"Defining Identity" The Decentralized Self (1/5) Ingo Rube, Founder KILT Protocol The term “identity” is thrown around quite often in both the web 2 and Web3 spaces. But what IS identity? What defines centralized identity vs. decentralized? Charlie Shrem and KILT Protocol dive into the nuances of identity and the unknown risks the mass population is currently facing. Identifier + credentials = identityIn the physical world, your identity starts with your face or fingerprint. These are identifiers that are given to you at birth. Later, credentials are given to you by universities and governments (diploma, driver’s license, passport). Your identity grows by adding more and more credentials to your identifier.For thousands of years, this model worked perfectly. You were in control of your credentials, with your license in your pocket and your passport in the drawer. This model was highly scalable, privacy preserving, relatively secure, and cost effective.Then digital monopolies turned this model upside down.They took control of our identities, storing our information in corporate databases and building their business on top of our personal information. Now we need to prove our identity for nearly every service on the internet, from getting access to apps to paying bills, but we’re no longer in control of our own data. Today’s guest is Nick Johnson, the founder and lead developer of ENS. Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed, open, and extensible naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain. ENS converts human-readable Ethereum addresses like john.eth into the machine-readable alphanumeric codes you know from wallets like Metamask. The reverse conversion -- associating metadata and machine-readable addresses with human-readable Ethereum addresses -- is also possible. Nick previously worked as a software engineer at Ethereum from June 2016 to August 2018, where they implemented a trending system to identify trending terms on Lumi, improved integration with Twitter, and made significant improvements to the efficiency, scalability, and monitoring of backend systems. Prior to Ethereum, Nick worked as a senior software engineer at Google from June 2014 to June 2016. At Google, they were a primary point of contact for external developers with questions and problems using Google App Engine, and they wrote client libraries and SDK code to improve the user experience with App Engine. Nick also wrote extensive technical blog posts to help users with specific App Engine technologies, and they gave talks at high profile technical conferences around the world on subjects related to App Engine development.
