Ep 40Ep. 40: Scott Horton Clarifies Historical Context of the Israeli Occupation in Gaza

In this episode, Scott Horton returns to the show. Scott is an anti-war and libertarian author and podcaster, as well as the director of the Libertarian Institute and senior editor for Antiwar.com. Scott was on the show last time to talk about the history of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This time, Scott is bringing the history of Israel and Gaza. In my recent episode with Kyle Anzalone we discussed some of the basic history and then focused on the current conflict and dynamics at play. Kyle mentioned that the phrase used about the Palestinians is that they "never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity." When you listen to summaries of the history by Ben Shapiro, he breaks down multiple times that the state of Israel has tried to give the Palestinians their own state, and they turned it down. I asked Scott to answer these claims, and other claims made about the history of the formation of the nation-state of Israel. The truth that Scott reveals is that the Israeli government is not exhausting all options for peace, but rather enforcing the status quo to preserve their hegemony. Listen to the full episode to get an in-depth breakdown of these different stages in the history of Israel and Gaza. Ep 39Ep. 39: What Does the Christian Religion Teach About Politics? Why I'm Not an Anarchist

In my time podcasting, I've often had people respond to the ideas and arguments I discuss on my show with agreement to the content, but a disdain for the term "anarchy". So, why do I use that word? Do I consider myself to be an anarchist? Well, the truth is, no - I am not an anarchist. But, I use that term for a reason. In this episode, I dive into the history of the development of my platform and why I settled on the name "Biblical Anarchy". I look at the passages in 1 Samuel 8 and Mark 10 is guideposts to what the Bible teaches us about the human rulers and kingdoms, and what being part of God's Kingdom entails for Christians. Ep 38Ep. 38: Politicians Blinded to Blowback: Debunking the Israel War Propaganda

War has broken out in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. Innocent lives have been lost, both Israelis and Palestinians. War brings out the worst of humanity, as we see people on both sides engage in collectivism and escalation of violence. War also brings to the surface debates over history and current events, and each side has their own narrative. But what is the truth? Did Hamas just randomly decide one day to attack Israel for no reason other than hating Jews? Has the state of Israel done everything they can to exhaust peace measures and to give the Palestinian people equal rights and protections, or their own sovereignty? What role has American foreign policy played in this regional theater? Returning to the show is Libertarian Institute and AntiWar.com writer, podcaster and editor. Kyle joins me to discuss the history of this conflict and cut through the narratives and propaganda to strike at the truth of why this war broke out, and what we can do to hold leaders here and in the Middle East accountable so that peace can be thoughtfully and urgently pursued so that innocent lives might be saved. Ep 37Ep. 37: The Gospel's Revolutionary Message of Peace: A Resolution to End War

The recent events in Israel have added to an already heated discussion around US foreign policy and war. Hamas committed evil atrocities when they launched a deadly attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country is now at war, and cut off electricity and utilities to Gaza. They gave notice to northern Gaza telling them to evacuate as Israel prepared a ground invasion. As this unfolds, the media and politicians are out there making proclamations about how the US must support Israel. Others point to the Israeli treatment of the Palestinians in Gaza and say Israel deserved this, or at least brought this on themselves (the term libertarians use is "blowback". Regarding the truth of this specific conflict, I will be diving into that soon. I have Kyle Anzalone coming on the show next week to discuss the history and current political drives at play in this conflict between Israel and Hamas. But before we even go there, I think I need to take the time to make some things clear. I am Anti-War. And I think the rightful role of the Church and as followers of Christ is to be staunchly, as the intro to this podcast says, against both war and empire. So in this episode, I make again the case for why I think the Gospel message of Christ's work on the Cross and proclamation of the Kingdom of God should lead Christians who aim for their faith to impact ALL of their beliefs and actions to oppose war and be ever vigilant in pursuing peace here on Earth. Ep 36Ep. 36: Decentralization and Local Governance: A Strategic Plan for a Peaceful Revolution, with Dr. Michael Rectenwald

I interviewed Dr. Michael Rectenwald in this episode. Dr. Rectenwald is the author of twelve books, including "The Great Reset and the Struggle for Liberty: Unraveling the Global Agenda", and is a distinguished fellow at Hillsdale College and a frequent contributor to the Mises Institute. He was a Professor of Liberal Studies and Global Liberal Studies at NYU from 2008 to 2019. He also taught at Duke University, North Carolina Central University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Case Western Reserve University. His scholarly and academic essays have appeared in numerous public journals and outlets, including The Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics, The British Journal for the History of Science, and the Cambridge University Press anthology. He holds a Ph.D. in Literary and Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon University, a Master's in English Literature from Case Western Reserve University, and a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Pittsburgh. Michael recently announced his bid to seek the nomination of the Libertarian Party for President of the United States. We talked about his decision to run, and what he is hoping to accomplish with his campaign. We dived into multiple conversations, including how to effectively engage in local politics, the intersections between Christianity and libertarianism, our similar journeys to libertarianism/anarchism as two former leftists, and how libertarianism offers principles and effective solutions to divisive political/cultural issues such as abortion. Ep 35Ep. 35: What Does Romans 13 Teach Us About Earthly Powers?

In this episode, I dive into Romans 13 again. I read the passage and summarize the interpretation I and other reformed libertarians have of it. Then the bulk of this episode deals with an alternative take of Romans 13 that other Christians, including (but not exclusively) some Christian anarchists, have of the passage. While I don't entirely agree with this take, as it's often used as an exhaustive explanation, I see it as having merit in describing how Christians generally ought to respond to those who abuse authority/power. My aim is to explain how this passage can be both prescriptive of the moral norms of authority and civil governance while also being read as a teaching about how God's sovereignty means we can trust in Him, regardless of what circumstances we find ourselves in. In this episode, we return to interviews conducted at the 2023 Freedom Fest convention. I sat down with two individuals who discussed their individual organizations in Texas and New Hampshire and their pitch for National Divorce - Texas/New Hampshire Independence. I asked questions based on what the common objections and concerns are to the case for complete State sovereignty from the Federal government, and explored what practical steps the organizations are taking to educate people and ensure their efforts are peaceful and based on libertarian principles. Ep 32Ep. 32: Exposing the Theological Lies and Logical Failures of Christian Nationalism, w/ Alex Bernardo

In this episode, I had a conversation with Alex Bernardo of the Protestant Libertarian Podcast, a fellow LCI host. Alex has written a review of Stephen Wolfe's "The Case for Christian Nationalism" and presented his rebuttals in an article for LCI as well as a presentation he recorded for us to present at Freedom Fest this past year. After I finished the book myself and read Alex's review, we decided to sit down and compare notes, and dive into the key arguments for Christian Nationalism and answer what they get right, as well as what they get wrong. Ep 30Ep. 30: Breaking Barriers: Uniting Atheists and Christians through Libertarian Activism, w/ AFL President Thomas Sheedy

In this episode, we are again airing an interview I did at the 2023 Freedom Fest convention. This interview was with Atheists for Liberty President Thomas Sheedy. He and I had never spoken before but were both excited to sit down and talk, to explore what we had in common, and to explore where we disagreed as well. We found that many of the criticisms we had about each other's worldview were at least understood or partially shared by the other, and we explored the potential ways - as individuals and also on an organizational level - that we might be able to work together to use our different worldviews as an advantage to advancing libertarian principles into the public arena. We walked away optimistic about the potential for libertarianism to be an uniting force that helps promote peace between all groups of people, including the religious and non-religious. Ep 29Ep. 29: Dismantling Collectivism - Why YOU are the Power, with Spike Cohen

In this episode, we are again going to hear an interview I did at the 2023 Freedom Fest LCI booth - this time with Spike Cohen. Spike is the founder of "You Are the Power," a non-partisan non-profit organization with the goal to "empower people to work together to set our communities free, take the power away from government, and put it back in your hands, where it belongs." Spike sat down with me to have a conversation about Nationalism. LCI was at Freedom Fest to discuss Nationalism and Christian Nationalism, and I wanted to get Spike's perspective on these topics. Spike believes that nationalism can be a useful tool in pushing decentralization and pushing back against encroaching globalism and more centralization. Nationalism can become harmful, however, when it prioritizes the good of the collective over the good and rights of the individual, and when that happens, it becomes not only a threat to human flourishing, but a force that is in opposition to what God teaches us through Scripture. Listen in to hear Spike and I dive deeper into these topics and explain why the best people to count on for your freedoms and rights are never those with State authority. Ep 28Ep. 28: Dispelling War Propaganda with the Libertarian Institute - Freedom Fest 2023

In this episode you will hear three different interviews I did at the 2023 Freedom Fest Convention in Memphis, Tennessee. I sat down with Scott Horton, Kyle Anzalone, and Connor Freeman of the Libertarian Institute to pick their brains about what's going on with both Russia and China, and what the imperialistic goals are of the American government and military industrial complex in these still developing situations. Scott gives us a bird's eye overview of where we are as the anti-war movement and how libertarians are making an impact on the culture and national conversation. Kyle and Connor then help explain in detail what specific developments are happening right now, and what lies the media and politicians are trying to sell to the American public and the world. In the face of so much propaganda, what can Christians, libertarians and all of us who oppose war and senseless bloodshed do to stand up to these wicked powers? These conversations hopefully serve to simultaneously educate you while also encouraging you as to our ability to use truth and free speech to curtail tyranny. Ep 27Ep. 27: Understanding Consent: Does Democracy Make Good What the Bible Calls Evil?

A common defense of the State and its authority or ability to tax comes in the form of using democracy as a sort of “cure-all” that re-frames aspects of the State that are not consensual or that are backed by force/coercion to be morally permissible. Is this philosophically sound? In this episode, we continue to engage with the Open AI software to explore logical fallacies in arguments made to defend statism, this time focusing in on democracy. Can voting or having representation in votes that ultimately decide the outcomes of people’s lives and property be morally justified? What is democracy, and is there anything special about it that would lend itself towards making otherwise immoral actions moral? What is consent? What do we mean by informed consent? Can consent be given under pressure or threats of violence? Does social conditioning play a role in determining true consent, and what Biblical principles come into play when making these moral calculations? These are questions that we attempt to answer in today’s episode. Ep 23Ep. 23: Honor the Emperor: Does 1 Peter 2 Require Christians to Pledge Allegiance to the State?

Romans 13 has often been cited to support the State, but it's not the only passage that talks about submission to governing authorities. In this episode, I dive into the passage in 1 Peter 2 in which we are told to honor the emperor. What does it mean to give honor, and is honor always the same regardless of the person? Ep 14Ep. 14: Does the Conquest of Canaan Conflict with Anarchism?

In this episode, I sit down with fellow CFLN podcast host Gregory Baus, for a discussion on the conquest of Canaan as depicted in the OT Scripture. Often when talking about libertarian anarchist philosophy or the libertarian critiques of the State, the topic of war comes up. Libertarian anarchists generally take oppositional positions on war, often depicting themselves as being anti-war on the whole. As Christians, our view on war should be, as with all things, be informed by a sound reading and understanding of Scripture. Often then the pushback from the Christian worldview against the anarchist/anti-war position is that God commanded wars of conquest in the OT and therefore Christianity cannot be compatible with the anarchist position on war. Greg and I both take a high view of Scripture and both are self described Libertarian Anarchists. In our conversation we dive into this objection and answer it by unpacking the conquest of Canaan to understand where it fits into God's sovereign redemptive plan, and hope to demonstrate that the Conquest of Canaan doesn't teach us about the glory or goodness of wars of conquests as part of what God has established as morally normative, but instead the opposite; that through a sound understanding of those passages in the context of ALL of Scripture teaches us that offensive wars are today not God honoring but rather rebellion against that which God has commanded. If you like this conversation, make sure to check out Gregory's work on his podcast Reformed Libertarians, a fellow show within CFLN. Gregory mentions an episode of the Glory-Cloud Podcast that may also be of interest (ep. 026) on the topic. Also see the work of his co-host, Kerry Baldwin, at https://mereliberty.com. Ep 13Ep. 13: Russia and Ukraine: Dissecting the War Machine, with Liam McCollum

In this episode, Liam McCollum returns to the show to dive deeper into the Russia/Ukraine conflict. We explore the many ways in which American foreign policy decisions over the past few decades have worked to continuously antagonize and provoke hostility from Russia, by repeatedly breaking promises and sabotaging peace efforts. We explore the different perspectives held on both sides of the conflict to demonstrate how war is always a failure to communicate, and increasing empathy and understanding of different people and groups is key to avoiding and diffusing conflict. Each side always feels justified in their actions, and the truth can be much more complicated and convoluted. We must maintain a Kingdom mentality a Christians when we observe these conflicts, and be the voice that speaks out against the war machine that seeks to only increase the power and wealth of the ruling classes, at the expense of however many human lives it costs them to succeed. Ep 12Ep. 12: Christians Raging Against the War Machine, with Irene Mavrakakis

In this episode, I sat down to talk with Irene Mavrakakis M.D. Irene is a Christian, libertarian, physician, chair and state board rep of Kent County, Libertarian Party of Delaware and co-founder of Liberty Speaks - one of the sponsors of Rage Against the War Machine, an anti-war rally/event taking place 2/19 in DC where anti-war activists will be making demands for the American support for the Ukraine/Russian war to end, and for American interventionist foreign policy in general to be halted. In this conversation Irene talked with me about her background, her organization Liberty Speaks and work inside the liberty movement and Libertarian Party, and the cultural significance of the upcoming rally. We also discussed the Christian perspective on war and how Nationalism often divides us in ways that are antithetical to what Scripture teaches. Ep 11Ep. 11: Objections to Anarchy, Answered: How the Free Market Can Provide Defense and Security

In this episode, we return to the Internet to find objections to anarchy and decentralization. The specific objections we tackle today are "How would an anarchist society protect people from criminals or from foreign invasion?" As well as "What would prevent corruption or the emergence of warring factions in an anarchist society?” Does the state have a monopoly on law and defense? Or, does anarchism have incentive structures, and mechanisms that are superior? https://mises.org/library/possibility-private-law https://mises.org/library/private-law https://www.amazon.com/Private-Production-Defense-Hans-Hermann-Hoppe/dp/1933550589?dplnkId=a9870401-ea5b-4c3b-b95d-d6fda43bb891&nodl=1 The Biblical Anarchy Podcast (https://BiblicalAnarchyPodcast.com) is part of the Christians For Liberty Network (https://christiansforliberty.net), a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute (https://libertarianchristians.com).

Ep 10Ep. 10: Gay Marriage; Should Christians be in Favor of Legislating Against Sin?

In an ever increasingly secular society, Christians often feel convicted to take a stand and use whatever means they have at their disposal to push back against a culture rebelling against God, and biblical principles of right and wrong. This often includes a desire to use the civil legislature, or the state, to pass laws for basing certain sinful actions. In this episode, we try to break down what the Bible says about homosexuality and marriage, and what the Christian response to growing sin in the culture should be. https://corechristianity.com/resource-library/articles/i-thought-christians-were-stupid-bigots/ https://youtu.be/sZsa7_mQT_M The Biblical Anarchy Podcast (https://BiblicalAnarchyPodcast.com) is part of the Christians For Liberty Network (https://christiansforliberty.net), a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute (https://libertarianchristians.com).

Ep 7Ep. 7: Render Unto Caesar: Are Christians Supposed to Pay Taxes?

What does it mean to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's? As Christians are we called to pay our taxes, and if so, is that because taxation is what God has established as the morally just mechanism for funding public services in society? In this episode we dive into the Matthew 22 passage this phrase is sourced from, and seek to use historical and theological context to explain what this passage is actually saying, not what proponents of the state have twisted it to mean. Ep 6Ep. 6: How the State Fails to Promote Health and Safety, with Guest Greg

On this episode I had a conversation with Greg, the Secretary of the Libertarian Party Sober Caucus. Drew, the founder, started the LPSC in early 2021 to combat the state and how it actively works against recovery. Most of the leadership of the LPSC come from places of addiction themselves and are compassionate to the struggle. At the same time, however, they are against prohibition and believe a freer market can help more than hurt. A summary of their mission as said by the founder: "We as members of the Sober Caucus; feel from our personal experience, along with a plethora of data that the "War on Drugs' has been a failed endeavor costing trillions of dollars, countless lives, and untold damage to families. Our purpose as the Sober Caucus is to empower individuals using Libertarian principles and policies to encourage a sober lifestyle. We encourage the legality of safe use and distribution of all mood and mind altering substances. We would like to see the end of the draconian 'War on Drugs' in our lifetime. It is a gross miscarriage of justice to cage people who pursue happiness by their own means. It is also equally heinous to punish those seeking to self-medicate physical and/or mental illnesses by all means available to them. "We seek Free Market mechanisms to empower domestic entrepreneurship supply, processing, and distribution ending the dangers currently faced with prohibition. These policies will create accountability for producers and mitigate violence of criminal enterprise in the black market. "Whereas the 'War on Drugs' has caused more damage than the drugs themselves, we seek to eliminate any legislation pursuing criminal charges against individuals for possession, use, manufacture, and distribution. It is time to surrender to reality and end the theft of liberty over victimless crime." Greg and I explored these ideas and further elaborated on the intersection between freedom and sobriety. Ep 5Ep. 5: Decentralization: The Natural Order of Anarchy - Social Cooperation According to the Bible

In this episode, we take to the Internet to take on what other Christian thinkers have said about the compatibility of Christianity and anarchy based on what the Bible says. Specifically, a common argument that anarchy is chaos and a void of law and order, and thus incompatible with what the Bible teaches about authority in government, is made in an article by gotquestions.org. Are they right? Or, is there some misunderstandings about what anarchy is, and what passages in the Bible pertaining to these topics are instructing? Jump into the episode to find out! Ep 4Ep. 4: Fair Wages: What the Parable of the Vineyard Workers Says About Value

Property Rights - why are they foundational to understanding how we are to love our neighbor? Why is the economy something Christians should care about, and what does the Bible say about property rights and the economy? In today's episode, the first in a series on Biblical Economics, we seek to answer the question of where value comes from, and what do we owe people/what is Biblically normative when it comes to trade, rights and value? Ep 2Ep. 2: The Temptation of Control & The First Sin

In this episode we, dive into the temptation of control that plagues mankind, a theme that is so embedded in our existence that it permeates our literature, movies, and culture. We dive into the Bible to see examples of this temptation and how it can be traced all the way back to the garden and the fall itself. Does the Bible teach us to control and dominate the world around us, or to relinquish control to God and to be servants? We attempt to answer those questions in this dive into the Scriptures. Ep 1Ep. 1: What is Biblical Anarchy?

What does the Bible teach us about governance, authority and human relationships? What is Anarchy? Is it violent revolutionaries or radical pacifism? In this pilot episode of the Biblical Anarchy Podcast, we dive into these topics and set the stage for what this podcast's focus and goal will be, and I make an opening argument for why following the Bible consistently leads us to reject the State and kingdoms of men in favor of a system of decentralized governance that promotes Christian virtues of social cooperation, peace, and true justice.
