In this video listen to 1 Kings Chapter 15, read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer.

In 1 Kings Chapter 15 the Bible really starts moving through the kings. We have Abijam (sometimes called Abijah), King number 2 of Judah after the division, who was evil. Then we have Asa, king 3 of Judah. In the north we have Nadab, king 2 of Israel after the division, and then a new dynasty with Baasha. Baasha is king 3 of Israel, and king 1 of the second dynasty.

Baasah assassinated Nadab and every man in his family just as the prophet Ahijah said in the previous chapter. These family assassinations become very common in Israel, the northern nation as time progresses. In this chapter, weirdly, both Asa here and Abijam above seem to have the same mother but they are actually father and son.

This is because often words explaining fathers or mothers etc can mean direct or more distant ancestors. Josephus clears this up by explaining that Maacah was the granddaughter of Absalom, via Tamar, not the daughter, and in like manner, She was the mother of Abijam, and the grandmother of Asa.
