The U.S. Supreme Court has dealt a major blow to Trump. What does it mean for Canada?
The Supreme Court of the United States has dealt a major blow to U.S. President Donald Trump, ruling 6–3 that he overstepped his authority by imposing sweeping global tariffs under emergency powers. The court found that the U.S. Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to levy taxes, including tariffs, striking down duties imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. While some tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos remain in place under different laws, the decision injects new uncertainty into global trade, including Canada-U.S. relations.
