In this video listen to 1 Kings Chapter 16, read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer.

In 1 Kings Chapter 16 more crazy transitions of kingship happen in Israel. Elah is the fourth king of divided Israel, and the second king of the second dynasty. He is assassinated while drunk by Zimri, who becomes the fifth king of divided Israel, and the first king of the third dynasty. He only reigned a week, but in that time he completely killed the whole house of Elah of Bashan.

His was the shortest reign, and the shortest dynasty. Omri beseiges Tirzah, and Zimri commits suicide, so Omri is the sixth king, and the first king of the fourth dynasty. By this point in Israel we have had 6 kings and 4 dynasties. Crazy!!! Because the old palace at Tirzah was burned in fire by Zimri in his suicide. Omri now moves the capital to a new place, rather than rebuilding the old palace.

Samaria is where we get the name Samaritans from. After Omri, Ahab his son becomes the 7th king of Israel and the second king of the fourth dynasty. Ahab married Jezebel who pushes pure Canaanite idolatry and it becomes state sponsored religion.

At this point we now have all types of religion at work - True monotheism following the Lord - Syncretistic worship of the golden calves which “kind of” follows the Lord - Canaanite idolatry - A Samaritan religion also emerges which only holds to the Pentateuch.
