Former Teen Vogue editor and Project Runway judge Elaine Welteroth met with eight different doctors when she was pregnant with her first child. She knew Black women were three to four times more likely to die during and after childbirth, and she wanted to feel safe with her doctors. But that never happened. That’s why she chose to use a midwife, a birthing option that could play a pivotal role in solving America’s maternal health crisis.
