Behind the Lens of Cheer Action Shots, with Jen Walker

Cheer action shots capture both the perfect, awe-inspiring moments and the hilariously awkward mid-tumble expressions. Kristen talks with cheer photographer Jen Walker about the challenges of shooting high-stakes competitions and the magic of a well-timed photo.

Show Notes

Cheer action shots: sometimes you get the perfect jump, or that key moment when the flyer hits their body position, or even the coaches who look like they’re about to pop a vein because they’re screaming so much encouragement to their athletes… and then, more often than not, you get  the accidental, mid-tumble, eyes-half-closed, mouth-wide-open action shots of our kids. You know the ones.

Because for every perfectly timed, awe-inspiring shot, there’s at least one that makes your kid look like they just got hit by a strong gust of wind.

Kristen sits down with Jen Walker, a cheer photographer who somehow manages to make high-stakes competitions look effortless through her lens (spoiler: it’s not effortless).

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to be on the other side of the camera in the cheer world—or if you just want to hear two people nerd out over the power of a great cheer action photo—this one’s for you.
