rates - why there is a particular time as a coach to set a rate and stick to it.Sales as a spiritual practice - how to stop holding your nose through the sales conversation and the false choice between selling skilfully and living with honour. The magic questions to ask at the end of the enrolment process - how to find the tension that leads to commitment.Plus, we walk through an 'honourable' sales process and there's an exclusive offer to read the Beta version of Toku’s book before it comes out.For more information about Toku, visit: www.unexecutive.com.For information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people we mentioned that you might be interested in:~12: Rich Litvin Intensives: https://richlitvin.com/intensive-rli/~12: Toku’s Coaches Rising Podcast: https://www.coachesrising.com/podcast/transformative-enrolment-moving-beyond-yes-and-no/~30: The Prosperous Coach by Rich Litvin and Steve Chandler: https://theprosperouscoach.com/praise/~30: Jason Goldberg: http://www.thejasongoldberg.com/~30: Steve Chandler: https://www.stevechandler.com/~35: Hans Philips: https://www.ontoco.com/~39: Toku’s Coaching Dojo: https://samuraicoachingdojo.com/~57: Toku’s Coaching Dojo: https://samuraicoachingdojo.com/~1.59: Toku’s No Woman Vision Quest: https://www.kendracunov.com/ - https://www.kendracunov.com/no-man-diet/, http://unexecutive.com/no-woman-vision-quest/~2.00: A beta version of Toku’s book: http://unexecutive.com/sell-with-honor~2.01: Toku’s Coaching Mastermind: https://unexecutive.lpages.co/embodied-coach~2.03: Ben Allen: https://www.tonicbooks.online~2:03: Matt Thieleman: https://medium.com/@thieleman1~2.03: Partnership work with Matt Thieleman and Atlas: https://www.linkedin.com/company/project-atlasq/~2:04: Christina Salerno: https://www.s-l.xyz/

S1 Ep 14Episode #14: Marcia Reynolds - Becoming the world's #5 Coaching Guru, being ICF President and writing *another* book about coaching
EFor Marcia Reynolds, coaching evolved as a highly effective learning tool, discovered through her work training leaders in the corporate world. She is now a world-renowned expert on coaching ranked #5 on Global Gurus’ list of coaching thought-leaders, has delivered programs and coached leaders in 41 countries, and has written four coaching books. She also turned 20 in jail and credits her transformation, at least in part, to the women she did time with. From the rabbit hole of drug abuse to achieving multiple master’s degrees, her first ‘tough coach’ was her cellmate who taught her to get out there and make a difference in the world.Marcia witnessed the rise in coaching ‘as a thing’ first hand. She trained as a coach in the mid-90s and was one of the first assessors for the International Coaching Federation and for training school, Coach U. She was also a founding member of the ICF where she went on to be president for over two years. In this episode, we find out Marcia offers so many insights from her years of experience that coaches at all levels with find things to take and use in their own practice. In particular, we talk about:Why now is the time to shut up and listen. Why coaching is the best learning technology we have. Why mastery is the deepening of presence not the perfection of skills and the importance of receiving as opposed to listening in great coaching. What to do if a client says they want a plan (and why making the plan with them is not always the most powerful thing to do). And, as Marcia launches her fourth book on coaching Coach the Person, Not the Problem, we find out what compelled her to write another book about coaching.Plus, some myth-busting about the things we think we can’t do in coaching and a story that features a snake and a roadrunner… That’s right, a snake and a roadrunner! For those who want to learn more about Marcia’s forthcoming Breakthrough Coaching Training, register for the free 90-minute masterclass here: https://coach.wbecs.com/Marcia-Reynolds/a182301For more information about Marcia, visit: www.covisioning.com or find her on Twitter: www.twitter.com/MarciaReynolds or LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/marciareynolds.For more information about Marcia’s recent book, visit www.coachtheperson.com.For information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people we mentioned (that you might be interested in):~5: Time to Think by Nancy Kline: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Time-Think-Listening-Ignite-Human/dp/0706377451~5: Effective Modern Coaching by Myles Downey: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Effective-Modern-Coaching-Myles-Downey/dp/190779476X~9: The International Coach Federation (ICF): https://coachfederation.org/~13: Coach U Training School: https://www.coachu.com/~13: CTI: https://coactive.com/~14: Fran Fisher: https://www.franfishercoach.com/~20: Marcia’s Memoir, Unexpected Angels: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Unexpected-Angels-Month-Journey-Light-ebook/dp/B0047GN9M4~ 21: Marcia’s TED Talks: https://www.ted.com/talks/dr_marcia_reynolds_dr_marcia_reynolds_how_to_handle_precocious_women_jan_2018~25: Marcia’s most recent book: https://coachtheperson.com~35: The Association of Coach Training Organisations (ACTO): https://actoonline.org/~38: Harriett Simon Salinger: http://www.hssalinger.com/~38: Julius Ordonez: https://www.linkedin.com/in/julius-ordonez-mcc-7948a911/~39: WBECs coaching demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2z_mvuEXPQ~43: The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coaching-Habit-Less-Change-Forever/dp/0978440749~46: Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahnemann: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thinking-Fast-Slow-Daniel-Kahneman/dp/0141033576~46: Michael Gazzaniga: https://people.psych.ucsb.edu/gazzaniga/michael/~47: John Dewey: https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/How_We_Think.html?id=6-fof53Kq00C&redir_esc=y~48: Deb Barnard, Relational Dynamics 1st: https://relationaldynamics1st.co.uk/meet-the-team/~48: Byron Katie: https://thework.com/~49: Gretchen Rubin: https://gretchenrubin.com/~50: Marcia’s blog post referencing Straight Talk, Real Talk and Blunt Talk: https://covisioning.com/can-you-just-shut-up/~1.14: Shari Geller: https://www.sharigeller.ca/~ 1.16: Marcia’s three minute Goal Tending video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9sH3DrcCgE~1.22: Einstein quote: ‘If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask.’~1.33: Marcia’s Books: https://covisioning.com/books/

S1 Ep 13Episode #13: Robbie on... everything I have learned about podcasting so far (with help from Adam Hulme)
A couple of months ago, my friend and former client Adam Hulme asked me if we could catch up, as he was in the process of creating a new podcast. He wanted to ask me what I had learned from the first few months of The Coach’s Journey Podcast. I decided to record the conversation and release it as an episode, as I knew that Adam wouldn’t be the last person to ask how I made my decisions about creating a podcast. So this episode is structured around the brilliant set of questions that Adam brought to me, about how I went about creating this podcast, what I have learned, what I would advise other people to do, and what I might do differently if I started again. In particular, I talk about:How I structure my interviews (and what I have done to try and make them as useful to listeners as possible).Loads of the nitty gritty detail: RSS feeds, editing, hosting, gear/tech setup and more.My three ‘must do’s if you are creating a podcast. And you get to meet Adam, and great coach and dynamic entrepreneur, and hear about his new podcast (with co-host Kerry Hearsey), Two Coach Confidence.Of course I’ve only made 13 podcast episodes to date, but I hope that at the very least what I have shared in this episode and via the links below will help some people shortcut the research they need to do and - even better - help people feel empowered to get out there and make something cool. For information about my wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.For more about Adam visit https://mycoachforlife.com/, and to listen to his podcast Two Coach Confidence (which he hosts along with Kerry Hearsey), visit: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1071241Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people I mentioned (that you might be interested in):~4: The Joe Rogan Experience: http://podcasts.joerogan.net/ ~5: The Jordan B Peterson Podcast: https://www.jordanbpeterson.com/podcast/~6: Squarespace and a discount code: https://www.squarespace.com/coupons~9: Mums In Business Association: https://www.mumsinbusinessassociation.com/~9: Kerry Hearsey from Two Coach Confidence: https://kerryhearsey.com/~14: The Tim Ferriss Show: http://tim.blog/podcast~26: Tim Ferris’s blog about building a podcast: https://tim.blog/2016/04/11/tim-ferriss-podcast-business/~26: Tim Ferris’s page of podcast gear: https://tim.blog/podcast-gear/~26: The video I mentioned (made by Pat Flynn) about how to edit a podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcUBZHOljzU~27: The gear I bought: Audio Technica ATR2100-USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone (not on Amazon.co.uk right now); mic covers (apparently help with sound): https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B019OO4IY6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1; some wired headphones to plug into my mic (so you can hear yourself - I wanted to get some special ones for this): https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07Q724CXS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. S1 Ep 12Episode #12: Robbie on... three of the most important parts of any coach's journey: commitment, creating it and doing your own work
This is another episode of the podcast where I (Robbie Swale) share some of my thoughts. Like in episode 8, I’m going back to some content I previously created and sharing it again here as a podcast episode. As I listen back (sometimes for the first time), I also provideupdates, extra ideas and extra links as I go.The content I (re)share in this episode is what I created when I sat down to think about this question: what have I learned about the most important parts, aspects, shifts or stages that coaches almost always go through if they are going to create a sustainable, successful coaching business, whatever that means for them?So many of the ideas that have been most helpful for me in my journey are contained in this episode; in some ways these videos turned out to be a summary of what I had learned from the first three years of having transforming people’s lives as my work.In particular, I talk about:Why you need commitment if you are going to create a coaching business in line with your integrity (and why confidence is a con). The power of the shift to embodying the belief that you can create your own coaching business and how to make that shift. The many, many, many ways that doing your own work is fundamental to life as a coach, including what counts as doing work on yourself.Within that there are so many little details and nuggets in here, including: why I think the Prosperous Coach has been such an important book for so many coaches; how we slip into feeling under threat in our coaching work and how to move back into a sense of trust; and why, confusingly, making a commitment frees you rather than trapping you. Oh, and I dictate two invitations that any coach can use to jump-start their coaching business when they need to. S1 Ep 11Episode #11: Coaching During Coronavirus with Katie Harvey
These are strange times to be alive, and that includes being alive and working as a coach. When I heard that Katie Harvey, who has racked up over 14,000 hours of coaching and 13 years of supporting other coaches, was putting together her thoughts on how to coach during a time like this, I invited her back on the podcast straight away.In this episode, Katie and I speak about the various ways that our coaching and our practices have changed or been affected by the coronavirus outbreak, and give some advice and suggestions to other coaches for how to survive and even thrive amidst the uncertainty: as individuals, in our coaching practices, and as an industry. In particular, we talk about:- How, more than perhaps ever before, coaches have a shared context with their clients, and the implications of this for our work.- How to manage the start of a coaching conversation, the client’s agenda and the need to address the greater context.- How to deal with technological problems when coaching online.- The implications for coaches as self-employed entrepreneurs, and in particular the importance of questioning our assumptions around what this will mean for our businesses. And we finish with a conversation about the opportunity that the current situation presents for coaches individually, and for the coaching industry as a whole. As Katie says, ‘The opportunity for coaching here is absolutely huge: it’s up to every one of us to take the opportunity to help our profession grow in whatever way lights your fire.‘For more information about Katie, email her at [email protected] information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people we mentioned (that you might be interested in):~6: The preview of my book, which I have shared in case it may help you or someone you know in these times of uncertainty: The Power To Choose Preview - https://www.robbieswalecoaching.com/writing/2020/3/23/why-am-i-sharing-parts-of-my-forthcoming-book-the-power-to-choose~6: The latest articles in my blog: Things Get Broken by the Dark Times. S1 Ep 10Episode #10: Marianne Craig - Founding Firework Coaching, Questioning Everything and Where Were the Coaches When the Banks Went Down?
EMarianne Craig is a master coach and the co-founder of Firework Coaching Company, home of the renowned and proven Firework framework for helping people change career. From a young age, Marianne realised the value of questioning everything, but that only started to become her profession in the midst of what Marianne calls a fulfillment crisis. She was listening to BBC Woman’s Hour in 1999 when she heard a coach speaking. By the end of the programme she was already calling the helpline: she knew it was what she wanted to do for a living.Since then, she has racked up thousands of hours of coaching, founding Firework in 2003, becoming an ICF accredited Master Coach in 2005 and forming many other collaborations including Mirus Coaching for Social Change, Mentor Coaches International and a new project providing pro bono coaching to Extinction Rebellion activists. With 25 years' experience as a business owner, coach and consultant she works with people who are at a life or career crossroads. Her specialism is supporting clients to find meaningful and fulfilling work.In this episode, we talk about:- How, as a working class little girl on a council estate near Glasgow, she first learned about her sense of agency in the world.- How she created the renowned Firework Career Coaching Framework, started Firework Coaching Company and later sold it.- Why she has never got bored of her work with people changing careers.- What she thinks makes a great website for a coach (as one of the first people to have a coaching website) and how to launch it.- How she tried every kind of marketing in existence and what she learned from that experimentation (and what she recommends you do so you don’t have to experiment with everything).Plus, starting from Marianne’s bugbears about the coaching industry, we get into a fascinating conversation about the morals and ethics of coaching, and ask questions like, is the end is near for ‘the client’s agenda’ and ‘where were the coaches when the banks went down’?For more information about Marianne, visit: https://www.coachlifeandcareer.com/ or http://www.mentor-coach.com/For information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people we mentioned (that you might be interested in):~4: James Bianco and the Coach’s Journey episode with James: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-5-james-bianco-beware-your-simple-stories-about-coaching-success~5: Laura Berman Fortgang: https://laurabermanfortgang.com/~10: Coach U: https://www.coachu.com/~30 and ~37: Firework: https://www.fireworkcoaching.com/~38: Kate Edmunds: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/kate-edmonds-5aa25516~39: CTI: https://coactive.com/~40: Careershifters: http://www.careershifters.org/~40: My temping colleague, Amy, and her awesome vintage dress company, Clarence and Alabama: https://www.clarenceandalabama.co.uk/~41: Richard Alderson: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/richardalderson~54: Marianne’s ebook, So You Want To Become A Coach - A Guide to Training and Skills for Life and Business Coaching: http://www.mentor-coach.com/become_a_life_coach.htm~55: The ICF (International Coaching Federation) and their levels of credential, ACC, PCC and MCC: https://www.coachfederation.org.uk/credentialing/credential_path~56: Academy of Coaching Supervision: https://coachingsupervisionacademy.com/~58: ICF International events: https://coachfederation.org/events/icf-converge-2019~82: Sir John Whitmore and his book Coaching For Performance: https://www.performanceconsultants.com/coaching-for-performance-book~82: Association for Coaching: https://www.associationforcoaching.com/~90: Climate Change Coaches: https://www.climatechangecoaches.com/~93: Mirus Coaching for Social Change and Alma Neville~94: Robert Holden: https://www.robertholden.com/~110: Exeter Street Hall, the new community centre where Marianne is a trustee: https://exeterstreethall.org/

S1 Ep 9Episode #9: Barry Ennis - Follow The Fire
EHis determination and attitude took Barry Ennis from runner to leader of senior management teams and multimillion-pound projects in a television career that involved a BAFTA-winning show, seven series of Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire? and… Beyonce! But when, in a moment of struggle, he took himself through a self-coaching exercise, he realised that his work in television didn’t speak to the values and passions that were at his core. He set out to find something different, and knew he had found it when - part way through training as a coach - some transformational work with a fellow student lit a fire in him.Since then, he has followed that fire to the sense of wonder he gets from the right learning, relationships which have enabled his business to thrive, and his new business, The Wake Up Method, providing organisations with a proven way to motivate, inspire, train and retain the next generation of managers and leaders. In this episode, we talk about:What he learnt from building his first business, The Guerilla Experience, (with business partner Teresa Klasener,) from their first event, to working in organisations, to what brought that company to an end.How he created his first corporate coaching offer during a call with a potential client. Why he says he runs a business, rather than works as a coach, and why he finds the term coaching unhelpful at times. The dangers of social media and how he uses it.Plus, Barry talks beautifully about his upbringing and where the stories that have supported his business have come from, including how the distinction between ‘I have a place’ and ‘Know your place’ has made all the difference for him, leaving him in power and not hopelessness. For more information about Barry, visit: www.TheWakeUpMethod.com, @TheWakeUpMethod on instagram or https://www.linkedin.com/company/thewakeupmethodFor information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people we mentioned (that you might be interested in):~16: Barefoot Coaching - https://www.barefootcoaching.co.uk/~16: Kim Morgan - https://www.barefootcoaching.co.uk/about-us/kim-morgan~20: Transactional Analysis - https://www.itaaworld.org/~31: Giles Barrow - https://gilesbarrow.com/~44: Mariana Ipkendanz - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariana-ipkendanz-acc-125a70143/~48: International Coach Federation/ICF - https://www.coachfederation.org.uk/~69: Teresa Klasener - https://www.linkedin.com/in/teresaklasener/~78: BetterUp - http://www.betterup.com~82: The Berne Institute - https://theberne.com/~87: The podcast episode where I spoke to the guest, Joel Monk, about the neuroscience of goal setting was this one: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-6-joel-monk-conversations-at-the-cutting-edge-of-coaching In it, we refer back to this episode of the Coaches Rising Podcast with Richard Boyatzis: https://www.coachesrising.com/podcast/how-to-access-optimum-growth-states-in-coaching/~95: NABS – https://nabs.org.uk/~97: Kate Rees - https://www.katereescoaching.com/~101: Fiverr - https://www.fiverr.com/~103: Barry’s Brag Alert post on Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/posts/barry-ennis-coach_wakeup-coaching-coachofthemonth-activity-6630457599294783488-Rrly~109: Michael Neill - https://www.michaelneill.org/~116: Abraham Maslow - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Maslow~119: Soil, Soul, Society by Satish Kumar~120: Ken Wilber - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Wilber

S1 Ep 8Episode #8: Robbie on... how to structure engagements, conversations with potential clients, marketing for coaches and how his fees have evolved
This is a different kind of podcast episode. Instead of interviewing a guest, in this episode I (Robbie Swale) share the content of four videos I have previously made about coaching, bringing much of my thinking and body of work around coaching together in one place. But it’s not just the videos - I listen back to each one (mostly I had never listened back before!) and pull out particularly important thoughts and ideas, and share the things that have changed or developed in my thinking since the videos were originally recorded. In here is LOADS of insight that I’ve gleaned from many great coaches and teachers, and others who have influenced my work.In particular, I talk about:- Why I work with clients over a period of time not a number of sessions.- How I structure and think about my first conversation with a potential client.- Marketing for coaches: the importance of connecting, sharing yourself and doing great work.- How my fees have evolved over my time as a coach (in pretty granular detail). These are some of the most important things for coaches to think about, and is some of the most condensed thinking I have shared on the subjects. In and between the videos, I touch on loads of the ways I work as a coach, including: comparing the price of ‘per session’ with the price of a period of time; my rule for making networking events manageable; the importance of leadership as a coach; why it’s important to give people the chance to know you before they meet you; and how it’s vital to do the sums when it comes to your coaching business. For information about my wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.To watch the videos in their original form (and various other coaching videos), visit my YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5aalWAQqFp6yTk2jghSpeQMusic by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people I mentioned (that you might be interested in):~5: Sam Chillcott – https://www.samchillcott.com/~8: Joel Monk (http://joel-monk.com/) and the podcast episode where I interviewed him: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-6-joel-monk-conversations-at-the-cutting-edge-of-coaching~27: Phil Bolton (http://www.phil-bolton.com/), The Coaching School (http://www.thecoachingschool.co.uk) and the podcast episode where I interviewed him: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-2-phil-bolton-from-forensic-accountant-to-the-go-to-career-coach-in-london-and-on-to-work-with-ceos-mds-and-founders~27: Rich Litvin and The Prosperous Coach: https://richlitvin.com/the-prosperous-coach/~28: Rich Litvin’s video – How To Coach Someone You Don’t Know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoaM2PwzHRQ~30: Jamie Smart: https://www.jamiesmart.com/~31: Giovanna Capozza: https://giovannacapozza.com/~35: Rich Litvin’s video, The Art of the Proposal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjwzfLIA8w0~43: Rich Litvin’s blog - How I Create a Powerful End to a Coaching Engagement: https://richlitvin.com/powerful-end-coaching-agreement/~63: My sister, Ro, and her website: http://l-r-o.com/~66: My brother, Ewan and his article about healing our allergies to marketing: https://www.ewantownhead.com/how-to-heal-our-allergies-to-marketing/~70: My article, Dancing with Resistance: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/dancing-resistance-lesson-from-my-first-year-coach-robbie-swale/~71: My 12-minute articles, which you can browse here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbieswale/detail/recent-activity/posts/~81: The now-resting Coaching School: http://www.thecoachingschool.co.uk~82: Mike Toller: http://www.michaeltollercoaching.co.uk/~84: The 90 Day Money Game: https://richlitvin.com/the-90-day-money-game/~90: The group coaching call I recorded, where you can watch me working with three coaches at once: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFBvAVfZrKQ

S1 Ep 7Episode #7: Kristen Kosinski - The Power of Being Truly Seen, With All Your Messiness
EKristen Kosinski is a coach, consultant and founder who empowers her clients to achieve the impossible, lead fearlessly, inspire others and manifest their dreams. Midway through a career as a successful executive in Hollywood, Kristen sat down with a woman on the recommendation of a friend. That woman was Mona Miller, the late coach, author and teacher, and over the next 12 years Mona and Kristen worked together as Kristen’s career and relationships were transformed. As part of that work, she founded The Samburu Project, a non-profit organisation which has brought clean drinking water to over 100,000 people in Africa. Then, in 2016, after leaving The Samburu Project, she set off to do the work that she had learned from Mona, training as a coach and developing a business through a commitment to courage and doing her own deep work… among many other things. In this episode, we talk about:- How two hours with Mona Miller - the first time she felt all her messiness had been truly seen, in the most extraordinarily loving way - transformed her.- How Kristen came to believe that we live in a world where you can literally live your dreams, and why so many are afraid to even speak about their dreams, let alone follow them.- How visiting her father after his terminal cancer diagnosis gave her permission to leave behind the dream she had had as a child and strike out on a new path- The writing practice she uses to deal with the pain of getting ‘No’s.Plus, in the final part of the call, Kristen and I get into detail exploring, together, some of the questions about how to structure coaching engagements, what the optimal length is and whether to offer one-off conversations to potential clients. For more information about Kristen, visit her website: https://kristenkosinski.com/For information about Robbie’s wider work and writing, visit www.robbieswalecoaching.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgThings and people we mentioned (that you might be interested in):First things first, mentioned throughout the call, Mona Miller: http://www.monamiller.com/~9: Rich Litvin: https://richlitvin.com/~23: The non-profit organisation Kristen founded, The Samburu Project: https://thesamburuproject.org/~35: Rich Litvin’s not-currently-offered Prosperous Coach Salon~46: iPEC/the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching: https://www.ipeccoaching.co.uk/~46: Coach U: http://www.coachinc.com/CoachU/~50: The Prosperous Coach by Rich Litvin and Steve Chandler: https://richlitvin.com/the-prosperous-coach/~52: Katie Harvey and the episode of The Coach’s Journey Podcast with her as the guest: https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-1-katie-harvey-14000-hours-of-coaching-being-part-of-the-uk-coaching-vanguard-and-being-a-generalist-coach~59: Invisible Warfare by Mona Miller: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Invisible-Warfare-Mona-Miller/dp/0978665201~77: The Artist’s Way and Julia Cameron: https://juliacameronlive.com/the-artists-way/~82: Marianne Williamson: https://marianne.com/~82: A Course in Miracles by Dr Helen Schucman: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0018A01L4~82: An example of Marianne Williamson’s work on A Course in Miracles: https://marianne.com/365-days-of-a-course-in-miracles/
