From the publisher
Fans of The Walking Dead know it's so much more than a zombie show. It's an emotionally rich, character-driven series about love and loss, and found family, and the lengths we'd go through to protect the people we care about. That's what's kept us coming back all these years. (And also we like zombies.) I’m Jason Cabassi. My cohost Karen and I started podcasting about The Walking Dead back in 2010. Along the way, I’ve appeared on the show a couple of times as a walker, hosted hundreds of Q&A panels with TWD actors at conventions across the U.S., and eventually teamed up with my current co-host, the witty and insightful Lucy Hinnie. Together—with some incredible guests—we’ve covered The Last of Us and every Walking Dead spinoff, from Fear to Dead City. Right now, we’re enjoying a rewatch of the original series—with the full story in mind—and diving into the moments that still hit hard. Past guests on the podcast include Andrew Lincoln (Rick), Danai Gurira (Michonne), Norman Reedus (Daryl), Steven Yeun (Glenn), Lauren Cohan (Maggie), Robert Kirkman, Angela Kang, Greg Nicotero, and many more. And the most fun and fulfilling part of all this has absolutely been interacting with you guys and making it a conversation. So write in, send a voice message, and be part of it! EThis ep is one of the lower-rated ones this season, but my wonderful guest Rebecca and I found a lot to talk about. Two particularly crucial things about this ep, IMO, are: 1: It’s when the Alexandrians finally come to terms with the world as it is in the ZA, and 2. There’s a really cool sewer zombie! Oh yeah, and Maggie reveals she’s pregnant too :) Enjoy! EIt’s the cheesemaker! Some of you guys love this episode and some hate it — a polarizing one for sure. Even though I see it differently now, I still love and appreciate it so much. Top-tier TWD for me. But I think my take is more nuanced than last time, and it was a blast to have Alex Kruger (who co-hosted our TWD: Dead City coverage with Ben) with me to thoroughly talk it through. 694: "JSS" (TWD S6E2 Rewatch)
EHoly cow what an aggressively brutal episode, and also an artfully crafted one, with the juxtaposition between the mundanely suburban confines of Alexandria and the explosively violent attack from those big bad Wolves! 693: "First Time Again" (TWD S6E1 Rewatch)
ECrazy episode that definitely takes at least two viewings to really get it (all the black and white scenes are earlier, and color later). Coming right on the heals of the season five finale, this episode felt like a continuation of that season, which made me like it even more than I did the first time around. First Time Again :P As mentioned on the podcast, Lucy has a busy schedule for the next couple of months, but we don’t want to leave you guys hanging, so I (Jason) will be continuing on with the rewatch with guest hosts — happy to welcome longtime listener and “What Is From?” podcaster Alex with me for this one — and Lucy will be back for the big 700 (if not before). 692: Coldwater (2025)
EAndrew Lincoln starred in a TV series, and so of course we’re gonna talk about it! Thing is, he plays kind of a berk (that’s British for chode). Coldwater (available on Paramount+ in the U.S.) is a lot of fun though — it’s funny, thought-provoking, and it’s a good old-fashioned thriller to sink your teeth into. I wouldn’t necessarily give it my highest recommendation, but honestly, that fact that Lucy and I had so much fun talking about it made me like it even more. You gotta be ready to see Andrew Lincoln playing a berk though…. Bonus: Jason & Karen on Severance
EHey all, here’s a bonus episode for ya. If you’re a fan of the Apple TV series Severance — or if you’ve missing hearing me (Jason) and Karen together — I’m pretty sure you’ll like it. Karen in particular is in top form here :) So what is this? This is the two of us on my other podcast, Wax Episodic, talking Severance S1E1 “Good News About Hell”. What is Severance? It’s a trippy show where for some reason office workers have had their brains bifurcated so that while at work, they retain only work memories, and only outside memories on the outside. It’s a mysterious, mind-bending, amusingly strange, beautifully shot, intelligent thriller about identity, memory, and corporate control, and it’s on Apple TV, and Karen and I will be covering the entire series on Wax Episodic. If you like this episode: Please head on over and subscribe to Wax Episodic, which you can find at waxepisodic.com. Or just search “Wax Episodic” wherever you get your podcasts. 691: "Conquer" (TWD S5E16 Rewatch)
EThat’s a wrap for season 5! Because of the Daryl show and a few other detours, it took us six months, which was just as long as when we covered it the first time. Lol. Anyway, the season ends with this packed episode that’s a turning point for Alexandria and Rick and the fam, and we were thrilled to have listener Carisa from Portland to talk It out with us. Be sure to listen to the end for some book recommendations.
