Last week, in broad daylight, on New York City's busy F train, a white man choked a Black man death in front of the entire train. It was one of the ugliest, most despicable acts of violence that I've ever seen. For over 4 minutes, Daniel Penny choked the literal life out of Jordan Neely. Until he died right there on the train. On some days I hate this place that we almost jokingly call "The United" States of America. United in what? Its determination to not make right its wrongs? From 1955 until 2023 this nation had endless chances to try to provide a semblance of justice and accountability to the family of Emmett Till, but for 68 straight years, every DA, every prosecutor, every Attorney General, every staff of the DOJ, and every presidential administration that had a chance to do right by this family, REFUSED TO DO SO. My best guess is that in the years ahead, now that no single living human being that participated in the lynching of Emmett Till is around to be held accountable, the government will eventually tell us what it should have done and offer an empty apology. Yesterday, just days after they ousted and removed Tennessee State Representative Justin Jones from office, the City of Nashville voted to return him RIGHT BACK. And it was a GLORIOUS sight to behold. When he was just a 15 year old boy, police shot and killed his best friend, but prosecutors then went and charged LaKeith, who they openly admit was unarmed and non-violent, with his murder. It's an abomination. I already hate the felony murder rule, but I have NEVER seen it applied in this outrageous fashion. LaKeith was then sentenced to nearly 70 years in prison after police shot and killed his friend. And I have promised his dear mother, Tina, that we would raise enough money for her to take off of work for the next year so that she can fight full time to get her son free. Should Trump be the focus of the news 24/7? Of course not. But I understand why having the former president placed under arrest would dominate the news today. The problem is two-fold, though. It's going to dominate the news for weeks and months to come, even when it shouldn't, because it's clearly good for their ratings. And when Trump becomes the primary focus of the news, VERY VERY important stories end up not being told. Like what's happening in the Tennessee legislature as we speak. It's one of the closest things to fascism we've ever seen. At least 3 duly elected Democratic State Representatives are about to literally be removed from their positions because they participated in a peaceful protest about gun control. First their key cards were disabled and now legislation has been drafted to remove them from the legislature...permanently. I hate to say this, but racism is so deeply ingrained into every fiber of this nation's being that it seems like no matter how hard some of us try, we just can't escape it. And sure enough, it reared its ugly head last night during the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. Today I'll break it all down, but if you hadn't heard, the basics are this: A star white player for Iowa has talked MAJOR trash all year and been celebrated for it - no matter how brash, crass, or over the top it was. But when a rival player from LSU talked that same brash trash right back to her, white folk simply lost their minds. The double standard was brutal. And it was just a painful reminder that even when we are seeking a form of escapism through sports, that bigotry is just lurking right their beneath the surface. Let me unpack and explain it. While it's HUGE news around the world, it's hardly gotten any coverage here in the United States. Right on the border with the US, where the United States is refusing to allow immigrants in, a new crisis is forming in Mexico. Thousands of immigrants that expect to be seen and processed in the United States are piling up in Mexico, which is not remotely prepared to house them. So, in a makeshift jail on the American border, nearly 40 immigrants, including, men, women, and children were all burned to death in a completely preventable fire. It's a human rights catastrophe.
