S6 Ep 6Performing Under Pressure - With Dr Steve Bull
Happy Holidays everyone! To keep you company between Christmas and New Year, Alexa is joined by an audience favourite (who also happens to be her Dad) performance psychologist Dr Steve Bull, to answer listener questions about confidence, pressure, and navigate the realities of the acting industry. Blending psychological insight with lived experience, this discussion offers practical tools and grounded reassurance for actors navigating challenges, self-doubt, and high expectations. Together, they explore what actors should be focussing on beyond industry noise, career pressure and unhelpful expectations. S6 Ep 5Patrick O'Kane - The Power Of Support
The 98% is back for another new episode already! Sometimes you are contacted about a prospective guest where the subject matter is too perfect for the platform to not jump on the mic. This is one of those guests. Today Alexa is joined by acclaimed Irish actor Patrick O'Kane, who you may recognise from iconic stage roles or appearances in TV series such as Doctor Who and Game of Thrones. From tearing up his university application for a Law degree, to treading the boards in the UK's most prestigious theatres - Patrick delves into parts of his actor journey and insight from 35 years in the biz. Patrick also shares, for the first time, the personal circumstances of illness that led him to getting support from and eventually becoming a member and trustee of Actors' Trust - a charity that has been supporting actors and stage management since 1882 (formerly known as The Actors' Benevolent Fund). We all know that the entertainment industry can be a collaborative, creative and exciting one, but it can, at times, be isolating and uncertain. S6 Ep 3"AI Actress Tilly Norwood" - Hazard Or Hype?
ESo, an AI actress is here to take all of our jobs and change the face of the acting industry forever… Or is it? In this deep-dive episode Alexa is joined by actor and screenwriter Rebecca Osias - who also isn't one to shy away from difficult industry conversations. Together they discuss the concerns and questions around "Tilly Norwood", why there is no space for generative AI in creative spaces, the responses from industry organisations - and so much more. Including a look at the website of the "100% AI generated production company" behind this code, why the original article about agent interest may not be exactly what it seems, and how public funding comes into all of it... S6 Ep 2Contracts, Clauses & Caution - Agent Webinar
Essential listening for any actor, parent of child actor, or anyone else working with a talent agent... This episode is a recording of a recent live webinar where Alexa was joined by experienced agent Liz Pratt of Nelson Management. Liz has been teaching herself legislation and brushing up on her knowledge regarding actors rights, and she's here to share that knowledge with you. This informative discussion looks into the often-overlooked small print of the actor/agent relationship: contracts, terms & conditions, unlawful behaviour, red flags, and more. This episode offers clear, empowering advice from both sides of the table - an agent who understands actors' rights, and an actor working to empower others through transparency and experience. Listen more agent advice from Liz in Series 5 Episode 38 of The 98%. If you suspect your agent may not be acting in your best interest, I encourage you to listen to the episode released previously to this one, and follow the steps and guidance shared there. S6 Ep 1'Lucy Harrison Casting': A Cautionary Tale
EThe most complex episode of The 98% yet…an armchair investigation into 'Lucy Harrison Casting' - a talent agency accused of withheld pay, suspicious business practices, and questionable identities. With an informed eye, sharpened by her involvement in exposing the Bodhi Talent scandal in 2024, Alexa presents a deep-dive into concerns regarding this agency, based on first-hand accounts and publicly available records. This episode explores how an unregulated industry leaves actors vulnerable, and why more accountability, protection, and proactive safeguarding is urgently needed. This is not an attack on anyone - it's a resource that all can actors can learn from. Owed money from LHC? Click Here for next steps. This is a long episode, for good reason. S5 Ep 41"We aren't chasing the thing anymore. We ARE the thing."
EA special moment that feels full circle, where everything is the same but different at the same time. For the first time in 6 years (!!) Alexa and Katie are in the same room recording an episode of The 98%. After years of remote recording and living in different countries, they're back in Katie's living room, trying to wrangle a cat, and talking honestly about #actorslife that is now more like #creativelife. Only this time, gone is the desperation and frustration, and in its place is acceptance of the reality of the game, and efforts to make their part in it as happy and fulfilled as possible. Redefining what success is, unlearning unhelpful industry bullsh*t, seeing the business for what it is, and finding joy in the process rather than the outcome. In this episode, Alexa and Katie reflect on how their perspectives have shifted over the years - from chasing external validation to embracing creative autonomy, from feeling stuck in an unfair system to actively working to change it. They discuss the evolution of The 98% into a platform not just for support and solidarity, but for advocacy and action, tackling industry malpractice and amplifying voices that need to be heard. Tune in for laughter, honesty, and a much-needed reminder that success isn't a finish line - it's what you make of the journey. S5 Ep 39S5E39 - Finale Part 1 - Finding Joy In Your Journey
EEvery guest on The 98% who has chosen to move on from the performing industry didn't do it because they fell out of love with the art of acting, it was because they didn't want to continue with the industry itself. So for those of us who choose to stay in it, how can we make it an enjoyable place to be? In this episode Alexa shares her thoughts and musings over recent months having a "front row seat to the sh*tshow" and why it is so important to redefine what success means to you in this business. Strap in for some classic 98% brutal honesty. The rose tinted glasses are off, because you don't need glasses when you can see things clearly! S5 Ep 37S5E37 - Representation Special Part 1: Self Representation
EThere's been a lot of worrying discussion around agents recently, so before this series ends The 98% wanted to finish on an uplifting note - platforming conversations around representation that instill confidence and trust in actors. This is part one of a two-part representation special! Due to recent exposé's unconvering malpractice from agents, many have found themselves now without one. While this can feel very daunting, it's a disservice of our industry to make actors feel like they are doomed without an agent. Self representation can be an empowering journey and give actors some control over their career by putting them in the drivers seat. This episode's guest, Phillip Laing, has spent time in this industry represented by agents, and representing himself. He shares the pros, cons, and process of self representation drawing on his own experiences, thoughts and feelings. "Progress is progress. If I get an agent again, I'll be happy. And if I don't, I'll be ok." . Some things mentioned in the episode... Alexa's new venture! S5 Ep 36S5E36 - The Deceit and Corruption of Fake Self Tapes
Just when you thought this business couldn't get any tougher, Deadline exposes another scandal that has rocked the industry and sent shockwaves through the creatvies involved in the audition process. Agents sending fake self tape requests to actors?! If this is something you'd never even contemplated before, you wouldn't be the only one. But sadly these are not just isolated incidents... Including comments from The CDA and Equity's General Secretary, testimonies from actors who have been affected, and more, join me on a deep dive into the recently exposed scandal of agents sending fake self tape requests to clients. The what's, how's, why's... This isn't just about fake auditions, it's about deceit, emotional manipulation, selfish gain and moral corruption in an industry with such a powerful hierarchy, that this behaviour has been able to thrive for years. PSA: Jamie Fisher / "Archie Purnell" Statement
bonus"Archie Purnell" JAMIE FISHER (also using the name 'Richard'), rogue talent agent, is back with a new name, new studio name ('Wigan TV & Film Acting School'), but the same old tricks. To get ahead of accusations he is spreading rumours and false claims. Knowing all I know, I cannot sit back and let more people be scammed. "Drawing from documented sources and firsthand accounts of those impacted, I am making this public statement, as a vital disclosure for anyone who may come into contact with, now or in the future, Jamie Fisher aka Jamie Thomas Fisher aka AP James aka Archie Purnell." S5 Ep 35S5E35 - "The Best Journalists Are Trustworthy"
EThis episode is 1 hour 4 mins long. If your podcast app is only playing the first 45 mins, there is a technical issue that is currently being looked at! Please check back here for the full episode coming asap! Last year The 98% was contacted by Jake Kanter, a journalist for Deadline, after the podcast featured stories of those who experienced abuse and misconduct at UK drama schools. Thus began a relationship that has resulted in multiple exsposé articles unearthing misconduct in the industry after people who had reports to make had nowhere left to go, apart from The 98%, to share what had happened to them. So why did Alexa, and many others, feel like a journalist was the only option in having their voice heard? How does writing an exposé work? What are some behind-the-scenes looks at the uncovering of these recent topics? And why does the idea that those who report are making falsehoods not hold up in these cases? Listen to find out... S5 Ep 34S5E34 - "My greatest performance was pretending everything was ok"
EMental health has always been a throughline for episodes of The 98% and so the podcast is proud to host Adam Bambrough in this episode, founder and CEO of Wellbeing in the Arts. After leaving the acting profession due to struggles with his own mental wellbeing, Adam planned to write a book revealing the scope of actors and creatives with mental health struggles. He soon realized that there was no stand alone mental health support in the entertainment industry, so no wonder mental health struggles were affecting so many creatives. And so..he made one himself. Wellbeing in the Arts works towards their vision of an industry in which every individual, organisation and production has access to mental health and wellbeing support and where awareness and understanding of mental health issues is vastly improved, along with the root causes of poor mental health in the workplace being addressed. Adam shares his journey as an actor, leaving the professions, neurodivergence, and more. This is an honest, transparent and much needed conversation about creatives and how this industry can exacerbate struggles, and what needs to be done to help. CN: This episode contains discussion around mental illness This brilliant organization has helped Alexa herself have access to 6 weeks of counselling for an incredibly accessible price considering the promptness and high quality of the service. S5 Ep 33S5E33 - "'All I can do is act' is absolute bull"
EAfter a lifetime dedicated to the "I can do nothing but act" frame of mind, everything changed aged 39 for guest Lee Mengo. Thinking about his future and his prospects, Lee realized that acting wasn't giving him what he needed in life. Financially, mentally, spiritually, egotistically...but coming to terms with that was a long hard road. When he finally made the decision to step away, start his journey of sobriety, and found a job that he loved teaching young actors…his 20 years of hard work came back around and he ended up booking bucket list acting jobs! As a teacher, Lee practices the values of kindness and positivity. He shares with his students the importance of finding validation and authenticity within themselves and how actor training has no room for hostility or high pressure. S5 Ep 32S5E32 - Bodhi Scandal, unveiled by The 98%
After a group of actors reported their concerns about their former agent regarding fake self tapes, withheld pay, skimming money, lying about cancer, and more, to no avail...they came to Alexa at The 98% for advice on next steps. With seemingly nowhere else to turn, Alexa passed the information on to Deadline journalist Jake Kanter, encouraging him to help expose these dodgy dealings...For the sake of these actors, the others on the agencies book, and the inudstry as a whole. Thankfully, he did. And thus began #BodhiGate. Hundreds of emails, texts, screenshots, messages, sent and recieved...police reports, zoom meetings, seven google docs and a 30 page-and-counting armchair investigation into what Alexa describes as a "con of the highest tier." Not all can be revealed...yet. But this episode exists as a comprehensive collation of what is detailed in the articles, next steps for those affected, and insight into what is hopefully a catalyst for real industry change. S5 Ep 31S5E31 - "Hold On Tightly, Let Go Lightly"
EToday's guest, Sally Abbott, has worked in the arts for 35 years. Starting in community arts and working her way up to writing for some of British televisions biggest shows, Sally has so much wisdom and insight to share. In this episode you'll hear why Sally finally feels like she's who she's meant to be at aged 55, how she has found confidence and navigated a diagnosis for ADHD, and what her journey in the industry has looked like. Actors listening will hear why writers can't get you a job (even if a character is literally based on you!), what makes a good self tape for writers watching their work, why 'rejection' is not as personal as we feel, what the process of writing for TV looks like...and why a Stranger Things star was cut from a Casualty episode! S5 Ep 29S5E29 - "Your world is subjective. And you can't change it."
"This year I will book my first TV credit" "I will sign with an agent" "I will star in a film" Sound familiar? These are all outcome goals, and very common amongst actors who are so determined to achieve that certain thing they think will make them more valid, especially in an industry that tends to only focus on the outcomes. But outcome foccussed goals can be detrimental, especially as actors when the outcome doesn't necessarily correlate to the process. What are process goals and why are they more important to focus on than outcome goals? This episode will explain all, and leave you feeling positive and inspired to make realistic and attainable goals and New Year's Resolutions for 2024 and beyond. Today The 98% welcomes back one of the most listened to guests of the podcast, Dr Steve Bull! Steve is a keynote speaker, author and 'high performance' consultant. S5 Ep 27S5E27 - "Happy actors do better work"
EIt's the 100th episode of The 98%! And what could be more on brand than a deep dive on the one thing that actors in the 98% have in common...having to have a non-acting job. Guest Robyn Holdaway returns to the podcast after publishing a brilliant article on The 98%'s blog entitled "How To Pick The Right Non Acting Job For You". They break down every part of the process of having to find a paythebills job with the main idea being finding a job that doesn't rot your soul...because, as Robyn so brilliantly puts it, "you will be a better actor if you don't hate yourself and your work, because the more desperate you become for an acting job...the worse you're going to become." It's very normal to believe that the "right" job to have alongside your acting career is one that makes you as flexible and available for acting as possible, but that shouldn't be the only criteria. Considering 98% of actors don't earn their main source of income from acting, the reality is you are more than likely going to be paying your tax bill each year from work outside of the industry. So finding a job that is right for YOU, which can differ person to person, is of paramount importance. As is keeping a healthy state of mind and finding joy in your day to day life. How you pay your bills is a huge part of that, and in turn makes you a healthier and better person to enjoy the acting work when it does come. So how do you find a job like this? And what are the options? Listen now to find out! S5 Ep 26S5E26 - Strike Update, A No Vote?
While people are saying the SAG-AFTRA vote is over, technically it's just suspended. The deal offered by the AMPTP and agreed upon by the actors union still needs to be voted on by members of SAG-AFTRA...and some are voting no, including previous podcast guest and strike captain Kylie Sparks, who featured in our special strike episode in July. Hear Kylie break down some of the deal points that bring concern for the "journeyman actor" (like those in the 98%!), and why they believe the union has been strong-armed into accepting a deal instead of pushing for rights that, if ignored, could cause irreprobable damage to our industry. This episode is an audio recording of an instagram live, so if you'd prefer to watch this discussion head over to @the98percentpod to view. EIt's the 98th episode of The 98%! And rules are being broken!! For the first time, The 98% is hosting someone from the other side...a 2 percenter!! Many will remember today's guest Tony Gardner as the whacky and wonderful Brian from My Parents Are Aliens and despite going on to have a brilliant long standing career in the arts, Tony is a listener of The 98% and big supporter of what the platform is all about. So, after he tweeted about the podcast last year, Alexa and Katie could not pass up the oppurtunity to have him on (and rejoice in their millenial glee)! S5 Ep 21S5E21 - "Our beliefs affect our world"
ESomething a bit different for The 98% on this episode - with a practical aspect! Guest Dana Middleton is an Alignment and Tapping Coach who helps creative peiple raise their vibrations and unlock their most actualized lives. She teaches her Affirmation Tapping Formula to create laser focus while releasing common blocks and patterns of sabotage that hold creatives back. What is tapping? Well; disciplines that rely on a body-mind connections have evidence showing that they can relieve stress, depression, anxiety and other psychological disorders. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) tapping falls into this category. Tapping draws on the ancient Chinese practice of accupuncture, which teaches that the body's energy travels along specific pathways. Certain points on these pathwaysare stimulated to improve the flow of energy. Scientists believe that it works because it stimulates the central nervous system and causes the body to release helpful chemicals. In this episode you'll hear Alexa and Dana discuss what EFT tapping is and why it is importnant and powerful, advice for actors to raise their vibrations and change their mindset to 'move from stuck to shining', and more! Dana even takes listeners along a mini tapping session for actors! Check out our instagram page for a diagram of the tapping points so you can tap-along! S5 Ep 19S5E19 - "People wanted to believe that West End Producer was somebody really important"
EIn 2010 a new theatre producer hit the twitter scene. But this wasn't like any other producer, this was a persona and he was talking the talk. After swiftly gaining popularity for his tongue-in-cheek relatable showbiz musings, it was time for 'West End Producer' to walk the walk. Which he did..donning a mask, sticking a pillow down his trousers and adopting a voice that is now so synonymous with the character he portrayed. For 14 years the real identity of 'WEP' has been a secret...until now. After writing two books, being a columnist for The Stage, appearing at countless press nights and industry events and amassing a cult following, it was time for the man behind the mask to be revealed. With rumours swirling and some steadfastly believing it was really a producer akin to Sir Cameron Mackintosh, actors across the country (including Alexa and Katie) were delighted to discover that the genius behind this character was, in fact, a "jobbing actor" in the 98%. Christian Edwards started posing as West End Producer all those years ago partly out of frustration at the industry and all it entails for actors, and partly as a need for a creative outlet he was in control of. He had no idea when he sent that first tweet that he'd gain 60,000 followers, be a voice of guidance for many, have a sell out show at the Edinburgh Fringe, become an author, and be the centre of London's best kept theatre secret for over a decade. In today's episode you'll hear from West End Producer himself, as well as Christian who shares the times he was almost at breaking point, the imposter syndrome he faced as WEP, close calls of people finding out, why he is unmasking now and more classic 98% actor stories than you can imagine (including how going from the red carpet as WEP to a promo work shift the next morning really puts a new spin on #actorslife!) S5 Ep 18S5E18 - "I want to quiet the shame and raise the inner artist's self"
EA few months ago The Cut published an article 3 years in the making. Journalist Sara Jin Li spoke to 26 ex-students of acting studio Lonsdale Smith & Company, ran by "dogmatic leader slash guru" Michèle Lonsdale-Smith; who has been running acting classes in studios acros North America, and now Europe, for 20+ years. Actors described, in detail, cult-like abuse, mistreatment and bullying exhibited under the guise of "doing the work". Since the release of the article, huge comparisons have been made online between what these actors have described, and the workings of dangerous cults..from survivors of cults themselves. In today's episode one of those ex-students, Brooke, joins us to share her experience and the ways she is using it to retrain as an art therapist with the aim to provide person centered, trauma informed safe spaces for artists. Brooke shares her inspiring story and strength, harrowing experience, important thoughts around how actors are viewed by the profession and themselves, why person-centered training is key, and why actors shouldn't be performing monkey's jumping through hoops for those percived to be 'important' in this industry. An important listen for all. Content Warning - this episode contains discussion around mistreatment and verbal abuse Follow Brooke on instagram @ababblingbooke and her traum-informed safe space for artists @rise.artists If you'd like to find out more about the acting studio, and teacher, discussed in this episode you can read the article in The Cut here: https://www.thecut.com/article/michele-lonsdale-smith-acting-class-students.html You can also listen to a two-part episode from podcast A Little Bit Culty who chat to three ex-students, including Brooke https://open.spotify.com/episode/1EDnectgYfgtg78i6ISLpc?si=_p4AGFlWQUOJEnDaZ9_P2w . S5 Ep 17S5E17 - "Some of the most 'successful' actors I know are 'unknown'"
EFor so long conservatoire drama schools have been the only way to get invaluable training to set you up for the industry...but not anymore. IAmPro is just one of the alternative training offerings out there for actors and creatives who want to work in the entertainment industry. IAmPro trains talent digitally and gets them discovered, collaborating and networking, and offers personalised end-to-end learning which prepares people for the future creative industry. Their mission is to democratise the historically archaic systems which have driven multi-layers of inequality within our industry. Today's guest is Ben Brooks, co founder and director of production at IAmPro. Ben himself started off in-front of the camera as an actor and then studied Musical Theatre before deciding to work behind the camera in television production, which he has done for the last 15 years. He is also and agent and director of acting agency iAP Talent Group. Ben tells us about his journey from being an actor as a youngster to working behind the camera, and eventually co-founding an alternative to the standard actor training to make it more accessible for all creatives to explore multiple avenues within the entertainment business. We chat about nepotism within the industry (and his own experience of having a famous actress as a sister!), going from working in front of the camera to behind the camera in production, how and why IAmPro started, the perception of success, thoughts on casting director workshops, as well as brilliant advice from an agent's point of view as director of an actor agency! S5 Ep 16S5E16 - SAG-AFTRA On Strike
E"It's all corporate greed" July 2023 marks an historic time for the entertainment industry. For the first time in decades the actor union in the United States (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild Of America (WGA) have joined forces to strike after the expiration of their contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and the AMPTP's refusal to engage in negotiations for fair pay, safe working conditions, protection against AI and other basic rights for performers, writers and creatives. Whether you are a member of SAG-AFTRA or not, this strike affects and represents us all. Knowledge is power and we are all in this together, so tune in to this episode to arm yourself with insight and fuel your solidarity. Why are the strikes happening? What caused them? How does SAG-AFTRA work as a union? How are they different to Equity and other sister unions? How can you support the strike and how does it affect you? What are some experiences of actors that are happening right now in terms of why we need this strike? Find out all of this and more from this episode's two brilliant guests; Kylie Sparks (they/them) an actor, writer, singer, comedian and strike leader on the ground at the picket line and Dominic Burgess (he/him) a British actor who has been living and working in LA since 2007. While The 98% mostly discusses everything about the real #actorslife aside from the actual art of acting…this episode is a slight gear change as Alexa talks to renowned acting teacher Terry Knickerbocker. In this down to earth, honest chat you can hear discussion on the importance of laying the foundations for working on your craft, why your goals should be more than just "be a working actor", what to look out for when finding a good coach, the importance of self care and finding a nurturing teacher, how to handle the business and stay resilient, self taping advice…and the reasons why Terry loves to work with Daniel Craig! Terry has been teaching new actors as well as coaching experienced actors for decades, and despite working with some of the most famous actors in the world - he has never got caught up in the smoke and mirrors of the profession and remains steadfast in offering training for actors to realize their full potential at his acting studio in New York; Terry Knickerbocker Studio. This is a hugely relatable episode and one to inspire those who may need a reminder, in this difficult and draining industry, of why we are in it in the first place. S5 Ep 13S5E13 - "I love acting. But I hated being an actor."
E*Content Note/Trigger Warning: This episode contains conversation around mental illness and eating disorders. Please take care while listening.* Grab a cuppa and settle in for a feature film length episode! We feel so privileged to platform stories on The 98% that are not usually heard in #actorslife circles, and today's episode is a really special one of that nature. Alexa and guest Em Holdaway could have chatted for hours thanks to Em's incredible honesty and transparency about her journey, which makes for inspiring listening. Listen to hear how Em went from child actor and student at the Brit school with high hopes and sights set on being a musical theatre performer and actor, to doing what was completely unimaginable to her and leaving the industry altogether - gaining an unexpected joy for life and general happiness almost over night. Em tells us about her mental health journey including a Type I Bipolar diagnosis, university choices, finding (and actually liking) a remote job, breaking up with acting, unpicking who you are if not through an actor lens, relationship jealousies when your spouse is "successful", moving away from London, experiencing burn out..and so much more! This is an eye opening and important episode for ANY actor to hear, at any point in their actor journey. We can all learn a lot from Em, her experience and words of wisdom. Most listeners probably aren't thinking about leaving the industry or stopping acting, but there are so many wise words in this episode that every actor needs to hear. The importance of hobbies and spending your time doing things that are separate from your careers, knowing that it will be ok if you do choose to go down another path, separating who you are from your job. For better peace of mind, this is not an episode to miss. S5 Ep 12S5E12 - "The success is in clicking send, not if they get back to you"
EGet ready for an energised, uplifting and empowering episode with today's guest Brian Patacca! Brian helps actors get what they want without all the struggle. Known as "The Representation Whisperer" for helping over 500 actors find representation through his popular online courses and entertaining podcast, Brian teaches actors how to market themselves authentically and use gratitude to open doors. Brian believes whole heartedly in actors, performers and creatives following their purpose, instead of playing by a tired set of industry rules. In focussing on what they have to offer instead of what they feel they need to do and say, actors can skip the drama, generate momentum, and build excitement around who they are and what they love to do the most. This is a fabulous listen for all actors and an important reminder of how much we have to offer outside of just our credits and experience. S5 Ep 11S5E11 - "Actors need to be with teachers who can hold a safe space"
EFrom wanting to be an actor but being told she was "ruining it for everyone else" with her struggle to learn lines to building a retreat for actors to make a safe learning space, today's guest Steph Upsall has one mission: to revolutionize how we train ourselves as actors and making sure we are being our best selves as a human first and an actor second. Steph's company "Both Feet" offers actor training retreats that are the only training of its kind in the world. Designed to help build humans, not just characters, Steph uses exercises based on Meisner's teachings alongside her Neuro Linguistic Programming and mBIT (where neuroscience backs up ancient wisdoms) practice to unlock an actors potential and give them practical tools to translate to any acting job. Instead of the tired, dangerous ethos of "breaking actors down", Both Feet challenges actors in a safe, supportive environment where you can take risks but learn to trust yourself.
