[370] IU-Minnesota Postgame Show: Tough-Minded Hoosiers Grind Out Win in The Barn

On Saturday evening, a short-handed Indiana team playing without De'Ron Davis and Collin Hartman defeated a similarly short-handed Minnesota squad that was playing without two starters. It was a game Indiana won with toughness, togetherness, grit, and the sensational play of a senior, two juniors, and a freshman. After the game, Jerod, Andy, and Ryan broke it all down on The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.Among the topics discussed:-- Robert Johnson's huge sequence of three-point plays in the 2nd half, which brought Indiana back from the brink-- Justin Smith's outstanding performance, and why his strong play Saturday doesn't necessarily mean Archie erred in not giving him bigger minutes sooner.-- The importance of Juwan Morgan's tone-setting toughness on the glass, and his newfound confidence stroking the 3.-- Why this is probably the most impressive all-around performance by Archie Miller as Indiana's coach -- both in-game and in terms of how prepared the team was to play.-- Whether or not there is anything from this game we can take seriously as a trend moving forward ... or if keeping this team at arm's length is for the best -- The return of #ZachMcRobertsThings and why they make all the difference for this particular group of Hoosiers, especially in games like these. We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. [369] Making Sense of the Post-Wisconsin Panic

Indiana's poor performance in the second half against Wisconsin, which led to yet another loss in Madison, seemed to set off a surge of panic among some members of the fan base. In this week's episode of The Assembly Call, we ...-- Try to make sense of why that happened-- Offer some reasons for why the panic is misguided-- Compare the Indiana situation to other schools with first-year head coaches-- Discuss the notion of Archie going more extreme with his benchings-- Assess the team's leadership void, how it can still be filled, and why it's there in the first placeAnd more. Also, we apologize for Ryan's short monologue about cereal ... and gut health. Pam, a looong-time listener, sent in the question. And when Pam submits a question, we take it. Ryan just took it too far. :-)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[368] IU-Wisconsin Postgame Show: Hoosiers Waste Opportunity to End Kohl Center Streak

On Tuesday night, Indiana delivered a dispiriting second half effort against a depleted Wisconsin roster and lost to the Badgers yet again in the Kohl Center. After the game, our crew broke it all down on The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.Among the topics discussed:-- Why Collin Hartman's first half scoring and overall play were one of the few bright spots for Indiana.-- The disappointment of yet another no-show half for the Hoosiers in a game that was there for the taking.-- De'Ron Davis delivering yet another underwhelming performance (and speculating on whether or not he's hurt).-- Why Juwan Morgan's performance left plenty to be desired, but was still a sign of his overall growth as a player.-- Why Devonte Green played so few minutes, and what is reasonable to expect from him moving forward.-- Zach McRoberts' production plummeting back to earth in his first. We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. [367] IU-Youngstown State Postgame Show: McRoberts and Morgan Lead the Way

After a rather underwhelming first half at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Friday night, Indiana led Youngstown State 29-20. The Hoosiers were struggling offensively, but Youngstown State was struggling even more -- especially from downtown. With Zach McRoberts inserted into the starting lineup in the second half, Indiana wasted no time asserting its dominance and putting the game on ice -- which is exactly what the Hoosiers should have done against a sub-300 opponent. In this edition of The Assembly Call, Jerod and The Coach, Brian Tonsoni, break down Indiana's performance, including:-- McRoberts' stellar all-around effort, which included two more 3-pointers!-- Juwan Morgan's workmanlike performance, and specifically a few key plays he made that stood out-- The continued struggles of Devonte Green, who had one of the most important plays of the game ... but also several of the worst-- Another strong outing from Josh Newkirk, especially in terms of his passing and defense-- Why Justin Smith's performance showed some of his tantalizing potential, but also the reasons why he isn't playing more-- What this game and the Tennessee Tech game tell us about how Archie Miller views his role with this team-- What (if anything) Indiana was able to do differently that caused Youngstown State's awful shooting from downtownPlus much more, including a particular issue we each have with how Robert Johnson and De'Ron Davis attack the basket when they get then ball in then paint. [366] Midseason Assessment and Why Ryan Hates Coach K

On this week's edition of Assembly Call Radio, we finally deliver on two long-awaited segments.First, we provide our midseason assessment of this year's Hoosiers. Ryan has said all season that it hasn't been fair to judge this team until late December. Well, late December is here. How do we feel about the team's progress? And what is a reasonable expectation for Big Ten season? Then, Ryan delivers his epic rant about Coach K. Many of you have emailed and tweeted us wondering when we'd finally record this segment. It's here, and you won't be disappointed ... unless you really like Coach K, but we're betting there aren't too many of you in this audience. :-)We also answer a few additional reader questions at the end, including one about Robert Phinisee that will go a long way toward telling the story of next season's team.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[365] Special Edition: Memories of the Remarkable 1993 Indiana Hoosiers

In the annals of Indiana history, no seasons are bigger than the five commemorated with banners in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Outside of those five seasons, two probably stand taller than any others: the 1975 season and the 1993 season. Most IU fans firmly believe that were it not for injuries (Scott May's arm, Alan Henderson's knee) those two seasons would have be commemorated with banners as well. This season marks the 25th anniversary of the 1993 season, which had been Indiana's last outright Big Ten championship before the 2013 team did it 20 years later. The '93 team was filled with IU legends: Calbert Cheaney, Greg Graham, Alan Henderson, Damon Bailey, Brian Evans, and more. And, of course, it featured Bob Knight still at the peak of his coaching powers. Plus, the '93 season had unique elements like Calbert breaking the Big Ten scoring record, Nick Nolte attending games as he prepped for his role as Pete Bell in Blue Chips, the legendary story of Ivan Renko, and so much more. For those of us who grew up immersed in IU basketball at the time, it was a truly special season -- perhaps the last when IU was truly at the epicenter of the college basketball universe. For this special edition episode, we convened an esteemed and enthusiastic panel to take a trip down memory lane and discuss the '93 season, as well as, inevitability, the Final Four season of 1992 that proceeded it. -- Bill Murphy, author of numerous books about the history of IU sports, including Branch and the recently released Indiana Hoosiers Fans Bucket List, which he wrote with Terry Hutchens. (Starts at 7:10)-- Galen Clavio, host of Crimson Cast, head of the IU Sports Media department, and occasional guest host of The Assembly Call. (Starts at 50:16) Note: if you want to watch the archived games that Galen has on his YouTube channel, use this link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwyoEBP715uxHe2tYn9GioA-- Chris Williams, the man behind the @IUArtifacts Twitter account and article series here at assemblycall.com. [364] IU-Tennessee Tech Postgame Show: Selflessness, Intensity Lead to Bounce-Back Win

Indiana needed a major bounceback performance after Monday night's utter collapse against Fort Wayne. The Hoosiers delivered on Thursday night. On this episode of The Assembly Call, Jerod Morris, Andy Bottoms, and Zach McCrite discuss:-- Why Indiana's selflessness on offense was key to exorcising its Fort Wayne demons-- The importance of playing through the paint (and why De'Ron Davis showed some important growth, even in limited minutes)-- Josh Newkirk's big night-- How Robert Johnson set the tone with his effort on defense-- The meaningful stretch that Freddie McSwain sparked in the first half-- What the numbers say about IU's 3-point defense in this battle-- Why Archie had to be a "raving lunatic" to get his team to play this way ... and what that says about this group of Hoosiers (which we already kind of knew)And much more. Stick around at the end too, because we go in-depth on Justin Smith and why he hasn't been seeing many minutes so far this season.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[363] IU-Fort Wayne Postgame Show: Indiana State All Over Again (But Worse)

For the second year in a row, Fort Wayne took advantage of a unfocused Indiana team that played well below its potential. On this edition of The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show we discuss:-- The one positive from tonight's game: Zach McRoberts' scoring outburst.-- How Robert Johnson's hot start quickly fizzled into one of his worst performances of the season.-- Why Juwan Morgan's solid stat line (he recorded another double-double) is very deceiving.-- The missed opportunities IU had in the second half to thwart Fort Wayne's momentum.-- What's up with De'Ron Davis? And at what point is he expected to produce, regardless of how good or bad the matchup is for him?-- How much blame should be laid at the feet of Archie Miller ... and what, specifically, the blame is for.And much more. Obviously this show is not nearly as enthusiastic as the Notre Dame show. But Andy and Jerod do their best to bring some patience and perspective to what was a very frustrating night -- a night where progress was nowhere to be found.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[362] IU-Notre Dame Postgame Show: The Juwan Morgan Game

This one may go down in the annals of Indiana basketball history as The Juwan Morgan Game. Indiana's junior forward was spectacular on Saturday afternoon, leading his Hoosiers to a much-needed overtime victory against Notre Dame in the Crossroads Classic. On this edition of The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show, Jerod and Ryan discuss Morgan's magnificent performance, break down why Zach McRoberts was so essential to Indiana winning, highlight the many huge 3-pointers hit by Robert Johnson, and laud Archie Miller for a game well managed. We also discuss why De'Ron Davis struggled, and Ryan shares what Mike Brey told him in Maui about Archie Miller and Indiana ... which proved pretty prophetic on Saturday.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[360] IU-Louisville Postgame Show: So Close...Again

It was another hard-fought loss for Indiana in this one. The Hoosiers played well to start the game, but slowly started to fade from there. [358] IU-Iowa Postgame Show: Hoosiers Rally in 2nd Half for Runaway Win

This was a game of major runs. Indiana went on a 19-6 run to end the first half, then Iowa countered with a 17-5 run to start the second half, and finally Indiana regained control and blew the game open with a 29-9 run to build a 77-55 lead before Iowa scored a few buckets to make the final score look more respectable.Juwan Morgan again led the way for Indiana, notching another double-double and saving his best play for the most crucial moments of the second half. The bench also came up big, as both Collin Hartman and Devonte Green were key members of the lineup during Indiana's best stretches of play. Mix in some solid work on both ends from De'Ron Davis, plus 14 combined rebounds from Robert Johnson and Josh Newkirk, and the generosity of Iowa's 18 turnovers, and the result is a solid and very important win for Indiana. The Hoosiers now avoid the risk of a five-game losing streak (with Louisville and Notre Dame up next) and avoid a rough 0-2 start in conference play -- which is especially important given how the Hoosiers resume Big Ten play (with road games at Wisconsin and Minnesota).Andy Bottoms and Ryan Phillips broke it all down on the latest edition of The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[357] IU-MIchigan Postgame Show: A Learning Experience

After a hard-fought battle with Duke on Wednesday, Indiana came out slow against Michigan. Bad shot selection and lackluster defense at times plagued the Hoosiers down the stretch. There were promising signs that arose during a second-half run that cut the lead to double digits, but ultimately it was an experience from which to learn for Indiana.Special guest Galen Clavio Ryan break it all down on this edition of The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[355] IU-Duke Postgame Show: 35 Damn Good Minutes

Indiana played Duke, the #1 team in America (and one of the most talented in recent memory), to a draw through 35 minutes on Wednesday night. The score was 75-75, but from that point forward, Duke outscored the Hoosiers 16-6 to complete a 10-point victory. And while any loss, especially at home, is disappointing, there was plenty to be encouraged about in this IU performance. The Hoosiers have made quite a bit of progress over the last few weeks, while still having some glaring issues (free throw shooting and containing dribblers chief among them) that need to get fixed moving forward.Jerod, Andy, and Ryan break it all down on this edition of The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[354] IU-Eastern Michigan Postgame Show: Old Guards Lead Way to Best 40 Minutes of Season

It took six games, but the Indiana Hoosiers finally turned in their first consistent 40-minute performance on Friday afternoon in an impressive 87-67 victory over Eastern Michigan. -- Robert Johnson and Josh Newkirk led the way from a scoring perspective, combining for 35 points and a sterling 9-12 clip from downtown. -- Juwan Morgan was all over the place from an effort and energy perspective. -- Al Durham led an excellent ball-handling effort, as the freshman once again logged major minutes without a turnover, and his teammates followed suit with turnovers on just 13.3% of possessions. -- And, of course, Collin Hartman made his season debut, draining a 3 on his first possession to emphatically announce his return to regular season action. It wasn't a perfect performance, as the Hoosiers still allowed more than a point per possession, but it was a game that displayed the kind of progress the Hoosiers needed to show to give fans, and likely themselves, confidence that they have a puncher's chance next week against Duke. Jerod Morris and Andy Bottoms broke down all of the major storylines from this game on the latest edition of The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[353] IU-Arkansas State Postgame Show: Juwan Morgan's Dominance Leads Hoosiers

Indiana continues to struggle at the beginning of halves, but on Wednesday night their excellent play to close halves was the difference in a 17-point victory over Arkansas State. It was a game that showed, in spurts, how efficient this IU team can be when it limits turnovers and uses its defense to lead its offense. And, of course, it helps when you have a guy playing at a superstar level, and over the last two games Juwan Morgan has done exactly that. Against Arkansas State, Morgan had a career night, showing the full spectrum of what's capable of doing when healthy and in the flow of the offense.Jerod Morris and Andy Bottoms break every storyline from this game on The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show -- including why this was a much better performance from Robert Johnson than the box score may indicate.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[352] IU-South Florida Postgame Show: RoJo and Juwan Lead Strong 2nd Half Bounceback

Despite a strong first couple of minutes, Indiana played a mostly uninspiring first half against South Florida -- with turnovers and atrocious defensive rebounding contributing to a one-point halftime lead for South Florida (one of the worst remaining teams on Indiana's non-conference schedule).Indiana's play was so bad at one point that Archie Miller threw a towel in frustration, earning the first technical foul for an Indiana coach since ... do you even remember when? And while the immediate impact of Archie's tech was a 4-point swing in South Florida's favor, the long-term impact on the team seemed immensely positive. Because from that point on, Indiana outscored South Florida by roughly 20 points, showing a renewed commitment to ball security, a greater willingness to box out, and the kind of leadership by example and production from Robert Johnson and Juwan Morgan that everyone has been clamoring for. Johnson played strong defense and finally finding his shooting stroke, draining three triples and also executing several successful drives to the basket against a rather generous South Florida defense, while Morgan sparked Indiana in the second half by grabbing a handful of tough offensive rebounds and getting to line time after time through dogged effort in the paint. While the Hoosiers still need to prove that they can play more than 20 good minutes on any given night, there was plenty to like in the second half on Sunday night to be encouraged that this team took another step forward in its development.Jerod Morris and Andy Bottoms break it all down on the latest installment of The Assembly Call Postgame Show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[350] IU-Seton Hall Postgame Show: Solid First Half Disintegrates in Second

For 20 minutes on Wednesday night, we caught a glimpse into the future. Indiana took a couple of powerful blows from a very good Seton Hall team and the Hoosiers punched right back, displaying the mental toughness, physical toughness, and execution that was so sorely lacking through the season's first 80 minutes. But unfortunately, it all unraveled in the second half as the careless turnovers and ineffective defense were back, and Seton Hall imposed their will to dominate and win going away.Still, in a season that appears destined to be measured in small gains and silver linings -- especially early on -- this game gave us some positive signs to grasp onto. Justin Smith and Al Durham are better than expected, Devonte Green gives the offense occasional spurtability, and Juwan Morgan appeared healthy and more than willing to play tough and physical. As for Robert Johnson and De'Ron Davis, well, needless to say they have to be much better in Indiana's big games than they were on Wednesday night for the Hoosiers are to have any hope of winning one. [349] IU-Howard Postgame Show: Freshmen Step Up as Indiana Escapes with Win

Indiana defeated Howard -- the worst team on its schedule -- 86-77 on Sunday night in a game that was far closer than anyone predicted or hoped. The game featured yet another injury for Juwan Morgan, who appeared to sprain his ankle. Fortunately, Justin Smith was ready to take advantage of the extra minutes Morgan's injury provided. He, along with Al Durham and De'Ron Davis, made enough plays throughout the game to keep Howard at arm's length and give IU the W.On this episode of The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show, Andy Bottoms and Jerod Morris break down the IU victory and discuss how much these first 80 minutes of the season have forced them to adjust expectations for what this team will do moving forward.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[343] Romeo, Darius, and What KenPom Projections Mean for IU

On this week's edition of Assembly Call Radio, we discuss a number of topics. We begin by hitting on recruiting, of course, because it's been the hottest topic of the week. We discuss what we’re hearing about Romeo Langford and Darius Garland, and what it could all mean. Then we discuss the preseason KenPom rankings, which are now out. I crunched the numbers on how Indiana has fared recently against its preseason projections, and how Archie Miller’s Dayton teams fared. You won’t want to miss these results. Plus, we dissect what the projections suggest about Indiana’s non-conference schedule. (Note: Andy's a more little concerned than he anticipated being.)Next, we provide a few additional reflections on the Hoosier Hysteria scrimmage. Andy and I obviously dove deep on this in the post-scrimmage show (which, if you missed, was episode 342 of The Assembly Call). But we’ll now get to add Ryan’s thoughts to the mixAnd then we answer your questions -- and there were lots of good ones submitted this week. Also, I mention in this episode that our preseason donation drive is currently underway.
