The Order of Great Compline for the Fourth Friday of the Great Fast.While in the Greek recensions (Greek, Melkite, Romanian, etc), it has become the custom to do Small Compline with a section of the Akathist Hymn on the first four Fridays of the Fast, the older practice still maintained by the Slavic Churches (Ukrainian, Ruthenian, Belarusian, Russian, etc) is to continue with Great Compline on Friday evening as it is a fasting day, albeit in a more abridged manner with less singing. We normally take the Canon of the Departed in the tone of the week for the odes of the day (6,7,8&9) and of the saint of the day for Saturday for the remaining odes, since the saint's commemoration is omitted at Orthros. Normally starting at the Second Week, we take at Great Compline the Canon of one of the saints of the day for the period of Holy and Bright Weeks. However, during the 4th Week, Wednesday and Friday, being normal days to commemorate the Cross, get enhanced to a "double" commemoration of the Cross, and the saint of these two days has their canon read at Compline. The Order of Festal Matins & Lauds in their role as the second part of the All-Night Vigil of the Great Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. While in some places it has become the rule to always move Matins to the morning, which on the face of it makes perfect logical sense, for festal vigils this is usually done immediately appended to the evening service, normally Great Vespers but on this Fasting Feast Great Compline. Similarly there is no Divine Liturgy permitted on this day other than that which is attached to Great Vespers in the evening of the Feast itself, however this is in many places ignored as a matter of rote liturgical abuse.Please consider supporting me in creating this podcast. The Order of Great Compline in its role as the first part of the All-Night Vigil of the Great Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. While in certain Greek-leaning jurisdictions, although only proper to the Greek Orthodox Church itself due to the popularity of the secular celebration of Greek Independence, a modification was made to the liturgical schedule to make this day as if outside of the Great Fast, in all Churches other than the Greek Orthodox, and certainly and especially the Slavic Churches with no modern Greek influence the traditional order should be maintained: namely that the Vigil for this Feast does not consist of Great Vespers and Matins but, akin to the Fasting Feasts of Christmas and Theophany Eves, it is Great Compline & Matins. Similarly there is no Divine Liturgy permitted on this day other than that which is attached to Great Vespers in the evening of the Feast itself, however this is in many places ignored as a matter of rote liturgical abuse.Normally the 4th Monday's Great Compline would always contain the canon of the saint of the day on the Feast of Feasts, Pascha, this year April 20th: Our Venerable Father Theodore Trichinas, but this year due to the Annunciation the commemoration is omitted.Please consider supporting me in creating this podcast.
