Thomas Matejek, a man from Manatee County, Florida, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. He killed his mother and her boyfriend in November 2023, after previously attacking them in May of the same year. Despite being deemed incompetent to stand trial, Matejek was released on conditional release, following warnings from his mothers sister, Krista Kale, about potential violence. Kale is now advocating for law changes to prevent violent individuals ruled incompetent from being released pending trial.
