美國國會於美東時間6日下午舉行特別聯席會議，認證2020年美國總統大選結果，並由副總統潘斯主持會議，不過現任總統川普的支持者們，卻在國會大廈外與警方起衝突，甚至有部分支持者失控闖入國會大廈，情急之下，警方只好封鎖國會大廈，將彭斯與議員們緊急撤離，而華府特區也宣布晚上6點開始實施宵禁。
