In 1 Kings Chapter 1 we cover the remaining 38 kings, and 1 queen of the nations of Israel and Judah. Samuel focussed on the first three kings, but now we are going to cover the rest. Ultimately through it all we are going to see that no human king is perfect, and hardly any of them are good, only seven.
The book starts with David being elderly and Adonijah, his oldest remaining son, aspiring to be king. When someone says “I will be king” they are on dangerous ground. This is what Lucifer said and plunged all creation into chaos. Christ IS the king of kings and yet he came to serve. It is the Lord who exalts. Adonijah is David’s fourth son - and his name means “My Lord is God.”
For David this was true, but Adonijah doesn’t seem to have walked in the same strict sense of doing things the Lord’s way. It must have been somewhat common knowledge that David wanted Solomon to be king, because Nathan knew it, and Adonijah didn’t invite Solomon to the ‘coronation’ event. Encouraged by Nathan the prophet and BAthsheba, David elevates Solomon while still alive, and this causes panic, and all of Adonijah’s help evaporates.
Solomon extends mercy to him for the moment. David and Solomon are technically king at the same time. David doesn’t seem to give the impression of a great father, but in the case of Solomon we know he took an interest because of things recorded in the book of Proverbs. With so many wives and so many children it would not be possible to spend quality time with them all, but he seems to spend time with Solomon - perhaps in an endeavor to ensure good things for the future.
