In this video listen to Numbers 16 read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer.
In Numbers 16 we find the story of Korah, a Kohathite responsible for moving the tabernacle. He was not a priest, because he was not a son of Aaron. He wanted elevated responsibility, and wanted a position not assigned to him. He had ministry jealousy.
The need for recognition is something we all have. Why God chose Moses who didn’t want to be chosen, and didn’t choose Korah and others who did want to be chosen is not something we have been told, but it is almost certainly something to do with the inner workings of the heart. As a pastor I have long trusted people who have a big heart for the ministry, but are not self promoters.
On the other hand, when someone pushes themselves forward, even if they are talented, it's hard to feel good about trusting them. What is needed is the spirit of sonship in God’s people, which is the attitude Christ had towards his father in Heaven. We need this sonship towards the leaders over us here and now, because how we love and serve them that we can see, IS how we love and serve God that we cannot see.
Joshua and Caleb were two individuals who displayed a heart of sonship towards Moses, supporting and serving with a big heart. Joshua inherited the ‘ministry’ from Moses despite not asking for it, whereas in this story, the rebels were cut off despite seeking the ministry.
This video discusses ministry jealousy, the calling of God, and how to love your spiritual leaders with a spirit of sonship, that is the attitude that Christ had towards his father.
