Van Allen Probe A: A Fourteen-Year Space Odyssey Ends
After a remarkable fourteen-year mission, NASAs Van Allen Probe A is set to re-enter Earths atmosphere, potentially as early as Tuesday evening. Launched in 2012, the probe was initially designed for a two-year mission but extended its data collection on Earths radiation belts for seven more years. Despite running out of fuel in 2019, its data continues to aid in protecting satellites, power grids, and astronauts from space weather. The probes re-entry, initially predicted for 2032, has been accelerated due to stronger solar winds during the current solar maximum. Most of the spacecraft is expected to burn up on re-entry, with only a few durable parts potentially reaching the ground. The risk to people on the ground is deemed very low.
