Covid & Kids Update
The Covid-19 pandemic is still spreading in much of the United States, but how does that impact kids? The Kids Crew visit with New Mexico Department of Health Secretary Kathyleen Kunkel about the virus, learn how children can help us all get control of its creeping spread. Find out what makes a “super spreader” and how schools will be impacted by the deadly disease. Even though there’s much uncertainty about the future, we get some answers from Secretary Kunkel. Plus we hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about what’s going on with plants around the world. We also have a review of a series of kids books that are to help children normalize wearing face masks, Face Mask Fun With Hamilton by Renuka Christoph. Bill of Rights Part 4: 8th, 9th, 10th Amendments

Being a Refugee

Kids & Covid-19
This week on The Children’s Hour, kids take on Covid-19. We talk with Dr. Anthony Fleg from UNM Family Practice and the Native Health Initiative, and he offers his tips for reducing our stress and anxiety. Plus kids from our listening audience and crew share how they’re coping with being out of school, and practicing social distancing. We also hear from a school social worker Ruth Graunke about strategies to stay calm in crisis, and we visit with Alice Lu McCoy, from the New Mexico Developmental Disabilities Planning Council about making an extra effort to connect with kids and adults who are living in residential facilities.

Pollinator Protectors

These students from the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy successfully lobbied the state legislature for a license plate, in order to raise funds to build pollinator friendly medians and roadways. We also find out more about their school, where classes are taught in sign language. And we meet Cecil Williams, a photographer who helped capture Civil Rights History with his lens.

We sent kid reporters knee-deep into a living video game to find out what that’s like, and we meet toy and history maker, Dr. Lisa, who’s creating multicultural dolls to represent kids of all shapes and colors. Anthropology
What is Anthropology, and how does understanding human evolutionary history help us understand people today? The Children’s Hour celebrates a year on the road exploring what makes us human at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico. We learn about human evolutionary history, and how we're related to our ancient ape ancestors.
Kids & Screens
How much screen time is too much for kids? This week on The Children's Hour we explore digital devices, addiction, and kids. Our crew discuss their own use of screens, and what they think about how they use their devices. Dr. Kristina Sowar visits our studio to answer our questions about the mental health impacts of screen time on kids. We also hear from technology pioneer Dom Sagolla who has advice for kids about self control and screens.

Then, second graders in Ms. Antillon's classroom in downtown Albuquerque's Coronado Elementary School teach us about the legendary Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo.

This week on The Children's Hour, join us for a live broadcast from the Museum of the American Military Family in Tijeras, New Mexico. How does having a parent serving in the armed forces impact a family? This museum is set up to look like a military family's home during World War 2 and is filled with memorabilia and more. This week on The Children’s Hour, in a galaxy far, far away, we can tell there’s a black hole at its center. We know this because of the Very Large Array, a huge radio telescope in central New Mexico that is the most precise radio telescope in the world.

Live From The Dinosaur Museum
In a live broadcast from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque, we learned about paleontology from the museum curators of paleontology, and the museum educators.

Summer Birds
Learn about the summer birds of the Rio Grande Valley with our young naturalist friend, Adya Radcliffe and Laurel Ladwig, a graduate student in the UNM Dept. of Geography & Environmental Studies. Then, hear from 4th graders who spent a year birding at the Valle Del Oro, and wrote poetry about their favorite birds.

Going To The Zoo
This week The Children’s Hour went to the zoo in a broadcast from the Albuquerque Zoo's Africa stage between the hyenas and chimps, with Mammal Curator, Dr. Erin Flynn, and zookeeper Alegria Lacy and one of the McCaw parrot's she helps train, Salsa. With live music by the band Zoolojams, learn about how zoos are helping to save critically endangered species, and find out what a zookeeper’s job is like.

Chamber Music And Molly of Denali
