They had a relationship with God. Which then inspired them to ‘set the world on fire’ as Catherine of Sienna put it. But, more specifically, it meant they put in the time. They sat with the Lord. Spoke with Him. Listened to Him. Daily. They unveiled their hearts and wounds and problems to Him. They offered him thanks and gratitude. They left their sufferings with Him on the altar. They begged for His help. My question to you: are you putting in the time? I’m not talking about time to just talk at Him or sit in church making a mental grocery list. I’m talking about time to build a consistent, honest relationship. Time to speak, and time to listen. Whether you want to pray a daily holy hour or hit up adoration once a week, I have a guide here from the makers of Exodus 90 specifically about praying a Holy Hour. This most quintessentially Irish style of whiskey, pot still, is first matured in ex-bourbon casks, then in Irish Oak felled in the mountains around the distillery. While the bourbon cask softens and sweetens the whiskey, the higher levels of flavor in Irish oak complement and balance the classic pot still spices. March 2nd is Ash Wednesday, and over a billion people will start living different in some way. Maybe giving up chocolate or alcohol, or whatever. For a lot of Catholics, Lent is a time of finding the easiest way to “give something up”. But, at the end of those 40 days, did that sacrifice really make a difference? This year, there’s a new opportunity out there specifically for men that will actually help you grow closer to God and become a better man. You’ve heard me talk about Exodus 90 — but let me tell you about Exodus Lent: a 40-day journey that will challenge you to dig a little deeper this year. If your first reaction is: “I’m absolutely not taking cold showers” well you’re in luck: men who take on the Exodus Lent get to take warm showers, drink alcohol, and — when you’re with others — watch TV and sports. But don’t be fooled, this will still be a challenging 40 days of preparation for living the Christian life, for the rest of your life. Here’s how it works: First — Over the 40 days of Lent, men commit to daily prayer, setting aside a minimum of 20 minutes to spend with the Lord. Each day includes a scripture reading and reflection written to help men better understand, grow in, and live virtue. Second — More than just giving up chocolate, men take up a range of disciplines and sacrifices for the season of Lent. Sweets, snacks, social media, are all gone. Third — Men commit to a fraternity of 5-7 men. Each week, the fraternity meets to pray together, check in, hold each other accountable and encourage one another. On Easter Sunday, you’ll walk away with a new and lasting understanding of what it means to live the full Christian life. Chocolate bunnies and all. About the Topic: “And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father whose in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18 Jesus says “when you fast” not “if you fast”. He expected us to fast. But we should not fast out of dieting or pride, but out of love of God. Fasting improves us spiritually in several ways (from Jimmy Akin): We express our recognition that spiritual things are more important than physical things. We learn to deny ourselves pleasures, even in spite of pain. (Increase in fortitude) We declare that we recognize the need to reform and to get closer to God. We willingly embrace the hunger fasting produces as a sign of being willing to shoulder the burdens of others (Col. 1:24 - “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is Lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the Church…”). What is lacking: Christ’s sufferings were, of course, sufficient for our redemption, but all of us may add ours to his, in order that the fruits of his redemption be applied to the souls of men. We express humility before God by adopting a humble posture, recognizing our dependence on him and affirming our submissiveness to his will. 4 classes of penitents who committed major sins (idolatry, murder, abortion, adultery) in the ancient formal penitential discipline: Weepers - Not allowed in the church but stayed outside and asked those going in to pray for them. Hearers - Stood inside the church doors and heard the liturgy of the word but were dismissed before the liturgy of the Eucharist. Kneelers - knelt or lay down in church and participated with the Church in specific prayers for them before being blessed by the bishop and dismissed prior to the Eucharist. Standers - sat in the congregation and stayed for the liturgy of the Eucharist but did not receive Communion. 5 Tips when Fasting: Have a specific intention for your suffering. Visualize the person you are praying for or the grace you are asking God to give you. Set a schedule. Scheduling how your day will look helps avoid moments of inactivity. Helps to go to sleep on time and get up early. Increase the amount of water you drink per day. Take multi-vitamins. When you fast you will become deficient in some vitamins your body is used to having. Don’t complain. No one should know you are fasting. Canon Law on Feast Days: Can. 1246 §1. Sunday, on which by apostolic tradition the paschal mystery is celebrated, must be observed in the universal Church as the primordial holy day of obligation. The following days must also be observed: the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension, the Body and Blood of Christ, Holy Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, and All Saints. Canon Law on Days of Penance: Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wed

Dewar’s Double Double 27-Year-Old is finished in Palo Cortado sherry casks, this blend delivers heady, aromatic, floral notes with honeyed fruits and subtle spice and the characteristic silky smooth finish. Innovation comes in many forms, and in 2019 our Master Blender, Stephanie Macleod, released a new range of Blended Scotch Whiskies with a Four Stage Ageing Process for Ultimate Smoothness. This may sound like an indulgence but the series has been picking up gold medal awards the world over since being released. We believe that in order to do things right and get the best results you should put in double the effort; everything else is just a job half done. So we asked ourselves how we could put in double the effort to our range that was already Double Aged for Extra Smoothness…and it was obvious..double it! Our Double Double Series has been aged, blended together, aged again, then finished in sherry casks for the Ultimate Smoothness. About our gear: The Thomist Subscription The Thomist appeals to a wide international readership in the university, the seminary, and the Church. In the tradition and spirit of Thomas Aquinas, it seeks to promote original and penetrating inquiry into the full range of contemporary philosophical and theological questions. It undertakes particularly to support sustained discussion of issues of philosophy and systematic theology, where such discussion can be advanced by creative use of the thought of Aquinas and significant authors in the Thomistic tradition. In this way The Thomist seeks to cultivate a fruitful dialogue between modern and contemporary philosophical systems and the classical tradition of philosophy and Christian theology. About the Topic: Acquired: Virtue that we cultivate by our own efforts. Acquired virtues can be strengthened progressively over time. Aquinas holds that acquired virtue can be a life of continuous growth and progress. Infused: Given by God alone. Habitual grace is the accidental form that modifies the essence of the soul so as to give the human person a participation in the divine nature. Infused virtues can also grow over time. Stages of growth: Beginner – avoiding sin and preserving the gift of charity. Proficient – Strengthen charity by steadily advancing in greater works Perfect – Whose exercise of charity is directed at uion with and enjoyment of God The strengthening of a habit enables one to perform greater acts in accordance with that virtue the 1. Promptness 2. Pleasure 3. Ease. Acquired virtues are both generated and increased by gradual strengthening of reason’s imprint on the appetitive powers through human acts, but “our acts are not the active causes of the increase of charity and the other infused virtues,” just as our actions are not the active causes of infused virtues’ coming to be in the first place. The increase of the infused virtues is due to God’s action, just as their initial infusion is God’s gift. Everything as gift. Francis De Sales – Intro to the Devout Life: Of poverty of spirit in the midst of riches. “There is a difference between having poison and being poisoned” Steps to growing in gratitude – Catholic Digest Prayer, prayer, prayer Surround yourself with people who are grateful for life Attitudes are contagious Materialism fuels our ingratitude Before we make purchases (planned or otherwise) say a prayer Instead of rewarding children with things, reward them with experiences Will this gift end up in the trash in a week? Refusing to forgive is a major obstacle to gratitude Failure to forgive places burdens on our soul Worry and Anxiety also lead us away from gratitude “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6-7 There is a direct link between screen time and anxiety Practice custody of our language Just like custody of the eyes. Click here About our drink: Annapolis Hard Cider Annapolis Hard Cider sent us several different ciders to try. They were all delicious and worth having. A great compliment to your holiday dinners. Check them out! Thank you, Annapolis Cider, for sending us some of your delicious ciders About our gear: Top Marian books for Adam: True Devotion to Mary Hail, Holy Queen Echo of God 33 days to Morning Glory Champions of the Rosary Behold your Mother About the Topic: A true devotion is defined as a "promptness of the will in the service of God" - Aquinas Errors of a True Devotion: 1. In wishing to go to our Lord without passing through Mary. Some Catholics do not see clearly enough how expedient it is to have recourse to the Blessed Virgin in order to enter the intimacy of Christ. 2. They fear that devotion toward her is abused and that injury is done to our Lord by paying excessive honor to BVM. 3. Seems to consider Mary a hindrance in reaching divine union, whereas all her influence is exercised in order to lead us to it. "To neglect the mediators whom God has given us because of our weakness, shows a lack of humility. Intimacy with our Lord in prayer will be greatly facilitated by frequent recourse to Mary." EX: Asking Mary to help make a good examination of conscience and confession. "There are Catholics who do not see clearly enough the necessity of having recourse to Mary that they may attain to intimacy with the Savior” - Fr. RGL Degrees of the Devotion: 1. Consists in praying to the BVM from time to time, honoring her as the Mother of God, saying, for example, the Angelus with true recollection every time it rings. 2. Having more perfect sentiments of vereration, confidence, and love for Mary. Lead us to the daily recitation of at least one of the three parts of the Rosary while we meditate on the joyful, sorrowful, or glorious mysteries, which are for us the road of eternal life. Page 27 in Secrets of the Rosary on why the rosary is more efficacious than reading the psalms. 3. True devotion to Mary, that proper to proficients, consists in consecrating oneself entirely to our Lord through her. "This devotion consists in giving oneself entirely to the BVM in order to belong entirely to Jesus Christ through her." CCC 964: Mary's role in the Church is inseparable from her union with Christ and flows directly from it. "This union of the mother with the Son in the work of salvation is made manifest from the time of Christ's virginal conception up to his death";504 it is made manifest above all at the hour of his Passion Fruits of the Devotion: St. Louis de Montfort says that this road to God is easier, and nevertheless more meritorious, and consequently a more perfect, short, and sure road. “But thanks to Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort,” he wrote in 2004 in the Letter to the Religious of the Montfortian Families, “I understood that authentic devotion to the Mother of God is truly Christocentric (…). Reading True Devotion marked a turning point in my life. I say a ‘turning point’ although it is a long inner journey that coincided with my clandestine preparation for the priesthood. I realized (…) something fundamental. It happened that the devotion of my childhood and even my adolescence to the Mother of Christ gave way to a new attitude, a devotion coming from the depths of my faith, as from the very heart of the Trinitarian and Christological reality.” -JP2 1 Cor. 4:16, “I urge you, then, be imitators of me.” The saints show us how to imitate Christ. "Everyone should have a genuine devotion to Mary and entrust his life to her motherly care." Orchard fruits and rich cask-derived creaminess balance the multi-layered smoke. It is a new peaty landscape, as the Painting Label shows. About our gear: The Secret of Sanctity - OUR GREAT HAPPINESS as Christians is to possess, in this world, through grace and love, Him Who deigns to be our beatitude for all eternity; and our greatest misfortune, after sin, is not to know or to recognize this secret of eternal charity. God would have us holy even as He is holy; He would have us live His very life. It is for this end that He has given us His divine Son, and with Him the infinite riches of His heart; that is. His merits. His sacraments, His Church. Sanctity consists in believing and receiving these divine communications, of which Jesus Christ is the source, the instrument, and the end; consequently, it also consists in uniting ourselves with Him by loving Him, and in modelling ourselves upon Him by imitating Him; it can and ought to pervade every life, the busiest as well as the simplest. Click here About our drink: N/A About our gear: Before Church and State: A Study of Social Order in the Sacramental Kingdom of St. Louis IX Before Church and State: A Study of Social Order in the Sacramental Kingdom of St. Louis IX by Andrew Willard Jones explores in great detail the "problem of Church and State" in thirteenth-century France. It argues that while the spiritual and temporal powers existed, they were not parallel structures attempting to govern the same social space in a contest over sovereignty. Rather, the spiritual and the temporal powers were wrapped up together in a differentiated and sacramental world, and both included the other as aspects of their very identity. The realm was governed not by proto-absolutist institutions, but rather by networks of friends that cut across lay/clerical lines. Ultimately, the king's "fullness of power" and the papacy's "fullness of power" came together to govern a single social order. The prevailing narrative of human history, given to us as children and reinforced constantly through our culture, is the plot of progress. As the narrative goes, we progressed from tyranny to freedom, from superstition to science, from poverty to wealth, from darkness to enlightenment. This is modernity's origin myth. Out of it, a consensus has emerged: part of human progress is the overcoming of religion, in particular Christianity, and that the world itself is fundamentally secular. The Two Cities: A History of Christian Politics In The Two Cities: A History of Christian Politics, Andrew Willard Jones rewrites the political history of the West with a new plot, a plot in which Christianity is true, in which human history is Church history. The Two Cities moves through the rise and fall of empires; cycles of corruption and reform; the rise and fall of Christendom; the emergence of new political forms, such as the modern state, and new political ideologies, such as liberalism and socialism; through the horrible destruction of modern warfare; and on to the plight of contemporary Christians. These movements of history are all considered in light of their orientation toward or away from God. The Two Cities advances a theory of Christian politics that is both an explanation of secular politics and a proposal for Christians seeking to navigate today's most urgent political questions. About Deacon Harrison Garlick: Dcn. Harrison Garlick is a deacon, husband, and father who serves as the chancellor and legal counsel for the Diocese of Tulsa & Eastern Oklahoma. He also serves as a tutor for the Alcuin Institute for Catholic Culture teaching in its Great Books program. Read his journey in the diaconate. You can follow Dcn. Garlick on Twitter here. About Andrew Willard Jones: Andrew Willard Jones holds a PhD in Medieval History from Saint Louis University with a focus on the Church of the High Middle Ages. Jones’s work is primarily concerned with historical political theology and with the reconciliation of the post-modern with the pre-modern. Methodologically, his work treats history as a theological discipline and not as a secular archaeology. Jones has two books forthcoming: Before Church and State: A Study of Social Order in St. Louis IX’s Sacramental Kingdom and The Liturgical Cosmos: Explorations in the Sacramental and Biblical Vision of Pope Innocent III. He is also working on a one volume history of the Catholic Church. CONGRATULATIONS TO The Catholic Woodworker FOR OPENING UP A NEW OFFICE BUILDING! Fr. Nesbit from Clear Creek Abbey on Mortification
Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey, having devoted itself from the outset wholly to the service of God in the hidden life, is to be counted among the institutes entirely ordered towards contemplation. By virtue of their vocation, the monks devote themselves to God alone in silence and in solitude, in constant prayer, and willing penance. Due to this, it is a rare opportunity to be able to have a conversation with a monk on the show.

Eucharist, Adoration, and the Hobbit
No real topic. Just a casual conversation. Plus, Adam thought the Hobbit was just "okay". We sip on Wyoming Whiskey Double Cask, talk about what to avoid when buying sawhorses, and then shoot from the hip. You may not like this episode....
