Ep 68Ancient Civ: Origins - Ruins 68

Buckle up for an episode on the theory of the rise of early states and ancient civilizations. Episode 68 sets the stage for a series investigating early civilizations across the globe. We break down Elman Service and Lewis Henry Morgan's theories on cultural complexity and go through a couple of definitions for "civilization". Think that's going to be boring? Well just wait, we even talk about primary vs secondary civilizations and the four classic theories on how early complex civilizations rise.Of course, any episode involving the great mistake of neothilization wouldn't be complete without poking fun of our friend Stefan Milo.Literature Recommendations Ancient Civilizations by Chris Scarre & Brian M. Ep 149I Gotta Go: Archaeology of Abandonment - Dirt 149

This week, we’ve got an episode that started off as a funny title and became a topic. There are many possible reasons for abandoning a site, and there are plenty of examples from the archaeological record. We’ll look into evidence for climate change, conflict, natural disaster, and other reasons for abandonment (not all at once; that sounds like a really bad place to live). Ep 48The Rock Art of Los Angeles County with Albert Knight - Rock Art 48

Albert Knight traces his associations with rock art studies throughout his lengthy career and focuses on the nature of discovery and the most remarkable sites he has had the joy of working on. Burro Flats in the Simi Valley of southern California in Los Angeles County is akin to the Chumash rock art painted pictograph traditions. The site exhibits polychrome paintings within a rock shelter that some believe are documentation of the oral traditions and ritual activities associated with the movements and timing of the sun. There is a sun dagger that appears at the solstice and pierces a concentric circle element. The elements have been interpreted as representing the various deities and their interactions as represented in the Native sacred narrative.LinksCalifornia Rock Art FoundationContact Chris Webster [email protected] Twitter: @archeowebby Dr. Alan Garfinkel [email protected] ArchPodNet APN Website: https://www.archpodnet.com APN on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/archpodnet APN on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/archpodnet APN on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/archpodnet Tee Public Store Affiliates Wildnote TeePublic Timeular Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 160Geophysical Surveys in Ohio with Dr. Jarrod Burks - ArchaeoTech 160

Dr. Jarrod Burks of Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc joins us on the show today to talk about his pioneering geophysical work in Ohio. Dr. Jarrod Burks specializes in geophysically detecting the unseen archaeological record that surrounds us. He is also president of Heartland Earthworks Conservancy, an organization that works to study and save Ohio earthworks. Dr. Burks’ day job takes him all over the country, and beyond, to survey archaeology sites, cemeteries, and even look for lost WWII soldiers. Back home, he fell in love with Ohio’s Woodland period mounds and earthwork sites more than 25 years ago when he moved to Columbus to pursue his doctorate in Hopewell settlement research at The Ohio State University. He now spends a good amount of time each year surveying earthworks, retracing the footsteps of the 19th century mappers and travelers…as well as discovering previously undocumented sites.Links Ohio Archaeology Council Spring 2021 Meeting Jarrod Burks’ talk from the 2020 OAC Spring Meeting Contact Chris Webster Twitter: @archeowebby Email: [email protected] Paul Zimmerman Twitter: @lugal Email: [email protected] ArchPodNet APN Website: https://www.archpodnet.com APN on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/archpodnet APN on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/archpodnet APN on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/archpodnet Tee Public Store Affiliates Wildnote TeePublic Timeular Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 219The Realities of Pay Scales in Context of Scoping and Bidding Work - CRMArch 219

There has been quite a bit of talk on social media recently centering on pay scales for archaeologists and how the average rate should be/can be increased to meet a threshold that is livable and commensurate with experience and skills. There are some that assume that upper management is out to cheat the average arch tech. Although that may be true in some cases, the subject is much more complex than just an arbitrary decision or pay. The only way to improve the current climate with respect to pay is to understand the driving forces behind pay rates. Ep 61Just the Boyz But It's Revolutionary Part II (Do not operate heavy machinery or drive while listening to this episode) - Ruins 61

In this episode, we continue talking about the Revolutionary War, aka the War for American Freedom, aka ‘Merica War’.We hope this one is more factual and just as hilarious as Episode 57.We recount the events following the Crossing of the Delaware River, highlight Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, the winter at Valley Forge, the alliance between France and the US, and how this alliance changed the outcome of the war, with some archaeological case studies sprinkled throughout the narrative. We get into a discussion about the traitorous Benedict Arnold and his relationship to Eggs Benedict, the Articles of Confederation, and the end of the war.We spend some time promoting the importance of battlefield archaeology and its importance for learning more about the War for American Independance. We end the snoozer with some ridiculous banter.Literature recommendationsLiDar Documentation of Historical SitesValley Forge Bayonets articleBattlefield Archaeology at Kings MountainThe importance of battlefield archaeologyContact Email: [email protected] Instagram: @alifeinruinspodcast Facebook: @alifeinruinspodcast Twitter: @alifeinruinspod Website: www.alifeinruins.com ArchPodNet APN Website: https://www.archpodnet.com APN on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/archpodnet APN on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/archpodnet APN on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/archpodnet Tee Public Store Affiliates Wildnote TeePublic Timeularr Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 142Star-Struck by Ancient Astronomy - Dirt 142

People in the past looked up at the stars and planets, too. How did ancient cultures perceive the night sky? How did they explain the movement of celestial bodies? How did astronomy figure into ancient religion, calendars, city planning, and more? Was it aliens? Nope, but it was pretty much all math. Ep 1108th Anniversary Emily Wilding Davison Death. - Dr D. Atkinson & Dr B. Hassett - Flipside 1

This episode turned out to be rather the diverse discussion, inspired by the 108th Anniversary of the death of Emily Wilding Davison, suffragette, teacher and martyr in her last act of defiance. Everything from the lady herself to the wider suffragette movement, women's rights reception, our own personal heroes in the fields of history, archaeology and heritage and well... what exactly is the state of the situation now. All discussed with the help of Dr D. Atkinson & Dr B. Hassett, TrowelBlazer's in their own right!MusicIntro/Outro Music - Creative Commons - "Fantasia Fantasia" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com). Ep 1Introducing: Flipside - Flipside 0

All the history we read in the history books can begin to seem a little mundane, but history also has a Flipside. Each month we take an historical event anniversary and, admittedly sometimes tenuously, extract a discussion topic from it, then we ask guests from the history, archaeology and heritage spheres to sit down and have a chat with us about it... no holds barred; these discussions could head off in any number of tangents. Ever wondered how suffragette martyr Emily Wilding Davison, a little-known hieroglyph specialist and the modern gender pay-gap are linked, well except from all being in one single episode of Flipside that is... listen and find out! And as always, stay safe, and we'll see you on the Flipside! #OnTheFlipsideMusicIntro/Outro Music - Creative Commons - "Fantasia Fantasia" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com).
