In this video listen to Numbers 27 read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer.

In Numbers 27 two points are covered. First, How exactly does a father keep his family name, and his inheritance, when he has only daughters? This chapter explains how.

Some of the specific details as to how this would happen were ironed out in Numbers 36 where the daughters would be required to marry within their tribe only. Spiritually this is a precursor to the New Testament position where if you are in Christ you receive an inheritance. According to Paul there is no greek or jew, no male or female, and no slave or free.

In Christ inheritance is for everyone. Second, Moses does as the Lord commands and anoints his successor, passing on his authority. Such a godly thing alleviates a succession struggle afterwards, and also allows grace to pass from father to son in the Lord.

It is now going to be Joshua and Eleazar instead of Moses and Aaron. The laying on of hands is a real thing, because the Lord decrees it. The New Testament says not to lay hands on someone hastily, not only because of what people will think, or because of the danger of pride to the individual, but because of the spiritual power that is attached.

An amateur in such a position is ill equipped to handle the opinions of others, the pride and the power. But Joshua is hardly an amateur. Aside from Moses, only Caleb is older than 40 years old. He has served faithfully for 40 years, and was one of only two to keep the faith during the years of testing. Joshua is a type of Christ.
