Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 31
Hello! And welcome to the 31st episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. There is no hysteria in 1965's Hysteria. There is, however, a plot so convoluted that even its perpetrators don't understand what's going on.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 30
Hello! And welcome to the 30th episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. Here is a terrible, terrible plan: take a story written in 1887 and filled with Victorian racist tropes, and then make it into a film 80 years and include all of those racist tropes. That's what happens with 1965's She.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 29
Hello! And welcome to the 29th episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. We don't want to raise expectations, but 1965's Fanatic is a bit great. And, despite the title, there's actually a fanatic in it! Shock, horror! Join as as we flail about classy direction, witty dialogue, and the astonishing life of Tallulah Bankhead.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 28
Hello! And welcome to the 28th episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. 1964's The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb is the sort of movie that exists to remind you of how precious your time is, and how you should use it to watch other movies. Any other movies.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 27
EHello! And welcome to the 27th episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. For 1964's The Gorgon, we're joined by the brilliant John Rogers, creator of Leverage and The Librarians. (If you've no interest in Hammer, but love The Librarians, I rec the first five minutes of the podcast.) Prepare for a deep dive into the messy awesomenes of this film, a healthy amount of perfectly rational love for Peter Cushing, and ardent appreciation of how much Barbara Shelley can do with such thinly wirtten characters.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 26
Hello! And welcome to the 26th episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. Ah, The Evil of Frankenstein. A Frankenstein movie. From Hammer. With Peter Cushing. What could go wrong? Or, a question with a shorter answer, what went right with this movie? Tis a sad month at the Hammer House of Podcast as we discuss the most painfully underwhelming of the Frankenstein series.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 25
Hello! And welcome to the 25th episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. In Nightmare, there is, in fact, a nightmare. Hurrah! It's quite a good one too, and by good, I mean scary. Mostly though we're in the real world and enjoying a classy black and white thriller. About driving people mad. As you do.
Hammer House of Podcast - 2019 Christmas Special Commentary
bonusHello! And welcome to the Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. It's Hammer House of Podcast's second Christmas Special! We're back with another commentary, this time for the second Dalek movie. Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 24
Hello! And welcome to the 24th episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. In 1964's Paranoiac, Oliver Reed returns for Jimmy Sangster's final shot at a moody suspense thriller. It has a lot to say about the advantages of being an aunt's favourite nephew. Not least of all the fact that she'll make a really scary mask and pretend to be your dead brother. But she's helping (no, really, she's actually trying to help.) And if the plot doesn't al quite hang together, Oliver Reed does a marvellous job of distracting you from it with his acting skills.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 23
Hello! And welcome to the fifth episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. A Hammer horror vampire film with neither Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee? Is that allowed? Apparently so. Is it any good? Yes, yes it is. If only for the pretty dresses and masked ball. And the absinthe. It's probably absinthe. It's green anyway.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 22
In 1963's Maniac, we journey to France, and fine scenery, and a surprising array of animals (turkeys!). Alas, while one might expect from the title they're about to enjoy a fast-paced thrilling horror, this is not the case. Thank goodness there are pretty shots where you can see people horse-riding across the beach. One of us was more impressed by this movie than the other, but not by the end of the podcast. Liz feels very guilty about this.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 21
The month we're off to see 1963's The Damned, which is in many ways too films smooshed together. Neither of them are horror. Sorry about that. But one is very John Wyndam, hurrah!
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 20
This month it's time for The Phantom of the Opera, an under-rated delight of a Hammer film. We're joined by special guest Jonathan Rigby, author of the sublime English Gothic, to discuss theatre politics, underground sewer layers, and dashing romances. Marvel at the comedy charwomen! Be impressed at Herbert Lom's acting eye! Flail at Patrick Troughton, rat-catcher extraordinaire!
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 19
Technically, maybe, Captain Clegg may not be a horror movie, but it does have Peter Cushing in it, and a scary marsh, and skeletons on skeletal horses...which sounds quite horror-ish but that's merely a cunning ruse in the first five minutes to suggest it might be a horror. And the first two minutes is a cunning to ruse to suggest it might be a pirate movie. It is neither of these things. Rather tis a charming tale of 18th century village life very rudely interrupted by some soldiers who have issues with reasonably priced fine wines. For shame.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 18
Cats! Aren't they wonderful? And just to show how wonderful they are, Hammer made a whole film about their loyalty, tenacity, intelligence, and profound sense of justice. It's not the cat's fault the humans keep having the same conversation over and over again, which is perhaps not the most entertaining choice that could have been made. But Barbara Shelley and Andre Morell are there to try and make things better. They don't always succeed, but they try dammit.
Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 17
The Curse of the Werewolf is a charming tale with beautiful sets, characters, and performances. Or it's a thing that happens with no shape or point. There may be some slight disagreement this episode, but no-one can disagree about the goats: they are delightful. More goats please.

Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 16
This episode we're joined by documentary-maker Chris Chapman for the delightful horror-thriller A Taste of Fear. After the last Hammer thiller, there was some trepidation approaching this one, but Jimmy Sangster rarely disappoints. A Taste of Fear is a gorgeous movie, one that we're slightly bewildered isn't more well known, and if you haven't seen we advise you to try and give it a watch before listening to the podcast. So often the final act of a horror or a thriller can leave you feeling disappointed and unsatisfied, but A Taste of Fear is so very keen that that doesn't happen, and is very much worth going into entirely unspoiled.

Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 15
The Full Treatment's American title is Stop Me Before I Kill! Should you trust films with exclamation marks in their titles? Well, yes (and also trust podcasts with exclamation marks in their titles, ahem, Verity!, ahem). Should you watch The Full Treatment? Heck, no. That's not to say it's uniformly awful, it's not. There are a lot of good points. Alas, any good points are buried beneath the emotionally messed-up hero who attempts to kill his wife several times and we're supposed to sympathise with his misery and not the poor woman he's trying to kill. I made a lot of notes. Most of them were swearing.

Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 14
In this month's Hammer House of Podcast, we reach 1960's The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll. Don't let the title fool you, there's only one face, but it comes in bearded and clean-shaven version. Marvel at how both Jekyll and Hyde are awful people! Delight that Christopher Lee has a real proper acting part that he's very good at! And despair at the endless can-can scenes! Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 13
After the success of Hammer's first vampire film, The Horror of Dracula, Dracula is back in their first sequel, The Brides of Dracula! ...oh, no, he's not. Oh dear. Not to worry, what need have we for Dracula when there's Peter Cushing? And he actually is back as the marvellously dashing Van Helsing, ready to save the world - or at least Transylvania and the Lower Danube - from the evils of vampirism in one of Hammer's most magnificent movies. Hammer House of Podcast - 2018 Christmas Special Commentary
For our first Christmas episode (and to fufill our official Patreon support obligation) we've made our first commentary! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the marvellous Doctor Who and the Daleks. It's Doctor Who in colour for the first time, with the Peter Cushing off to Skaro to defeat some very colourful, very angry mutants. While not a Christmas movie, it is a warm and cosy family movie that we hope you enjoy. And a happy Christmas to all of you at home! Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 12
It's something a bit different this month, and not in a fun way. 1960's Never Take Sweets from a Stranger is a superb and powerful film, still shockingly relevant and very dark. So here's our first content warning: in this episode we're discussing a film with themes of paedophilia and the sexual abuse of children. Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 11
This month it's time for The Man Who Cheated Death, about a man...who cheats death. Christopher Lee's in it, which is lovely, and he wears a tux. Alas, his tux-wearing skills are not quite good enough to distract from the endless five hour scenes where words start to lose all meaning. For one of us; Paul was clearly watching an entirely different movie and didn't think the world would end before we reached the end credits. Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 10
In this month's episode we encounter a mummy. Not the actual original mummy, but a rewrite of Universal's original mummy in The Mummy (1959). Hammer have been freed from the shackles of legal worry, having reached an agreement wiht Universal that means they can now nick their plots and monster designs. Is this a good idea? No. Not really. The Mummy might have Peter Cushing as our dashing hero, and Christopher Lee as the monster, but it's no Dracula, or Curse of Frankenstein. On the bright side, Christopher Lee is wears gold nail polish, and if you have a short memory for plot, you're in luck! This film will remind you again and again of what just happened. Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 9
In this month's episode we arrive at Hammer's first and only foray into the world of Sherlock Holmes. It's 1959's The Hound of the Baskervilles, where Peter Cushing does some spectacular running through mist and moor, and one of us genuinely thinks the Great Dane in a mask looks scary. And we've also got a special guest! It's James Goss, writer of many excellent things, but most relevant here is his play, The Gentlemen of Horror, a poignant and intimate work exploring the friendship between Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee through the decades. Hammer House of Podcast - Episode 8
This month it's The Revenge of Frankenstein, sequel to the superb Curse of Frankenstein. Can it possibly live up to its predecessor? Well, it does feature rather more guinea pigs, so it's off to a good start. And these ones wheek. More importantly, there's Peter Cushing dashing around the place, cutting up chicken and people, and working on fixing all his mistakes of the first film. Hurrah! Character development! We apologise for the length of this episode. We rather liked the movie. Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HHoP Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/HammerHousePod
