StorageGRID Webscale is NetApp’s object data storage system. Recently version 10.2 was released and added a number of new and interesting features. To enlighten us, we asked none other than Duncan Moore, Director for StorageGRID at NetApp, to visit us and give us a breakdown. For our episode this week, we sit down with the group again, Evan Miller, Enterprise Architect for NetApp, Eduardo Rivera, Storage Architect for NetApp, and Stetson Webster, Storage Architect for NetApp. This week’s focus is on data protection being integrated with the storage services offerings. Protecting data is a critical function of any infrastructure, and working with the application administrators to clearly define a set of requirements early is key to ensuring success. The NetApp IT team talks to us about their experience with evaluating the needs of our applications and how they can more effectively provide protection while also keeping cost controlled.

Designing storage services which are capable of meeting the needs of the applications which your organization uses is critical to ensuring success. For our episode this week we sit down with Evan Miller, Enterprise Architect for NetApp, Eduardo Rivera, Storage Architect for NetApp, and we welcome back Stetson Webster (@stetsonwebster), Storage Architect for NetApp. Eduardo and Stetson are the storage architects for NetApp IT, also known as Customer 1, and they recently went through a Storage Services Design Workshop with Evan and his team. The result has been nothing less than phenomenal, resulting in appropriately sized storage systems which deliver improved services, balancing capacity and performance, and reduced overall cost for storage services.

With SMB 3.0., Microsoft changed the game for how applications like SQL and Hyper-V could be deployed. Continuously available file shares allow organizations to deploy business critical workloads with all the performance and availability traditionally associated with block based storage (iSCSI/FCP), but with the ease of use of a file share. Microsoft and NetApp have been partnering for years to provide enterprise class file storage. Clustered Data ONTAP’s implementation of SMB is the best iteration yet. On this week’s pre-recorded episode, the guys hop into a time bubble with Marc Waldrop to discuss all things SMB – starting with answering the age old, often debated question “CIFS or SMB?”. Docker remains one of the hot topics in the industry today, and last week was their second conference of the year: DockerCon EU 2015. NetApp was a Gold sponsor of the conference, and we proudly sent six people to meet, talk, geek, and fraternize with the attendees. We had several demos at our booth, including cloning containerized MongoDB utilizing FlexClones and the Snap Creator Framework, automatic registration of containerized applications with Snap Creator, the NetApp Native Driver for ClusterHQ’s Flocker, and deploying a scale-out Docker Registry using NetApp and SnapMirror. This week we have Garrett Mueller, Technical Director for NetApp, and Jonathan Rippy, Software Engineer for NetApp, on the podcast. Garrett and Rippy were two of NetApp’s representatives at DockerCon Europe and they share with us their experiences at the conference, as well as some of the things they learned from the sessions.

OpenStack is the choice of many organizations who want to provide private cloud services for their applications which follow the Amazon Web Services (AWS) model. While cloud may be the future of applications, much of the data still resides in on premises resources. The hyper-scale cloud providers, such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Asure, and IBM SoftLayer, provide highly available, and highly durable, storage for a reasonable price. This means that many organizations are looking to, and adopting, public cloud providers as another tier of storage for their organization. NetApp’s AltaVault provides the ability for any organization to leverage their existing backup suite of software, while storing the data in the cloud. This seamlessly enables massive scalability, offsite recoverability, and efficient storage of backup data for any organization, with minimal effort. Our guest this week is NetApp’s Rachel Dines, Product Marketing Manager for AltaVault. Rachel and the podcast team discuss cloud economics, use cases, and how AltaVault increases flexibility, efficiency, and security for organizations who want to use the cloud as a backup target. This week we sit down with NetApp’s John Spinks, Technical Marketing Engineer, to talk about SnapCenter. SnapCenter is the next generation of our SnapManager and SnapCreator technology, and is the first step in NetApp’s centralized data protection software vision. SnapCenter provides protection that works across the entire data fabric as applications move back and forth, in and out of the cloud.

Neto talks with us about the CPOC, it’s function in the company, and how customers can request an engagement from the team. He also happens to be one of NetApp’s premier Oracle specialists, so we take the opportunity to talk about database workloads when using NetApp All-Flash FAS.

SSD drives are finally nearing the inflection point where the price per gigabyte is dropping below the price of traditional spinning hard drives and this will have another momentous impact to storage vendors and the devices being sold. At NetApp, our engineering IT team recently deployed an large-scale virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) aimed at increasing security, flexibility, and mobility for all of our engineering workforce.
