On this episode of TAXI TV, we ask if you want to see TAXI Music's CEO cry!! Join us as we bid a fond farewell to a beloved staff member! We first met Briagha McTavish when she was a teenager, who along with her dad (Neil McTavish), would come to the TAXI Road Rally to hone her skills as a singer/songwriter. We looked forward to seeing her each year, and got to know her as one of our very favorite members and TAXI Road Rally volunteers. When she graduated from high school, Briagha called TAXI to let us know she was moving to Los Angeles, and asked if we had any job openings. As it turned out, we had a temp job making outbound reminder calls to members about the upcoming Rally Music Convention. Briagha hit it out of the park, and we offered her a full-time job. She’s been an integral and highly-valued part of the staff for about four years, and we’ve watched her grow up right under our noses. It’s bittersweet that Monday will be Briagha’s last “official” day at TAXI, because she’s decided she loves her fiancé Jacob more than us. We’re really happy for the two of them, but sad to see Briagha move back to the Midwest! Please join us as we roast her and toast her on this week’s TAXI TV. On this episode of TAXI TV, we'll be going over pretty surprising ways that you can benefit as a musician from this strange pandemic! The havoc the COVID-19 virus has wreaked on the entire planet is beyond measure. We’ll be feeling the effects for years to come—maybe generations. - The unthinkable sadness families and friends feel when they lose somebody they love. - The physical and emotional toll it has taken on the heroic and tireless healthcare workers and first responders. - The stress the scientists are going through as they try to fast track a vaccine. - The emotional rollercoaster and fear brought daily into our homes via the media. - The lives ruined (and likely some suicides) caused by the unthinkable economic destruction. Businesses lost, jobs lost, and retirement funds lost. - The emotional stress and loneliness of being isolated in our homes for weeks on end. - The horrible toll it’s taken on our most precious and sometimes least valued generation, as they remain isolated from family and friends in their senior care facilities. Those are more than just bullet points. This time, it’s not somebody else over there. It’s us… all of us! Those are the real stories of real people. And much like what happened in the aftermath of 9/11, these stories will be told for decades in books, by word of mouth, on the Internet, and mostly by Hollywood. Scripts were being written all over Hollywood as soon as this pandemic became our new reality. Hundreds of them. Some may have already gotten the green light, and casting is quietly being done over Zoom and Skype as I type this. As soon as it’s allowed, socially-distanced directors will be shouting, “Action!” on movie and TV sets all over the world. And every single one of those productions is going to need music. Yes, in a perverse twist of fate, musicians who are often at the bottom of the food chain, get to go to the front of the line this time around. “How?” you ask? Because, you can start making music for the stories of the COVID-19 Pandemic right now! You don’t need to wait for anybody to green light your productions. Together, you and I are going to look at every possible aspect of where, when, and how music will be used in the various types of TV shows, documentaries, and feature films. We’re going to look at this through the lenses of screenwriters, directors, producers, music supervisors, and editors. Dramedy was most-likely popularized by the long-running TV show, Desperate Housewives, and seemed to take on a life of its own after that. There are actually sub-genres of Dramedy now like Urban Drmeday and Latin Dramedy. You’d be hard-pressed to find a reality TV show that doesn’t use Dramedy in a variety of ways. Sneaking around, waiting for something odd to happen, a quirky moment, or something that would cause eyebrows to raise, are all examples of when Dramedy would be applicable. As I was fantasizing about doing a TAXI TV featuring great examples of this genre, I listened to some of TAXI member Steve Barden’s work. The first thought I had was, “These are state of the art.” Steve’s cues are lovingly crafted, and frankly, they might actually be better than they need to be! But, I was so impressed by the quality of Steve’s work, that I decided to dedicate an entire episode of TAXI TV to playing lots and lots of his Dramedy Cues. With the advent of great, inexpensive recording gear, many of the venerable, large-format studios that have been instrumental in many of the biggest hit records have sadly gone the way of the Dodo Bird. That’s not the case for Westlake! As a matter of fact, it’s one of a handful of yesterday’s most iconic studios that continues to thrive in today’s recording industry. When you sit down to compose an Instrumental piece, do you start with an emotion in mind and stay on track as the piece develops? When the piece is done, is the mood or emotion clear and obvious? Michael Lloyd was Vice President of A&R for MGM Records by the age of 20, and for more than 45 years has been producing hit records and soundtracks, earning more than 105 Gold and Platinum awards, and selling over 150 million records. Some of the artists he’s worked with include, Barry Manilow, Mike Love and the Beach Boys, Lou Rawls, Sylvie Vartan, Shaun Cassidy, Steve Holy, Belinda Carlisle, The Monkees, The Bellamy Brothers, The Osmonds, Stryper, Sammy Davis, Jr., Bill Medley, The Righteous Brothers, Debby Boone, Kimberley Locke, Leif Garrett, Air Supply, and Frank Sinatra, just to name a few. Michael was the Music Supervisor for the film Dirty Dancing, wrote the Latin dance music for Patrick and Jennifer to dance to - and produced the Dirty Dancing soundtrack album. Currently, there are several “Dirty Dancing - the Musical” companies that are touring all over the world. He’s done the scoring, music supervision, songwriting, song placement, and/or music producing for nearly 200 motion pictures, TV movies, TV specials and television series.
