In Nehemiah 10 there is a revival at work, and the people’s hearts are moved towards the Lord and his Law. But they make a disastrous move… they make a covenant, which is something only God should make.
Trying to keep the law with one’s own covenant or effort cannot succeed. Yes the heart must agree with what the Lord says, but Christ on this matter said, “let your yes be yes” and “no be no” because “anything else comes from the evil one.” (Matt 5:37)

We also share the example of the revival at Northampton under the oversight of Rev Jonathan Edwards. What was started by the Spirit’s leading, cannot be sustained by human effort and will ultimately break down, as it did in both cases. IN the case of Northampton it broke down with a loss of enthusiasm, and in the case of Israel it turned into harsh legalism.
