Quinn Borchard is living the tennis life in all the ways. As a former top SoCal junior and top college player, he also spent some time playing on the pro & ITF circuit. Now in his 30s, he competes in National Tournaments, has collected a few gold balls and even dabbles in pickleball. Plus, he is the Head Pro at Sunset Hills in Thousand Oaks, CA and has created one of the top young junior programs in the country for kids under the age of 14. On top of all that and maybe most importantly, he is a Dad (and husband!) and has two sons playing tennis at different levels which all equates to the fact he is learning to balance being a dad and a coach for a top up and coming junior player. Jennifer Edmonson is a pioneer when it comes to wheelchair tennis. More than 25 years ago, she volunteered at the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge, La. Five years after that, she took on the role of tournament director. And since, she has been helping change lives and grow the sport with her passion and involvement in wheelchair tennis. Just last month, Jennifer was named Wheelchair Tennis Champion of 2021 and her tournament, the Cajun Classic, is a Super Series event on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour and is easily one of the premier wheelchair tennis tournaments in the country, twice winning USTA Southern Wheelchair Tournament of the Year honors. It isn't every day you have the opportunity to speak with a pioneer in the tennis industry. In today's episode, Brad Parks, the founder of Wheelchair Tennis, share his story with Talk Tennis. He discusses his life-changing accident which left him as a paraplegic and put him in a wheelchair at 18 years old. Turning lemons into lemonade, Brad quickly decided he would play tennis, and the rest is history. The sport began to grow in the 1980s and today, wheelchair tennis is played in nearly 100 countries. There are wheelchair tournaments at all 4 Grand Slams. It is a recognized sport at the Paralympics and the Wheelchair Tennis Tour comprises more than 150 tournaments in 41 countries. His story is inspiring. In 2010, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, he is a 3-time Grand Slam winner, a former number 1 and a Gold Medal Winner. The USTA Southern Section is doing some great things for the sport of tennis. With a section that spans across 9 southern states, in this episode you will hear it's no secret this section is loaded with Southern Charm! Ted Reese (Vice President USTA Southern; National USTA Committee Chair) and Kelly Hesketh (USTA Southern Section Tennis Service Rep) explain all the ways their teams are helping grow and promote tennis from creating leagues of players at all levels and ages who enjoy the physical, mental and social parts of the game to creating programs for first time players, like "Try Tennis." They have programs that help ensure local parks have courts that are kept up so anyone can play for free; they promote wheelchair tennis; they are keen on junior development; and there are some great players coming out of this section! The USTA Southern Section has a goal to grow tennis and support the more than 140,000+ members in our nine states - Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina & Tennessee - that makes up nearly 27% of the USTA membership. Luisa Stefani is beaming and giddy as she joins us in San Jose, CA a day after arriving from Japan with her Bronze Medal proudly adorned around her neck to tell us her story about her last minute trip to Tokyo. Having battled some injuries and illnesses keeping her out of important tournaments, Luisa accepted the opportunity to represent her country just wasn't in the cards for her in 2021 and instead took a trip out of town and was ready to enjoy some time with her team celebrating birthdays and life off the court. But, after receiving a last minute call, she quickly packed her bags and headed to Tokyo for a life changing experience where she partnered with a long time friend, competed for her country (Brazil) in women's and mixed doubles, and got to check off a massive bucket list item off her list. In this episode, she talks about her mindset, obstacles she faced, the experience, her team, meeting other athletes and so much more while sharing how her and her partner captured the first medal in tennis for Brazil!
