Control What You Can

Last week, I lead a training session for new and aspiring leaders, and some of our discussion reminded me of an issue that many leaders – especially front-line leaders – confront on a regular basis. Front-line leaders frequently deal with changes, policies, and procedures that they did not create. These issues create constraints on what you can do in your leadership role, and it's tempting to both focus on and get frustrated by these limitations – to focus on what you cannot do. In this episode, I'm proposing a way to look at these constraints so that they don't drive you crazy. Additional Leadership Resources Take our free DISC Assessment. It's Better to Disarm Than to Strongarm

In any conversation where there is a potential for disagreement, it's tempting to try to force – strongarm – the other person in to compliance or agreement. While that sometimes works, it's not generally the best way to gain agreement and cooperation. It's generally better to disarm the other person – to take away the issues that might cause a confrontation – than to strongarm – to use force to "make" the other person do what you want done.
