In this video listen to 1 Chronicles Chapter 18, read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer.

In 1 Chronicles 18 you get the impression here, that it is after David sorts out the rightful place of the Lord, he then defeats all his enemies. (see verse 1) The book of Chronicles isn’t just history, but also explanation. It teaches us something of why as well as what and who like Kings & Samuel do. However, while the explanation is correct, we learn in Samuel 7:1 that Daivd actually defeats his enemies first and then makes a place for the Lord.

Why is the timing switched around in this chapter? Both of these things actually go together. David was planning on making a place for the Lord all along, and the defeat of the enemies was actually a part of serving God. If we go back to the time of Joshua, when they were to drive out the inhabitants of the land, that IS what God instructed. So David Is doing exactly what he knows God wants, and then after this, he turns to the temple.

The account seems back to front here, because it is applying a theological and personal meaning. When we get the place of the Lord sorted out properly, we have victory over our enemies, but part of the process of making a place for the Lord IS removing the things which compete with him in our affections.
