In this episode we talk about the ATP Nitto Finals as it ends its time in London, now to be held in Turin starting 2021. Danill Medvedev was the winner, not losing any matches this time in contrast with last season, when he lost every single one. On his way, he beat Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Dominic Thiem, world's number 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Thiem also beat both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal en route to the final. His matches against the world's top 2 players and GOAT candidates were arguably the best ones of the tournament. The future of these players is interesting: where we would normally have gotten a Djokovic vs Nadal final, we got a Medvedev vs Thiem, as both of them beat the Big 3 members in the semis. What will happen in the next slams? Do these results mean something or are they just hiccoughs? Plus, we have a great announcement in this episode! Gill Gross from Monday Match Analysis joins Vansh and Andre for a discussion on the Alexander Zverev's accusation of domestic violence by ex girlfriend Olya Sharypova. We talked about his cavalier attitude and statements regarding the allegations, the awkward silence from the tennis biggest organizations (mainly the ATP) and our own views on the subject. We also spent some time talking a bit about the actual tennis played during the Paris Masters 1000, last tournament of the year before the ATP Finals. Vansh and I discuss Vienna, where Djokovic lost shockingly to Sonego, a Lucky Loser, but cliched year end number 1 for the sixth time in the ATP rankings. And then Rublev got another title in his incredible 2020 season, beating Djokovic's conqueror in the final. On other news, Jonathan Millman finally won his first ATP title in the 250 level tournament in Nur-Sultan. Just a couple days after Vansh tweeted that he was a a sad list of best players that never won a title. Good on him that he managed to move to the winners circle!And then, Paris, where Nadal will play and has a chance (a big chance) of adding a third indoor hard court title to his name. In men's tennis, an ATP Masters 1000 is worth 1000 points in rankings. There are 9 of those as opposed to 4 Grand Slams. By all means, they have overall half the value of Grand Slams, at least. Considering they account for a total of 9000 points, whereas the Slams are at 8000, these tournaments hold a very important place in the calendar, as they can define who becomes number 1 at the end of the season. And our Big 4 cares about them: only 43 titles went to non Big 4 players since 2003. And Djokovic just tied Nadal's record of 35 total, and broke his own by completing the Double Career Golden Masters, a truly novel and unique feat that is unlikely to be reproduced in many years.Why then, so many disregard this category in relation to the Grand Slams? Why do we place so much more importance to the majors while almost not caring about any other thing when comparing records? The draw at the 2020 US Open is pretty wide open in the women's side: 6 of the top 10 out, Serena Williams not playing her best, and Karolina Pliskova yet to impress at the Grand Slam level. But this is no problem at the women's field, to be fully honest. Women's tennis is springing with new talents, the depth of female tennis right now is encouraging and really exciting. If we cannot tell with much certainty who will be the winner, it is not because the top players aren't there, but because there are too many good contenders. Steffi Graf remains the only player ever, male or female, to have won the Golden Slam, which is winning all 4 Grand Slams and the Olympic Gold medal in the same season. Andy Murray carried the weight of a nation for most of his career. His accomplishments in an era of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer are absolutely mind blowing. Some say: there's the Big 3, then Murray, then everybody else. But he failed several times before getting there. Before he could win Wimbledon, he had to lose it. A very painful loss to Roger Federer in 2012, after being a set up then losing in 4 sets.And then, redemption: a rematch came quicker then anyone anticipated, on the grounds of SW19 again, where Murray had a chance to redeem himself in front of his home crowd and give them something to appease their longing. With the US Open coming soon, or at least with the promise of it, we have to wonder as tennis fans who are the favourites to win. Several issues make this call more complicated then ever, because of the pandemic: will the lack of fans in the stands affect the players? Will it be negatively or positively?
