Syracuse basketball suffers rock bottom loss under Adrian Autry to Miami

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 91-84 loss to Miami on Tuesday night. Brent discusses how It was the rock bottom loss for Syracuse under head coach Adrian Autry. Sure, SU has been blown out by 29-points to Duke and has several double-digit losses this season, but losing to a 5-18 team with one ACC win this season entering Tuesday night's game? That's about as low as it gets. Axe discusses how Syracuse AD John Wildhack will struggle to convince the Orange fanbase that Autry is the right guy going forward for SU basketball with the bad losses piling up. Syracuse's big issue against the Hurricanes was defense, or lack thereof, a consistent problem for the Orange all season that has not improved but was at its worst against Miami. Best. Worst. Game. Ever. Syracuse outlasts BC in triple overtime

Brent Axe recaps a wild 95-86 win for Syracuse basketball over Boston College in triple-overtime at the JMA Dome. It certainly wasn't the prettiest game in the world. In fact, one might call it the "best worst game ever," but Syracuse got the win in its first game to go to three overtimes since the famous 6OT game against UConn in the 2009 Big East Tournament. JJ Starling led Syracuse with 28 points. Eddie Lampkin played 49 minutes, giving Syracuse a strong 14 points and 18 rebounds. Brent discusses how the game won't be remembered with reverence, but was a reminder of the curveball sports likes to toss at us once in awhile. He also digs into some coaching decisions made by Adrian Autry, including why Elijah Moore didn't play past much past a strong first half. Brent also got amazing feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders on SU's triple-overtime win against the Eagles. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Another Syracuse basketball eyesore vs. Duke - What's gone wrong and who's to blame?

Brent Axe and Chris Carlson discuss the downfall of Syracuse basketball and the latest Orange sports topics on "Syracuse Sports" live! Brent and Chris start with the SU's 83-54 loss to Duke, the worst loss of the 2024-25 season for SU and Duke's 10th straight win over the Orange. How can SU close the gap with the best team in the ACC? Does Syracuse have the money to buy its way out of their problems and should SU fans believe in Adrian Autry as the guy that can lead the Orange out of the below .500 abyss they find themselves in? Axe and Carlson also discuss SU offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon's contract extension/raise and how it demonstrates the new world SU football is in to maintain the success found in the first season of the Fran Brown era. Brent also got amazing feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders (even late into the night!) on the loss to Duke. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Duke dominates Syracuse again. The gap between the two programs is humbling.

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 83-54 loss to Duke and the state of the Orange hoops program. Wednesday's 29-point win by Duke over Syracuse, its 10th straight win over the Orange, shows the gap has never been wider between the two ACC programs. Brent examines some big picture postgame comments made by SU head coach Adrian Autry and questions why SU fans should believe him. As for the the game, Cooper Flagg was not as dominant as advertised with 11 points and 5 rebounds but certainly had some "Sportscenter" worthy moments. The crowd at the dome (listed as 23,213) brought some buzz and energy to the building, especially the students, but unfortunately were not given a game to invest in as the 2nd half became a laugher. Brent also got amazing feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders (even late into the night!) on the loss to Duke. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Syracuse basketball digs too deep of a hole to escape in loss at Stanford

Brent Axe breaks down Syracuse basketball's 70-61 loss to Stanford. The Orange dug itself way too deep of a hole to escape in trailing Stanford 25-2 in the first-half. While SU did cut the lead down to six points late in the game, it couldn't do enough to overcome Stanford, who never trailed against Syracuse. Axe broke down SU's poor starts and the other stat that keeps sinking games for SU, points off turnovers. SU gave up 19 points off 14 turnovers. With SU heading for a losing season, Axe wonders how low things could sink for SU and if Adrian Autry can find an identity for this team and give the fan base something to cling on to other than a good recruiting class coming in for 2025. Syracuse football's 2025 schedule is one of the toughest in the country (and maybe its hardest ever)

Brent Axe breaks down the 2025 Syracuse football schedule on a live edition of Syracuse Sports. SU's 2025 schedule is clearly one of the toughest in the country with 5 opponents who won 10+ games, 7 opponents who won 9+ games and all 11 FBS opponents went to a bowl in 2024. SU will play 4 teams that made the College Football Playoff (Tennessee, SMU, Clemson, Notre Dame) all away from the JMA Dome. Brent gives some initial thoughts about SU fans need to lean into the schedule for it is as interesting and fun a slate SU has had in addition to its difficulty. There's also a few really fun road trip opportunities. Brent breaks down the schedule and gives you his first thoughts on what SU's record should be in 2025. Eddie Lampkin cleans up the glass but Syracuse basketball comes up short against Pittsburgh

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 77-73 loss to Pittsburgh at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon. SU lost to Pitt despite out-rebounding the Panthers 48-31, with Eddie Lampkin collecting 23 of those boards, and hitting 11 3-pointers. Pitt was able to overcome that by only committing three turnovers and shooting 58% in the 2nd half against the Orange. Syracuse basketball stumbles to another double-digit loss at Clemson

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 86-72 loss to Clemson on Wednesday night. SU's first-half struggles continued at Clemson as the Tigers out-scored SU 28-10 in the last 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Clemson also dominated points in the paint (40-20) and points off turnovers (19-4). The 14-point loss was SU's sixth double-digit defeat of the 2024-25 season. JJ Starling was one of the lone bright spots for the Orange with 25 points but Brent describes how SU needs more balance on offense and more movement on offense to generate more points. Louisville shuts down JJ Starling and crushes Syracuse at the JMA Dome

Brent Axe breaks down Syracuse basketball's 85-61 loss to Louisville at the JMA Dome. Louisville completely shut down SU guard JJ Starling, who was held to four points on 1-of-7 shooting. The Orange really didn't have a Plan B on offense with Starling out of the mix and Donnie Freeman still absent from the lineup with a leg injury. SU's defense wasn't much better as the Cardinals hit 12 3-pointers on the Orange with most of those coming from Chucky Hepburn, who had 24 points. Brent also discussed the vibe (or lack there of) in the Dome with a listed crowd of 19,750 certainly being inflated. Syracuse basketball uses late run to earn first road win of season over BC

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 79-71 win over Boston College. The Orange used a late 22-6 run and were clutch at the free throw line down the stretch to earn its first road win of the season. JJ Starling was one of first Syracuse players in double figures with 26 points. Eddie Lampkin added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kyle Cuffe gave SU a major lift off the bench in the second half, including two clutch 3-pointers. Brent also discusses how Adrian Autry needs to flip his starting lineup to JJ Starling, Cuffe, Eddie Lampkin, Jyare Davis (if Donnie Freeman is still out with injury) and Lucas Taylor and if Syracuse can "punch up" and beat Louisville on Tuesday night at the JMA Dome. Kyle McCord moves on: Who replaces him as Syracuse QB and the massive impact he made in one season

Brent Axe reacts to the news that Syracuse Kyle McCord is moving on to the NFL and will no longer pursue a NCAA waiver for another season of college football. McCord made a massive impact in one season at Syracuse, leading the nation with 4,779 passing yards. That set a Syracuse and ACC single-season passing mark. McCord also set a Syracuse record with 34 touchdowns in a single season. With McCord's place on the Mt. Rushmore of Syracuse quarterbacks, Brent has early thoughts on the quarterback competition to replace him. Will Fran Brown look for another quarterback in the transfer portal or will the competition focus on LSU transfer Rickie Collins Jr., sophomore Jakhari Williams and senior Michael Johnson Jr. with freshman Luke Carney and Rich Belin also in the mix. Brent also discusses the legacy McCord will have that could one day be compared to the impact Carmelo Anthony made on the basketball program as a one-and-done talent. Syracuse basketball falls below .500 with Kiyan Anthony watching courtside

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 81-71 loss to Wake Forest at the JMA Dome on New Year's Eve. SU fell to 6-7 (0-2) with top recruit Kiyan Anthony watching courtside. The more SU slides down the hill in the 2024-25, the more fans will start looking ahead to what Anthony's Orange will look like next year. In the meantime, Brent talked about hiw Adrian Autry has to switch up his starting line-up with Chris Bell's sustained struggles. Lucas Taylor and Kyle Cuffe Jr. gave SU a lift off the bench against Wake Forest. Can they be a consistent 1-2 punch for SU into ACC play? Axe also discussed the main New Year's resolution SU has to make about starting off games better and where some of the inconsistencies on defense and #FreeThrowsMatter need to improve. Brent also got amazing feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders on the win and where Syracuse basketball stands entering league play. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Syracuse enters ACC slate at .500 after win over Bucknell at JMA Dome

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 75-63 win over Bucknell as SU gets ready to begin its full-time ACC slate. Brent discussed how SU continued to struggle from the 3-point line, shooting 1-of-11 distance in the 2nd half. Encouraging signs from the win included Eddie Lampkin (18 pts, 11 rebs) and Donnie Freeman (15 pts, 11 rebs) both scoring double-doubles and SU's switch to using more zone press seemed to light a fuse on the defensive end. Brent also wonders how Chris Bell can kick things into gear and which of the transfers will have the most success in ACC play. Dreaming of a Kyle McCord return and will Washington State make it to the Holiday Bowl? (With Chris Carlson)

On the latest episode of Syracuse Sports, Brent Axe envisions a world where SU quarterback Kyle McCord is granted a fifth-year of eligibility and what that would look like for Syracuse football. Brent also navigates through a feeling he's never experienced from Syracuse basketball fans and how they are going to have to grind through the rest of the 2024-25 season. Brent then brings on syracuse.com's Chris Carlson to discuss the situation with SU football's Holiday Bowl opponent, Washington State. The Cougars have lost over 20 players to the transfer portal, including 12 starters. Will they be able to field a team on December 27 in San Diego? Brent and Chris also discuss the ups and downs of college football's "silly season" with the transfer portal, NIL, recruiting, bowl prep and the College Football Playoff all intertwining. Georgetown zones out Syracuse to win 100th-all-time meeting between old rivals

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 75-71 loss to Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at the JMA Dome. The listed attendance for Saturday's game was 17,18. While the fans that did go to the game were loud and created a great atmosphere for the 100th meeting of SU-Georgetown, that's a concerning number for SU's main rival in a series that routinely used to get 30,000+ into the Dome. Georgetown ironically used a zone defense, the signature weapon of Jim Boeheim's tenure it had to face for so many years, to flummox the Orange on Saturday afternoon. Eddie Lampkin (18 points) and Jyare Davis (15 points) both had good offensive games inside, but the Orange defense struggled in the paint, get out-scored in that area 48-34. Brent also discusses the continued struggles of Chris Bell in big games, who had just 3 points for Syracuse, and growing fan concerns about Adrian Autry's coaching methods. Brent also reacted to thoughts and opinions from Syracuse Sports Insiders on the loss to Georgetown. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Syracuse basketball's offense overcomes poor defense in win over Albany

Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 102-85 over UAlbany at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night. Tuesday's win was a matter of perspective. SU's offense scored over 100 points in regulation for the first time since 2016. Donnie Freeman had 24 points despite not starting the game. Jaquan Carlos continued to overcome his struggles with 12 points and 12 assists. On the other hand, the Orange defense gave up 51 points in the second half and continued to have sustained defensive breakdowns. Syracuse football set for Holiday Bowl in San Diego to face Washington State

Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse football's Holiday Bowl bid against Washington State. Brent gauges the instant reaction from Orange fans on landing the Holiday Bowl instead of what seemed to be a more favorable location at the Gator Bowl in Florida. Not only does Syracuse have questions about who will play in the Holiday Bowl, Washington State may not have its star quarterback in the game as John Mateer may enter the transfer portal. Brent also looks at some key players that have decisions to make about opting in or out of the bowl game like QB Kyle McCord, RB LeQuint Allen, LB Marlowe Wax, TE Oronde Gadsden II and more. Syracuse basketball fails to hit a 3-pointer, drops ACC opener at Notre Dame

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 69-64 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. The Orange failed to hit a 3-pointer in a game (0-9) for the first time since 2014 in South Bend which was a big factor in the loss along with SU's 16-of-24 mark at the #FreeThrowsMatter line. Brent also discusses how SU head coach Adrian Autry is changing SU's lineup around like they were hockey lines and that is leading to a growing frustration with the SU fan base. Donnie Freeman (20 points 11 rebounds) and Jyare Davis (20 points) played well as did SU point guard Jaquan Carlos (8 points, 7 assists) to overcome some recent struggles. Syracuse Sports Insiders had plenty to say during the game and after about having a hard time connecting to what SU is trying to do under Autry and the lack of identity on offense and defense. Syracuse basketball blown out by Tennessee and failing to meet Adrian Autry's #Orangestandard

There was one positive from SU's lackluster showing in Knoxville during a 96-70 loss to Tennessee and that was Elijah Moore scoring 24 points and continuing to develop as an exciting freshman on the roster. Oh wait. There was one more thing. Chance Westry played for three minutes! He's a real guy! As Brent discussed on the show, it was yet another embarrassing showing for SU in a prime national television spot. SU is 6-15 on ESPN or a broadcast network in the last seasons. What is the #orangestandard that Autry professes to? Even he was saying in postgame that SU didn't play hard enough on defense and "fell apart." Brent focused a good part of postgame on the reaction Syracuse Sports Insiders had during the game and after about having a hard time connecting to what SU is trying to do under Autry and the lack of identity on offense and defense. Syracuse football knocks off Miami in biggest comeback in program history

Brent Axe and Chris Carlson chat live following Syracuse football's 42-38 win over No.6 Miami at the JMA Dome on Saturday. It was the biggest comeback ever for Syracuse football, down 21-0 in the first half. Brent and Chris discuss how SU pulled off the comeback and capped the 2024 regular season at 9-3. SU has a chance to play for a 10-win season for just the third time since 2001. Kyle McCord capped off an incredible season in a Syracuse uniform (provided he doesn't play in SU's bowl game) by becoming the program's first 4,000 yard passer and setting the SU single-season touchdown mark. Brent and Chris also discuss how SU's "bend but don't break" defense made key plays in clutch spots and what the bowl game scenarios look like for the Orange now. On this episode of Syracuse Sports presented by Crouse Health, Brent Axe addresses SU women's basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack calling out SU fans for not going to the JMA Wireless Dome in bigger numbers to support her team. Brent discusses if she was right to call out SU fans and what solution there is (if at all) to get more fans to the games. Kyle McCord continues to set records as Syracuse football gets by stubborn UConn: Bring on Miami

Brent Axe and Chris Carlson chat live following Syracuse football's 31-24 win over UConn at the JMA Dome on Saturday. SU quarterback Kyle McCord continues to chase down records. McCord broke the record for passing yards in a single season on Saturday (3,946). He is 54 yards away from becoming the program's first 4000-yard passer. He also tied the single-season record for passing TDs (26) and passed for 470 yards against UConn. That mark was just 13 aways from breaking SU's single-game passing mark (482). Brent and Chris also discussed an odd "deception" penalty called on SU WR Trebor Pena on the sideline that wiped away a TD, why UConn was able to stay in the game, the upcoming big matchup against Miami (Fran Brown wants College GameDay to come to town!) and more. #FreeThrowsMatter: Syracuse drops close game to Texas in Brooklyn

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 70-66 loss to Texas in Brooklyn. As Brent says often, #FreeThrowsMatter and SU's 9-of-18 performance at the charity stripe cost the Orange in a close loss to the Longhorns. That noted, SU looked as good in the 2nd half of this game as it has in any half this season and maybe gave SU fans hope it can run with some better teams on the schedule. Axe also discussed some lineup changes Adrian Autry made in the 2nd half, how key Eddie Lampkin's energy has been to the Orange and what's holding back Chris Bell from contributing the way SU needs him to. Brent also reacted to opinions and questions from Syracuse Sports Insiders. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Relentless: Syracuse football overcomes 18-point deficit to beat Virginia Tech in overtime

Brent Axe and Emily Leiker recap Syracuse football's thrilling 38-31 overtime win over Virginia Tech at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon. Syracuse trailed Virginia Tech 21-3 in the third quarter but out-scored Virginia Tech 35-17 to win in overtime. Brent and Emily discuss how the Orange got its offense going after struggling in the first half. Wide receiver Justus Ross-Simmons' breakout game had a lot to do with that for the Orange with his 55-yard touchdown starting the comeback. The Orange defense made the big plays in the biggest moments with most of those coming from Marlowe Wax, including forcing a fumble in overtime. Brent and Emily also react to what Fran Brown and players said after the game and to opinions and insight from our Syracuse Sports Insiders. It was a bittersweet show as Emily announced she is leaving Syracuse.com for a new opportunity. Thank you to Emily for all her great work these past few years. We will miss you!
