In 1 Samuel Chapter 30 David’s family is kidnapped from Ziklag. Ziklag is a town only recently unearthed in archaeology, since 2015 and contains the burn layer that matches the biblical story. This is a chapter about great disappointment for David, for his soldiers and for their families who were undoubtedly terrified in captivity.
The Amalekite raiders were taking them south to the Egyptian slave markets, along with great plunder. David enquires of the Lord, gets the green light, and pursues them. At the brook Besor, about twenty kilometres south west, two hundred of the soldiers are too exhausted to continue, so they are left behind.
After all is recovered they are rewarded equally despite not participating in the battle, marking a turning point in how war remuneration was conducted. In this incredible chapter David is symbolic of Christ in a number of ways.
In David Guzik’s enduring word commentary he makes these five points:
We are like David’s men, David is like Jesus. · We are like the weary ones left behind, David is like Jesus.
We are like the Egyptian slave, David is like Jesus.
We are like the spoil David recovered, David is like Jesus.
We are like the elders of Judah, and David is like Jesus. Finally there is the promise of recovery for all of those who have been attacked by the enemy. Some have lost loved ones, or health, or many calamities, but in Christ we are able to find hope, restoration, salvation, and much.
All is in Christ.
