Special podcast: edge from ambition to implementation

E

Edge computing's benefits to data security, latency and bandwidth are making possible a host of new use cases across a swathe of industries. WWT's new research, conducted with Analysys Mason, reveals the scale of the Edge opportunity by highlighting 30 use cases expected to deliver significant revenues and that really is just the tip of the iceberg. Making these use cases a reality is the topic of the final podcast in our series on Edge computing for telecoms service providers, created by WWT in partnership with Telecoms.com. In this episode, Telecoms.com editor Scott Bicheno is joined by WWT's EMEA Chief Technologist for Service Providers Daniel Valle and Intel’s Senior Solution Architect Larry Horner. Their conversation gets into the nitty-gritty, exploring what enterprises are already doing with Edge, taking in examples such as high-resolution cameras in industrial QA and data security in remote healthcare. They discuss what makes Edge so well suited to these applications, and why telcos are essential to their success. As Larry says, no-one's data gets to the cloud without going through service providers. But the opportunity is much greater than that. This discussion highlights why telcos should look to move from offering connectivity to providing use cases and outcomes, and how the right partnerships can help them turn the complex ecosystem of Edge hardware, software and connectivity into enterprise-ready platforms and solutions. Special podcast: edge modernizing to monetise

E

Edge isn't just a new technology; it's a complex ecosystem of hardware, software and connectivity, and the radical new outcomes that can be achieved with them. Telcos are well placed to capitalise on the connectivity needs of enterprises exploring Edge computing, but that's just one piece of the puzzle and just one aspect of the $17bn opportunity at stake. Monetising Edge is the topic of the second of three podcasts on Edge computing for telecoms service providers, created by WWT in partnership with Telecoms.com. In this episode, Telecoms.com editor Scott Bicheno is joined by WWT's EMEA Chief Technologist for Service Providers Daniel Valle and GSMA's Head of Future Networks Henry Calvert. Their conversation centres on telcos main challenge to cultivating success in enterprise Edge: the new expertise and models needed in order to adapt from providing the plumbing for voice, messaging and data to offering value-added services such as apps and experiences. There's no one way to monetise Edge, but as they discuss, there is a consistent theme: partnerships. With the increasing cloudification of the network, forging partnerships will enable telcos to manage the risk inherent in adopting IT production models, upskill on emerging trends like OpenRAN, and bridge gaps in their knowledge to offer the easy-to-consume Edge platforms that enterprises are crying out for. The first podcast in the series, Opportunity at the Edge, can be found here (https://soundcloud.com/telecoms-podcast/special-podcast-opportunity-at-the-edge), and the final installment will be available on 2/7. Special podcast: opportunity at the edge

E

Telecoms.com partnered with WWT to record a three-part podcast series exploring enterprise Edge computing for telecoms service providers. In the first of these podcasts, Telecoms.com editor Scott Bicheno is joined by WWT’s EMEA Chief Technologist for Service Providers Daniel Valle and Dell Technologies? EMEA GTM Manager Telco/5G Eric van Vliet. They discuss enterprise attitudes to Edge and the $17bn revenue opportunity it represents, based on findings from new research conducted with Analysys Mason. They also delve into why telcos? infrastructure and experience make them so well positioned to capitalise on the Edge ecosystem. After touching on other hot topics such as OpenRAN, they conclude that the Edge opportunity is great, but so is the complexity of the space. That complexity, and the fact that telcos are not currently front-of mind for enterprise Edge deployments, make forging the right partnerships essential for any telco eager to grab a slice of the Edge pie. Don’t miss the following two podcasts in the series, which will be available on 18/6 and 2/7. M&A, retail and social media

E

This week’s pod is a bit late because everyone is slacking off, which also means you have to settle for a dialogue between Jamie and Scott. They start by looking at how the European telecoms mergers and acquisitions market is evolving, move on to assessing the state of telecoms retail in these locked-down times and conclude with a discussion of the increased pressure being put on social media over censorship.
