Show Notes
Michelle Carter was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging her boyfriend, Conrad Roy, to die by suicide in Massachusetts in 2014. Through hundreds of texts and a pivotal phone call, Carter urged Roy to get back in his carbon monoxide-filled truck when he started to back out, then failed to call for help while he died. Her highly publicized “texting suicide” case led to her receiving a 15-month jail sentence in 2017, after a judge ruled her actions and inaction were “wanton and reckless,” setting a controversial legal precedent for digital-age culpability.
