Ep 409TCF Ep. 409 - Jeffery Saddoris
Jeffery Saddoris is endlessly curious – about people, about creativity, about line and shape and color – and his personal and professional pursuits are driven by learning, discovering, imagining, listening, celebrating, and making. Years of practicing and teaching photography led Jeffery to realize that few people were talking about the why of creativity – the motivations and inspirations that fuel the work of photographers and other visual artists. He began the website Faded & Blurred as a way to showcase photographers' creative inspiration through editorials, in-depth Spotlights, and a podcast series of one-on-one interviews. One of Jeffery's interviews was with New York-based portrait photographer Bill Wadman, who later invited Jeffery to become the co-host for his new weekly podcast On Taking Pictures. Jeffery often refers to himself as a "serial conversationalist" and podcasting has become an increasingly important platform for his lifelong interest in learning, exploring, communicating, and sharing about art and artists – between more than 5 years talking about photography on On Taking Pictures, hosting the 12-episode Craft & Vision Podcast, and Process Driven, his ongoing podcast of long-form conversations about creativity and how the creative process manifests itself across a wide range of genres and disciplines. Ep 394TCF Ep. 394 - Ada Trillo
Ada Trillo is a Philadelphia-based artist who was born and raised on the Mexican/American border. She had long wanted to do a body of work which focused on the social problems in Mexico to raise awareness and try to make a difference. Several years ago, she was afforded the opportunity to capture a series of photographs centering on the lives of prostitutes in her hometown of Juarez, Mexico. This series was meant to depict and problematize the adversity these women must overcome in their daily lives. She discovered that the majority of the girls in the brothels are not from Juarez but from different parts of the country who had arrived in Juarez with the hopes of emigrating to the US. Many of them arrived with their families and were left behind. Others had been abducted. Ada wants to emphasize that she likes these women, and wants others to understand their circumstances. They have no healthcare and no access to rehabilitation. If they cannot attract clients, they go without food. Ada is carrying out this project because she wants to document an ugly reality that must be exposed. She also hopes to raise funds for the nuns to help more girls and to collaborate with the Coalition Against Trafficking Women, an international organization dedicated to protecting human rights. This series and experience has greatly humbled her and I hope that it will have an impact, moving viewers to want to make a difference as well. A few years ago Jim Harmer was a law student in Florida, and a passionate photographer on the side. He started his blog, Improve Photography, while pretending to listen to his law school professors, and it changed his life. Before long, millions of photographers from around the world were visiting his blog and he became a full-time photographer. Although he did finish law school and passed the bar to be an attorney, he dedicated all his time to photography and his blog. Now, over a million photographers follow him on social media, he travels the world multiple times per year teaching completely free (yep, really) workshops for readers of Improve Photography, and he has been ranked in the top 20 photographers in the United States. Ep 391TCF Ep. 391 - Valerie Jardin & Josh Coombes
Josh Coombes is a UK-based hairdresser and when he started to reach out to the homeless in his city and offer them free haircuts, he started the hashtag #dosomethingfornothing. It wasn't long before he decided to take this idea to more than just his native city. The idea is that as the hashtag and online presence grow, others will be inspired to 'do something for nothing'. Whether that may be to people sleeping rough or basically anyone in need of some love. He recently collaborated with US-based street photographer and educator Valerie Jardin. They took to the streets of New York City to offer haircuts, compassion and interaction with a community often disregarded in our culture. Ep 390TCF Ep. 390 - Alastair McLachlan
Born in the rural town of Hammanskraal, South Africa in 1974 and having grown up on several farms since then, Alastair McLachlan's early work was particularly influenced by his "sense of place", by the land itself and the primary elements of fire, earth, water and air. Living on a farm in Zwartkops, on the Hennops river made him increasingly aware and alarmed by what seemed a ruthless and ill conceived invasion by industry and development – large tracks of land and vegetation seemed to disappear overnight – it was the scale, rate and sheer disregard for beauty, as evidenced by the proliferation of uniform cinder block houses and corrugated factories that scared him. What resulted was a series of "underground adventure installations" – rescued tree roots hung from ceilings in darkened spaces, reminiscent of fairground horror houses, designed to be investigated by torchlight. In 1996 he began documenting Drive-ins around the country – an intriguing counterpoint to human endeavour but with the same vestige remnants of neglect. In 2000 he exhibited a series of "Fireworks!" – cathartic, mixed media works dealing with a sense of loss and cultural memory cycles at the Generator Art Space in Newtown. He was subsequently invited to participate in the "Tour guides of the inner city" art intervention program under the auspices of the "Urban Futures 2000" conferences. By the light of a projector strapped to the top of a pink bus, and showing homegrown video art on neglected spaces and building within the city, he found new inspiration. Given the chance to live in Johannesburg, he decided to investigate the heart of the matter, so to speak, and made the 19th floor of the Lister Medical Building his home. From this vantage point and over more than 12 years he witnessed and tried to understand and make sense of Johannesburg. Ep 389TCF Ep. 389 - Anton Bosman
Anton Bosman is a South African photographer based in Johannesburg who specializes in both natural and urban landscapes. However, it is images of Downtown Johannesburg that demonstrate his passion for the city. Through his photographs he reveals the urban center's beauty and history, while countering the often negative perception of the district. Ep 388TCF Ep. 388 - Fadi BouKaram
Fadi BouKaram was born and raised in Beirut and never wanted to be a photographer. Growing up in a war-torn country, photos often were -- and still are -- the only remnant of the many people who don't exist anymore. These people unwittingly became mythical, for each photo of them hid fantastical stories that only the adults lived and told; it was magic. But magic wears off with age, and a strictly scientific education, graduate degrees in Engineering and Business, and a corporate career wiped out most of what was left of it. It wasn't until he hit my thirties that he realized how much he needed photography; both as a therapy tool and as a way to discover oddities within the mundane. In 2013 a group of photographers from around the world, including Fadi, started the Observe Collective. It was borne out of a 'common fascination with watching and documenting the diverse humanity that surrounds us.' Aside from this shared interest, he can't but be extremely grateful to these now-14 talented individuals, for their support, friendship, and for shaping my photographic education. Catherine's work has been published on the cover of National Geographic Magazine, inside Oprah.com and PDN.com as well as galleries internationally including her most recent collaborative show in Paris, France. Catherine believes that photography can be used to gather up evidence of what's living in-between the words and to document the unseen but deeply felt spaces and places within the internal and external landscape. In 2016-2017 her personal projects, workshops and photo sessions took her to Paris, Cannes and Antibes, France, Marrakech, Morocco, Rome and Montecastello, Italy, Vancouver, B.C, Canada, Mexico City, Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido and Teotihuacan, Mexico, NYC, Boston, Seattle, Sedona and San Diego, USA with plans to head to Barcelona and Mallorca, Spain, New Orleans, Santa Fe, Albequerque and other US and International destinations. She teaches workshops and courses both online and in person as well as creating images for highly visible creatives for their new albums, websites, books and creative projects. Her most prized creation is her son Max Harrison who happens to have Down syndrome and teaches her the most valuable tool to creativity is love. They are working on a collaborative photography project, film and book that will be shown around the world as a way to educate and advocate that Max, and people like him are valuable and unique individuals and not just a diagnosis. Catherine is currently putting together Pop-Up Art show events in Los Angeles, Barcelona and Paris. Her fine art is sold online in limited editions. Ep 384TCF Ep. 384 - Anya Anti
An internationally published and award winning photo artist from Ukraine now based in New York, Anya Anti has been into photography since 2009. She's always been a creative person – as a child she was good at painting and crafts. As her passion for art grew she fell in love with photography and started shooting the world around her. As a self-taught photographer, she gained all her knowledge and inspiration through social media and online photography communities. A year-and-a-half later, she started creating fine art surrealistic female portraits, which became her preferred genre and a hallmark of her work. Installations, costumes and Photoshop manipulation help her to embody her fantasies into a finished piece of art. She shoots mostly with old vintage manual lenses like Helios and Petzval. Their imperfections help her be more creative and achieve that dreamy effect. As a workshop instructor, she has already taught in different countries. She has showcased her work at exhibitions and been published all around the globe. In 2015 she was the lucky winner of a Broncolor GenNEXT sponsorship. Anya is a dreamer. Photography is not only what she loves and what she does, it's also a gentle and romantic side of her. It's a reflection of her deep emotions, passion for unknown and craving for beauty. Ep 382TCF Ep. 382 - Laura Pannack
Laura Pannack's art focuses on social documentary and portraiture, and seeks to explore the complex relationship between subject and photographer. She is driven by research led, self-initiated projects that push her both as an artist and as an individual. She needs to question what she doesn't understands and gain access to worlds closed off to her. She is drawn to adventure, and wants to roam and play with the limitations and dynamics of photography as an art and as an act. She largely shoots on analogue film allowing the process to be organic rather than being predefined by fixed ideas, thus removing additional pressure on the sitter. She tries to understand the lives of those she captures, and to present them creatively. She's a firm believer that time, trust and understanding is the key to portraying subjects truthfully, as such, many of her projects develop over several years. This particular approach allows a genuine connection to exist between sitter and photographer, which in turn elucidates the intimacy of these very human exchanges. Her images aim to suggest the shared ideas and experiences that are entwined in each frame that she shoots. Her work aims to tell and inspire stories and she wants to connect and emotionally engage with viewers. Ep 371TCF Ep. 371 - Omar Z. Robles
Omar Z Robles is an Official Fujifilm X-Photographer based in NYC. His interest in storytelling began with one man: Marcel Marceau. The legendary mime actor taught him how to interpret the world through subtle but riveting movements. Those movements that he acquired as a student in Paris, he employs today in his photo series of ballet dancers. But before juxtaposing the clean lines of dancers against rugged city landscapes, Robles was shooting celebrities, athletes, artists, politicians and city dwellers for The Chicago Tribune's Hoy, Metro San Juan, Latino Leaders and for his own street photography portfolio. In New York City, he transformed the aesthetic of his street photography by substituting the New Yorker with the New York dancer. Robles directed the dancers to tell stories with their bodies as he had learned from Marceau. The results were an army of miniature stories as told by the gentle flow of the dancers' bodies. These stories were later passed on by local and international media. (Mashable, Instagram's Blog, The Phoblographer, The Huffington Post, The Daily Mail, Design Taxi and Harpers Bazaar). He is grateful to the dance community and to his supporters – 220,000 Instagram followers and counting. His social media acumen has made him an influencer for Fujifilm, Gap, Esprit, The Guatemala Tourism Board, Esquire Magazine and other fantastic brands. When he's not spelunking the city, he's at home with his wife, enjoying a steaming espresso cup – and editing his photos. Resources: Omar Z.
