S7 Ep 352Ray Schall Savings Lives at Narconon Suncoast
I'm a native Floridian, born and raised in Sarasota. I had a very normal Floridian childhood, swimming and fishing in local ponds and lakes. Nothing extraordinary. I graduated Sarasota High School in 1982 and joined the United States Army. I served for six years so I could use the GI Bill to help pay for my college education. After the Army I endured the long process of obtaining a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and immediately went to work for a German company as a Drives and Controls Engineer. I worked for them for 23 years designing microprocessors and control systems for large scale automated custom manufacturing machinery. I also designed facility wide power distribution for entire manufacturing plants. For 23 years I traveled extensively worldwide supporting the installation and custom programming of the machinery we designed and built. At the age of 47 years, this organization was purchased by a competitor and the engineering and manufacturing was relocated to Mexico. I chose not to move to Mexico, so I retired. It was at this point I developed a severe addiction to alcohol. I spent years battling this addiction. I would do well for a year or two, and then spiral out of control and wind up hospitalized. I continued this roller coaster cycle for ten years until finally one day, in the hospital, a friend told me about the Narconon program. At first, I wasn't interested because I related the name Narconon to narcotics (drugs) and I was never a drug user. After I spoke to the Executive Director at Narconon I was convinced this program could help. It was probably the best decision I ever made because now not only am I sober, but I also have a meaningful purpose in life. I became the Director of Intake and Registration at Narconon Suncoast where I have the opportunity every day to change someone's life just as mine was changed. https://www.narconon-suncoast.org/ HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. S7 Ep 349Josh Datant Villareal Music in Recovery
Well obviously my name is Josh. Basically in a nutshell as it were I was a careered musician and was very successful in many capacities. I once owned a recording studio with Gordon Raphael (producer of the strokes & Regina Spektor) after getting my own record deal I worked on my debut album with Anthony Braun Perry and Scott Montoya (both from the band the growlers) and was well on my way. I have met and worked with many successful musicians and others in the entertainment business for years, and had built up quite a catalogue of gear and equipment along with a nice shiny resume. I had a house a supportive girlfriend who actually quit her job to work with me on my career full time because she believed in mine that much. I had custody of my autistic and diabetic son from a previous relationship. Life was good then I gave it all away for one small yet very big thing. That thing was so elusive and so deceitful. It was so romantic looking and yet so insidious. That thing was heroin. I've dabbled in drugs and alcohol for a long time and they sunk their teeth into my life long ago but I was always able to go dry for a while so I thought I had it under control. Through everything I've lost and all the problems I've gained it all changed October 1st, 2021. You see after a few jail stints and a prison sentence I basically just resigned myself to drugs and thought ok music is over so I'll become a full-fledged criminal. But this last year I got in trouble once again with the law and to my surprise instead of sending me back to prison they gave me probation and when I screwed that up I thought surely they'll send me back now but they didn't; they gave me a corrections based treatment program. When I left there I relapsed once again while living with my brother and ended up getting into a huge fight with him about who was the better addict. My brother had his own demons but in his mind he was ok because he was still living in his own place with a job and a car. So he kicked me out after the fight and that was the last I ever spoke to him. I feel very fortunate indeed but it came with a price and with consequences. Sadly my brother passed away from drugs a few months ago as did my ex girlfriend so those things and a few other things blessed me with the gift of desperation. But I'll tell you, through my brother's death I was able to be reborn. On September 31st, 2021 I was parked in a car I had borrowed from a friend while he was doing some time in jail and I tried to shoot myself in the head not long after I found out about my brother. However, before I could get the gun against my temple it randomly went off right before I got it in the place I wanted. So I had just done a bunch of heroin and from the adrenaline shock and the last bit of drugs; I fell asleep and woke up to cops knocking on the window of the car I was in. They found me with a gun, drugs and all sorts of other illegal things. They should have taken me back to jail then prison, as I'm already on probation. They were about to, when all of a sudden the police officer asked me what I was doing with the gun and I told him. That was October 1st, 2021. I relapsed in May 2022 and have been sober ever since. I go to meetings; reach out to people; and help wherever I can; and I work a 12 step program. I honestly wish I would have started a long time ago because it's the best thing I've ever done aside from having my son. So yeah! My recovery comes first as does my program. I surrendered myself to a higher power and realized my life was unmanageable and that I desperately needed and wanted a change. Now I'm learning to love myself again and I started some projects but I'm focusing on helping other bands again but I also help other addicts. My story could be so much longer but this is as I said in a nutshell! HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. DONATE HERE: https://bit.ly/Fightdrugs PART OF THE GOOD NEWS PODCAST NETWORK. S7 Ep 340April Babcock Founder of Lost Voices of Fentanyl
April Babcock, a resolute mother, has weathered the darkest storm a parent can endure. In the cruel grasp of 2019, she was forced to bid a heartbreaking farewell to her precious son, Austen, a victim of the sinister clutches of fentanyl poisoning. Her agony, however, did not cripple her spirit; it ignited an unquenchable fire within her soul. With unwavering determination, April Babcock's anguished heart transmuted into a relentless force of change. Her unyielding resolve manifested in bold actions as she fearlessly reached out to the corridors of power, demanding accountability from government officials. Her rallying cry echoed through the hallowed halls of authority, compelling them to confront the scourge of fentanyl poisoning head-on. Out of the ashes of her personal tragedy, April forged a rallying point for kindred spirits whose lives had been forever marred by this insidious peril. In founding the Lost Voices of Fentanyl (LVOF), she discovered a tapestry of shared sorrow and collective resilience. A grassroots nonprofit organization emerged, a phoenix of purpose and unity, composed of grieving families and concerned citizens united by a singular mission: to halt the epidemic of Illicit Fentanyl Poisoning and shatter its chains of devastation. As the sun rises on September 23, 2023, April Babcock's vision will crescendo in the heart of the nation's capital, Washington D.C. There, against the backdrop of the storied monuments, she will lead the charge in the third annual national rally—an unrelenting call to arms that will echo across the land. The rallying cry will pierce through the walls of indifference, a clarion demand that can no longer be silenced or ignored. Lost Voices of Fentanyl is not a mere collective of bereaved souls; it is a beacon of action, an agent of awareness, and a sentinel of prevention. It embarks on a formidable mission to expose the channels of supply, to unmask the enigmatic machinations of the CCP, to unveil the shadowy dealings of the Mexican Cartels, and to unflinchingly confront the harbingers of death: drug dealers and traffickers, modern-day serial executioners. A relentless spotlight is cast on the heart-wrenching scenes unfolding on American soil. The public must bear witness to the tragedy unfolding in our midst, a stark reminder of the urgent need for unassailable fortifications that shield the lives of our fellow citizens. The very fabric of the American promise is under siege, and the clarion call of Lost Voices of Fentanyl is a thunderous reminder that the guardians of our nation must rise to the occasion. LVOF is more than an organization; it's a symphony of resilience. It's a resolute movement that rejects the notion of being mere bystanders to sorrow. April Babcock and her compatriots embody a spirit that refuses to be shackled by grief alone. Instead, they wield it as a formidable weapon, an instrument of change, an unbreakable resolve to transform sorrow into strength. The echo of their impassioned voices will reverberate through the annals of history, a testament to the power of parents' love and anguish, catalyzing a nation to rise from the ashes of despair and forge a future free from the clutches of fentanyl's poison. The legacy of Lost Voices of Fentanyl is etched in the hearts of those who march alongside, an indomitable force demanding a safer, brighter, and more just world. S7 Ep 339Amy Hanson My Son's Horrible Addiction Journey
I am Amy, the mother of an 18 year old son who has struggled with SUD and MH challenges. He is still alive, but the road over the past 4 years is one that will spin heads. Every system has failed our family. I understand I cannot want my son to get help more than he does and I know at this point I can let him know I love him and I can ultimately only save myself from this ugly illness. I authored an article for the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota, identifying ways in which the systems failed a kid in desperate need of help. It all unraveled when my son was DM'ing with a friend who completed suicide that night. She was 13 years old and my son turned to substances to not have to feel. Here we are 4 years later, overdose, jail time in GA, joke of probation in MN after breaking repeated laws and violating every rule of probation and treatment never ordered through the courts despite 4 letter from professionals saying this would be the only solution. Son ran from 2 wilderness programs, we have spent over 200,000 to try to get help, reports to child protection, criminal lawyer, education attorney and we are still stuck. I now intend to advocate for other families and share what I have learned. At just 26 years old, Annie became the youngest Vice President in the history of a multinational company. But as her professional success soared, her drinking career took off with equal intensity. By the time she reached 35, Annie held a powerful global C-level marketing role, overseeing a staggering 28 countries. Yet, beneath the polished surface, a hidden battle raged. Night after night, Annie found solace in consuming nearly two bottles of wine, a ritual that brought temporary relief but took an ever-increasing toll. The price of her achievements became evident, and she no longer wanted to pay it. She made a courageous and life changing decision: alcohol would no longer control her destiny. Today, she stands as a guiding light, helping countless individuals around the globe follow in her footsteps. Annie's approach transcends the limitations of traditional rehab methods. She has forged an entirely new way of perceiving the role of alcohol in our lives, creating a safe haven for those who question their drinking patterns without having to self-diagnose as alcoholics trapped in denial of an incurable disease. Through compassion and empathy, Annie understands that these emotions wield unparalleled strength over shame and blame, paving the way for lasting change. Annie offers a proven alternative to the prevailing notion of "success" in overcoming this addiction. Rejecting the belief that anything less than 100% abstinence equals failure, she guides individuals not on how to be sober, but on how to extinguish the desire to drink altogether. S7 Ep 328Diane Urban APALD Educating Parents on Fentanyl Poisoning
I founded APALD-Association of People Against Lethal Drugs as a result of losing my son Jordan Garmatter to Illicit Fentanyl on 4/6/19. My son suffered from Substance Use Disorder. He was drug free for 8 months when he developed a wisdom tooth growing in the wrong way. His face was swollen and in pain. He worked part time and only had Medicaid insurance so he couldn't get in to a dentist for two weeks out. Jordan continued to work with this extreme pain but with one week left to see the dentist he made the mistake to go get Drugs to relieve his pain. But what he got was almost 100% Fentanyl. Enough to kill 8 people in his system. My son didn't ask for Fentanyl. The drug dealer made that choice to give him that and didn't tell him it was Fentanyl. So when I got the toxicology report and found out it was Fentanyl that killed him I got very angry as I looked it up and discovered it came from China then to Mexico and across our borders. So I thought to myself, I have to do something! So I founded APALD. Since founding APALD we have had two national rallies. We are getting set for our 3rd Annual APALD Nationwide Rallies on May 6th. Our message is to bring awareness to Illicit Fentanyl which is the leading cause of death in America ages 18-45. These Fentanyl Poisonings must stop. We are losing a whole generation to this Lethal drug. Michael Fiore is the Outreach Coordinator for Voices for Awareness and Project Facing Fentanyl (Home of National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, August 21). Michael is C.E.0. & Founder of Inspire 2 Inspire providing resources to addicts in recovery nationwide. Michael was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y.C., and now resides in California. Addiction was a common theme throughout Michael's life. His parents were both addicted. He lost two grandmothers to alcoholism, a grandfather and uncle to heroin. Michael's parents were good people. They provided for and loved him but were not always present in his life, making it easy for him to begin experimenting with drugs. Michael was looking for validation from the outside world because he didn't get it at home. He became a "people pleaser" in hopes that everyone would be his friend. Michael couldn't find value in himself, lying and manipulating to get people to like him. Using drugs allowed him to suppress those feelings. Drugs were the "solution to the problem". Michael's drug use lasted 20 years. In 2009 Michael lost his father to aids. He lived in and out of jails and institutions. After 12 years of using high doses of Methadone, Michael detoxed off Methadone in 2021. Just a couple of weeks after detoxing, on Thanksgiving 2021, Michael's mother died from aids. Michael was living in treatment at the time. While in treatment, Michael started his nonprofit - Inspire 2 Inspire, working to support the recovery community. He is now a resource for addicts across the country. Mike graduated from treatment in May 2022. Twenty years of living in active addiction have given Mike a unique perspective. He has a "life education" that cannot be taught through formal education. Michael understands the value of a person's story and believes that "Our stories lie in what we overcome, not what we have done." His inspirational talks have become well-known in the recovery and fentanyl prevention communities. His high energy and positive attitude have been an asset to growing his advocacy portfolio. As Community Outreach Coordinator for Voices For Awareness Foundation and Project Facing Fentanyl, he successfully brings families affected by fentanyl poisoning together with people in recovery, building an army for his "1 Voice Project". Working in the recovery community has given him experience working with churches, nonprofits, the homeless, human trafficking victims, and domestic violence victims, and his job as a Group Facilitator. S7 Ep 322Jen Zoe Hall Horse Powered Healing
From a small town in Southeast Missouri, Jen Zoë had always been fascinated with horses. Her career with horses, however, did not begin until the age of 30 when she started taking horseback riding lessons. She quickly realized that the traditional way of training horses was archaic - using negative tools to control these majestic animals that have so much to offer humans. So after some in depth research, she found a form of natural horsemanship that put the relationship between horse and human first. It was based on the foundation of all relationships - communication, rapport, respect and trust. She dove right into the deep end to understand everything about horses. Overnight, outside of her horses, Jen's life fell like a house of cards. She discovered her ex-husband was going to prison for theft and fraud, leaving her broke and homeless with horses,Despite what common sense and the world told her to do, she decided to attend a personal development seminar. At this event, she had a one on one intervention with Tony Robbins that completely shattered her old belief systems and allowed her to step into the woman she is today. This is where she realized that what Tony does with people, she does with horses. She saw a deeper connection and knew that the two worlds had to be brought together. Over the past 19 years, Jen has tirelessly studied not just horses, but communication, human behavior, trust, relationships and personal development in order to create these life-changing experiences available at Zenerjen. The experiences Jen and her thousands of clients have experienced are not a fluke. Her brother, who was a former Naval officer and had passed away from a drug overdose, inspired her to deepen her work and serve those who had suffered from trauma, addiction and difficult relationships. Science has proven that horses not only directly reflect human emotions during an interaction, but can help to release mental and emotional traumas that hold us back from our true potential. They allow us to see ourselves in an egoless mirror for self-reflection and personal growth in all areas of our lives. Zenerjen horses, paired with the facilitation of our experts give participants unforgettable life changing experiences that foster confidence, leadership, healing and communication. Zenerjen believes that everyone deserves a positive, life-changing experience with a horse that maintains the dignity of the animal. She now leads virtual and onsite programs using The Zenerjen Method of Equine Assisted Empowerment to help transform lives through the spirit of the horse. She works with people from all walks of life and all parts of the world, creating breakthroughs with her seminars, training, and retreats. S7 Ep 316Leann Blaskowsky the Dangers of Marijuana in Pregnancy and Newborns
Leeann Blaskowsky is a board-certified neonatal nurse practitioner. In her words: since 2009 I have been living and working in Colorado, and I am faced, almost daily, with counseling families about marijuana use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. My nursing education began with an Associates degree waaay back in 1984, continuing to a Bachelors and Masters in Nursing more than twenty-five years later, finally finishing with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2020. With more than 40 years in healthcare beginning as a bedside nurse in the ICU/CCU, Emergency Department and Neonatal ICU settings, I have had the opportunity to interact with patients and families with varying opinions and practices regarding the use of marijuana. These interactions have expanded in scope and increased in number as medical marijuana and legalized recreational use arrived in Colorado. I have also cared for many patients struggling with addiction to various substances including mothers and newborns. Optimizing outcomes for our patients has, and always will, remain my driving force in practice when a clear need to continue educating providers and families in our communities arises. And now I have a personal stake... "We're really aggressive in starting [this regimen] before surgery and continuing that while they're in the hospital. We're able to control pain very well." She says that non-opioid pain-management options can result in less pain, less nausea, shorter hospital stays and reduced costs. Humeidan notes that hospital data show a consistent 50% reduction in opioid pain medication use among hospitalized surgery patients since inception. This reduction remains consistent in surgical recovery at home. S6 Ep 306Jason Yamas. I Controlled the Crystal Meth Market in the SFO Gay Community
EJason Yamas is a queer fiction and nonfiction writer making his prose debut as author of Tweakerworld: A Memoir (Unnamed Press, 2023). Meet Jason: a college educated documentary film producer, cat parent of two, and was one of San Francisco's top drug dealers. After Jason's world fell apart in LA, he moved to Berkeley for a fresh start with his kid brother. Just one problem: his long-closeted Adderall addiction had exploded into an out-of-control crystal meth binge. Within weeks, Jason plunged into the sprawling ParTy n' 'Play subculture of the Bay Area's gay community. It is a wildly decadent scene of drugs, group sex, and criminals, and yet it is also filled with surprising characters, people who continually subverted Jason's own presumptions of the stereotypical tweaker (slang) A person addicted to methamphetamine. Soon Jason became a dealer on the pretense of researching this tweaker world for a project that would carry him, like a life raft, back to the shores of a normal life. But his friendly entrepreneurial spirit and trusting disposition disarmed clients and rival dealers alike. The money began to roll in as demand increased to frightening levels. Suddenly, Jason was in control of the entire crystal meth market for San Francisco's gay community, even as he was nodding off behind the wheel of his car, or walking down the sidewalk. As friends and family worked frantically to steer him towards recovery, Jason resisted, chasing something else: a sleepless nirvana fueled by sex, drugs, and the Tweakerworld. With painful honesty, Jason Yamas has crafted a landmark narrative that is not just a personal account of addiction, but a portrait of a vulnerable, largely undocumented community of people who, for many reasons, have been marginalized to the point of invisibility. Prior to his foray into literature, he produced documentary and narrative films such as Jonathan Caouette's Walk Away Renee (SundanceNow) and Stephen Winter's Jason & Shirley (Criterion). He produced charity arts and music projects in Detroit with the late great songwriter Allee Willis ("September", The Friends Theme, The Color Purple.) His self-directed and produced feature Not Me, Murphy premiered at the MIX NYC Film Festival. He's currently writing his first novel and pursuing acting training at the Sanford Meisner Center. He holds a BFA from NYU, Tisch School of the Arts in Drama and has performed in and directed in the experimental downtown New York theatre scene. With the publication of Tweakerworld, he intends to shine a bright light on the worsening epidemic of crystal meth in the LGBTQ+ community. S6 Ep 302Opioid Stories of Loss and Recovery Kay and Murray Sumner
Kay Sumner is an Emmy Nominated Producer and Film Director. She has extensive production experience, including three Emmy nominations and two People's Choice awards as the Co-Creator and Producer for The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. She and her husband, Murray Sumner, established the non-profit foundation, Not One More Time in 2018 for the purposes of creating, packaging, and disseminating film, print, and media educational content. The motivation for its creation was due to the unfortunate loss of their 43 yr. old son to a drug overdose. They struggled to understand how this could have happened and how it could have been prevented. Filmmakers by profession, they chose to channel their grief and turn their talents into creating a documentary that would expose the destructive path that opioids can cause in the lives of everyday normal people. The result is a critically acclaimed 54 min. documentary film entitled "SURVIVORS'. It is the assembled stories of the journey to freedom from addiction. The documentary SURVIVORS (2021): UNTOLD STORIES IN AMERICA'S OPIOID CRISIS is Kay's directorial debut. It details real stories of opioid recoveries and losses and has won multiple best feature documentary awards.

S6 Ep 301Jackie Siegel Losing a Daughter to Addiction Made My World Fall Apart
Jackie Siegel is best known for her role in the award-winning documentary feature, Queen of Versailles (Magnolia Pictures), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. A little back story: Jackie earned the "Queen" moniker when a decade ago, she and husband, David Siegel, began an extravagant project to build the largest private residence in the U.S.—named Versailles—and the ambitious construction ground to a halt as the '08 recession dented their fortune. The rise and fall of their grand ambitions were captured in the critically acclaimed 2012 documentary based on their plans for the 90,000-square-foot behemoth near Orlando, FL. In 2016, the Siegel's world changed forever when their then 18-year-daughter, Victoria, died of a drug overdose. This tragedy has trajected them into a new life purpose: to save lives through drug prevention programs. As a result, the Siegels have created a foundation in Victoria's memory called Victoria's Voice. Its purpose is to bring drug prevention education into the schools, offer healthy social media opportunities for young people, and assist first responders in receiving and administering Narcan (Naloxone) to an overdose victim, which has proven to save lives. When Victoria was discovered, she still had a heartbeat. It's possible she could have been saved if the first responders had been equipped with Narcan. In 2019, Siegel released a profoundly personal book, "Victoria's Voice," compiled from the pages of her late daughter's journal. The Siegels decided to leave it just as Victoria had left it with drawings, poems, heartfelt feelings of loneliness and sadness. It is a very emotionally-charged read that all need to take heed of. It is a glimpse into the heart of a hurting teen that reveals to parents not uncommon struggles of their children. "If only one life can be saved through our efforts," says Mrs. Siegel, "it will have been worth all of the time, effort, and money." Later that year, Siegel also released The Princess of Versailles documentary on the fourth anniversary of Victoria's passing. The documentary aimed to bring awareness of America's opioid crisis to another level. In 2020, Siegel published a children's book "Oliver Uncollared" with her twin teen daughters to help kids cope with loss and grief. Mrs. Siegel continues to schedule a full calendar as a model, actress, and philanthropist, but since Victoria's loss, more priority is now given to Victoria's Voice Foundation as she and her husband tirelessly work to bring local communities, state legislatures and even the federal government in agreement to do more about the opioid epidemic and its often tragic results. The former Mrs. Florida America is also actively involved in the national Mrs. America organization and now many of the beauty queens have become outspoken advocates of Victoria's Voice and saving lives. Most recently, Siegel welcomed cameras back into her life and the Versailles mansion with the Discovery+ original series, Queen of Versailles Reigns Again, released in March 2022.
