Publish Your Poems! with Poet Barbara Sweeney — 99

Whether you are 8 or 80, it’s never too early or too late to become a published author. Today’s guest proves that. I am chatting with Barbara Sweeney, who just happens to be my aunt. For her 80th birthday last year, I offered to compile her poems into a book and publish them for her. It took us almost a year of working together through emails and phone calls to collect the poems she wanted to share, format them, proofread them, create a cover, and finally hit that publish button. And we did so before she turned 81. I’ve written some of my own poems, but I found that Aunt Barbara really is a master of the craft. I enjoyed getting to know this side of my aunt, reading her poems, and now sharing with you the opportunity to experience the comfort, companionship, and wonder these poems afford. I encourage you to head over to Amazon to snag your own copy of Echoes of Grace today. Now listen in as Barbara Sweeney and I talk poetry! Your friend, D.K. 088 || Wonder How to Brainstorm Your Story Ideas with Confidence? Listen to this LIVE Brainstorming Session.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear me share my ideas for a Christmas play I am writing for my children’s church kids to perform on December 10. Normally, I don’t like like to share my ideas with others until I’ve organized my thoughts and have a clear direction for my story. The League of Adventurous Authors has changed that. In addition to weekly check-ins to share wins and goals, AI art play days, and Q&A days, we also have Author Spotlight sessions. During these spotlight sessions, one author reads a snippet of a story he’s written, and the members have a chance to provide feedback. In the Spotlight Session you’ll hear today, I am the author sharing a story idea, and then you’ll hear the feedback discussion that followed, feedback that helped me gain clarity about my story so that I was able to write a better draft of the script after this meeting. If you’re interested in becoming a member of the League of Adventurous Authors, mark your calendars for December 27 when membership reopens. For now, listen in as I share my story ideas, how I used AI to help me write a bad first draft of the play I’m writing, and what feedback the League authors shared. Let’s get to it! Happy Friday! I’m reading chapter 37 of The Dragon Collector for you today. This chapter starts the setup of the events leading to the end of Act II and the final turning point that launches the story into Act III. In this chapter, Javan finds himself in the middle of a massive slow-moving crowd. Usually when I’m in a crowd, it’s because I’m on my way to an event like a play or a professional ball game or because I’m at an amusement park and navigating my way to fun rides. The crowds aren’t fun, but the destination is. Not so for Javan. He’s stuck in a crowd that is gathering to watch an execution. Even worse, the person being executed is his mother. 082 || Fantasy Fiction Friday: Chapter 36 of The Dragon Collector, a YA Fantasy Novel

It’s Fantasy Fiction Friday! Today I’m reading chapter 36 of The Dragon Collector for you. I did not like writing this chapter. An innocent kid got hurt, and I couldn’t let my hero help him. As I wrote the middle part of this chapter, I imagined it from three points of view: my main guy Javan, the kid who got hurt, and the villain Micah who hurt the kid. At first I thought Micah was pure evil for doing what he did. Then I remembered who Micah is and why he felt compelled to do what he did. I thus tacked on the short scene at the end to give you a glimpse into his mind. Let’s go to Zandador! 079 // Fantasy Fiction Friday: Chapter 35 of The Dragon Collector, a YA Fantasy Novel

Today’s Fantasy fiction Friday episode is coming to you on storytelling Saturday just to shake things up a bit. In this chapter of The Dragon Collector, we see the first hint of romance for Javan, some backstory on the romance of his grandparents, and some foreshadowing about what’s to come in books two, three, and four. Here’s a storytelling tip for you. Telling backstory with narrative tends to be boring. Making it part of a conversation is a much more interesting to share the same information without putting your readers to sleep. I thus orchestrated a conversation between Javan and his grandmother as she answers his question: Why does Ravier hate me? Through the answer, we get to know Ravier a bit better, and that helps us understand why he has such a grumpy attitude toward his grandson. Enough explanation. Let’s go to Zandador! 077// Fantasy Fiction Friday: Chapter 34 of The Dragon Collector, a YA Fantasy Novel

Happy Friday! I’ve got chapter 34 of The Dragon Collector ready for you today. It’s not an action-packed chapter, but not every chapter in your book should be filled with non-stop action. Your characters need downtime to recover, and so do your readers. That’s why pacing in a book is so important. Go too fast and pack too much in and you exhaust your readers. Go too slow and take forever to get to the action and you bore your readers. We don’t want our readers to be bored or exhausted. We want them to be engaged, to feel like they are right there with your characters experiencing the story as it happens even during scenes like the ones you’ll hear today where you as the author have to set up the next adventure. 074 // Feeling Isolated as a Teen Author? 3 Ways to Connect with Other Authors

Feeling isolated as a teen author? Wondering if you’re the only one who thinks the way you do? Who dreams the way you do? Who understands this crazy desire you have to make up people and worlds and stories? I get it. I felt isolated for years. Decades, really. Which was unnecessary. I didn’t have to feel alone. And neither do you. Today I’m sharing three ways I have learned how to connect with other authors that will help you do the same. Listen in to find out how to conquer that feeling of isolation. DK Next Steps: Sign up for the Writing Workshop on August 23! During this workshop, you will learn the basic principles of the three-act story structure. This three-act framework is the backbone of great storytelling, so when you understand this structure, your stories become easier to write and harder for readers to put down once they start reading. Since you don’t really learn something until you experiment with that knowledge, we’re going to do some writing experimentation during this workshop. We’ll let AI do the fast writing for us to demonstrate the structure elements, and every attendee will have chance to contribute at least one idea towards the creation of this story. So if you show up and participate, you will have the chance to be a contributor of a short story I will read on this podcast in a future episode. Did I mention it’s free to attend? And that the amazing group of guys who are making incredible progress on their books within the League of Adventurous Authors will be in the workshop? And that I’ll be opening the doors to the League at the end of this workshop? Well, it is free. The authors in the League will be attending. And you’ll have a chance to join the League when I reopen the membership again at the end of the workshop. 070 // 2 Recent Discoveries that Verify the Bible is True (Why Believe the Bible series, part 5)

Hello, hello! As a Christian author, it’s important to know how to write well. It’s far more important, however, to have a strong faith foundation. The more you know about God, the more you learn about you. And people. Such knowledge allows you to write rich characters that connect with readers. The foundation of our faith is the Word of God. So we better believe the Word is true. How can we believe that, though? Should we blindly believe the Bible is true because it claims to be the inspired word of God? Does God expect us to just take His word for it, or does He provide tangible proof from outside sources? As we’ve seen in episodes 66, 67, 68, and 69, He provides an abundance of proof in the way of prophetic prophecies, historical records, and even medicine. In today’s final episode in the Why Believe the Bible series, we’ll explore some recent and significant archaeological discoveries that once again prove the Bible is true. Listen in as my dad Harry Schaefer continues to teach from his fancy recording studio…which also doubles as his dining room. Here’s Harry! 069 // 1 Unlikely Source Outside the Bible that Helps Prove the Bible is True (Why Believe the Bible series, part 4)

Welcome to the fourth episode in the Why Believe the Bible series taught by my awesome dad Harry Schaefer. The underlying premise of the series is that we can verify the truth of the Bible by looking to outside sources such as the historical record to see if what’s in the historical record aligns with scripture. And we find that it does. In episodes 66, 67, and 68, we looked at ways prophetic prophecies and archeological findings prove the Bible is true. Today, we’ll look into an interesting outside source by exploring the realm of medicine and find out what soap, masks and quarantines have to do with the Bible. To explain, I’m handing the microphone to my dad as he continues to teach from his dining room table. Here’s Harry!
