S1 Ep 24024 - Interview with the Andorian: Noah Averbach-Katz

It happened in Vegas, and we are going to spill the tea. The SyFy Sistas have never laughed as hard as we did with everyone's favorite Discovery Season 3 cast member, Noah Averbach-Katz. The Son of Rachelle, while living a Trekkie's ultimate dream, earned his spot on the cast with his Julliard training, those super expressive eyes, and some good old-fashioned schmoozing. Noah gets silly and serious, and even makes a 'beta-canon logical' call on a burning question. We give a special shout out to our sound engineer DoS, the Anonymous. S1 Ep 23023 - Black Representation in the Star Trek Movies

E

This week the SyFy Sistas look at the thirteen Star Trek films to see how Black actors have fared in them. We rate the TOS crew, the TNG crew, and the Kelvin crew on inclusion. With the help of a repurposed Bechdel-Wallace type test (which gauges how women fare in films) that we call the SyFy Sistas Cultural Inclusion Checklist we hold these films up to their own IDIC imbued mirror. But it's not all "a day in diversity training", we select personal favorites (come on, it's got to be the one with the whales!), and reveal which scenes really get on our last nerves. Check out the Nerd Trek podcast #114 and #115 for J.D.'s full take on Star Trek: The Final Frontier. S1 Ep 22022 - Collecting 101 with The Divine Treasury

E

It's our first Trek Geeks Crossover Show with the Divine Treasury. The fun we have with our Fandom Friday social media posts on the Muthaship group page made the Sistas curious about collecting. So, we decided to go to the pros, Mike Bovia and Jamie Rogers, host of our sister show The Divine Treasury, for an overview on collecting. Jamie gives us critical intel on how to start (go with your passion), where to go for valuations (eBay is your friend), and how to take care of your hoard (don't skimp). From cards, to films, to action figures, to comic books, we run through it all. What the Sistas know is that collectors are diverse and collecting is rather personal. But what we discover is that collecting is another way to connect to the Star Trek community. Hunting for items is like a quest and you can meet all sorts of people in the community willing to help you. Part of the unexpected fun of collecting is swapping stories of your quest for that item that completes your collection. And wow, does Jamie have great stories! Here are the links we mention in the show: https://exo-6.com/ Museum grade Star Trek Figurines https://wixiban.com/ For all things about cards https://fansets.com/collections/star-trek Our sponsor Fansets for all things about pins You can find Mike and Jamie's cool podcast here: https://trekgeeks.com/thedivinetreasury Send them a tweet and say the SyFy Sistas sent you: https://twitter.com/divine_treasury We give a special shout out to our sound engineer DoS, the Anonymous. S1 Ep 21021 - Picard and the Sistas: Guinan, Lily, and Raffi

E

The SyFy Sistas look at the special relationship Captain Jean-Luc Picard maintains with three amazing Black women; Guinan, the El-Aurian bartender from his days on the Enterprise-D, Lily Sloane from his temporal incursion in the film Star Trek: First Contact (1996), and Raffaela (Raffi) Musiker, XO during his command of the Romulan evacuation and later his quest companion in the series Picard. These three women have the ear of the Captain of the Enterprise D and E, the flagship of the Federation fleet, the Chief Contact with the Q Continuum, the Arbiter of Succession for the Klingon Empire, the Savior of Earth from the Borg Invasion, the face of the United Federation of Planets, and a few other things that only Yvette calls him. Our discussion ranges from their conversational styles to our appreciation of the TWA over ugly-ass wigs. But wait until you hear what Fran saw coming that no other SyFy Sista did. S1 Ep 20020 - Malissa Longo of the 7th Rule Podcast

E

Join us for a long-awaited chat with the beautiful, talented, and resilient Malissa Longo, co-host of the 7th Rule Podcast with Cirroc Lofton and Ryan Husk. Malissa is also a business owner and the wife of our beloved Aron Eisenberg. But Malissa is a true multi-hyphenate, dancer, actor, and artist in her own right. The conversation runs from Subrina's beleaguered defense of musicals to the uniqueness of the Star Trek community, Nana Visitor love, Malissa's new acting gig that may go to TV pilot to who is dodging Armin's Shakespeare course. J.D. brings us back from a Q rabbit hole with her love of Malissa's cuff bracelets and wearable art. And finally, Yvette, Tamia, and Fran pose questions we can all get behind, one of which is "Are there any Black Orions?" - Malissa Longo's store: www.walkingartmadebymalissa.com - The 7th Rule Podcast: The 7th Rule - YouTube - Chase Masterson's Foundation: www.BeKindMerch.org - Armin Shimerman's Online Course: https://antaeus.org/academy_classes/mastering-shakespeare/ We give a special shout out to our sound engineer DoS, the Anonymous. S1 Ep 19019 - B'Elanna: Before and After

E

This week the SyFy Sistas sit down with Lucila M or Dr. Luz to talk about our other favorite Chief Engineer, B'Elanna Torres. She is the sister who saves the ship; brilliant, passionate, and loyal. But she is also a sister with deep-seated issues. Our talk with Dr. Luz ranges from B'Elanna 'sciencing' her way out of trouble, making Tom Paris grow up, and facing her inner demons. Do we mention your favorite B'Elanna moment? Tune in and find out. We give a special shout out to our sound engineer DoS, the Anonymous. S1 Ep 18018 - The LeVar Burton Love Jam

E

As LeVar Burton wraps up his week guest hosting Jeopardy, the SyFy Sistas celebrate him with a look back at Star Trek: TNG and its Chief Engineer, Geordi LaForge. But being the Sistas, they also discuss a serious omission in Picard Season 1, an 'if-only' alternate ending to the Leah Brahms storyline, a theory about why the Romulans mess with Geordi, and what was the deal all the attitude in Relics? S1 Ep 17017 - Recap of The Sam and Bucky Show Finale - "One World, One People"

We come to the end of the Falcon's story. And, while the Sistas are okay with "a Black man carrying the Stars and Stripes" they are split on the new costume. Yvette and Tamia won't give Bucky a break about that phone call, and everybody is so done, done, done with Karli, that J.D. must explain Marvel's lack of villain back stories. And despite the plunging helicopters, falling armored cars, and well, fighting, fighting, and more fighting, Subrina finds her first Marvel Easter Egg. Yes, we can say that J.D. has completed her mission – the SyFy Sistas are now good with the MCU. Bring on the Multiverse! S1 Ep 16016 - Recap of The Sam and Bucky Show - Episode 5

E

This episode is emotional for the SyFy Sistas as Yvette breaks down the role of a good soldier being a "good soldier," Tamia breaks down 'erasure' and Isaiah Bradley near breaks down the Sistas. But they bounce right back with an impromptu Black History lesson (see list below). Leave it to J.D. to let us know that 'not my monkey, not my circus' is a thing and give us the Marvel dossier on the Contessa. There are shout outs to the deft acting of Daniel Bruhl as Zemo, Gabrielle Byndloss as Olivia Walker, and Florence Kasumba as the Dora Milaje leader, Ayo. Tamia and J.D. are so done with shield practice montages, and you'll never guess who makes the first Star Trek reference. The following documentaries were mentioned: High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America - Netflix Africa's Great Civilizations, hosted by Prof. Henry Louis Gates – Prime Video The 1619 Project Docuseries – Hulu You can find the SyFy Sistas online at syfysistas.com Facebook @SyFy Sistas Twitter: @Syfy Sistas Instagram: @syfy.sistas And we give a special shout out to our sound engineer DoS, the Anonymous One. S1 Ep 15015 - Recap of The Sam & Bucky Show: - Episode 4

E

J.D. continues to take the point on our FAWS deep dive where the Sistas ask: Can you be a superhero without being super? Yvette keeps it real deconstructing the dilemma of lost people. We get back to the everyday with a Tina Fey reference, a discussion of snatching Lemar's Black Card, and Tom Hanks in Castaway. While Tamia wants more on the Blip, J.D. yes, J.D. sees the human side of John Walker. And just wait until we get to (spoiler alert) the entrance of the Dora Milaje. S1 Ep 14014 - Recap of The Sam and Bucky Show - Episode 3

E

Things get real in "Power Broker" as Sam and Bucky are involved in a jailbreak and spy antics in the search for Karli, the Angry Child. The Sistas discuss poor Bucky's reprise as the Winter Soldier. Yvette gets him, Subrina thinks he's alright, Tamia thinks he's layered, but J.D. nails his problem to the wall with millennial accuracy. While Tamia tackles Zemo and iconography, and Yvette explains Walker and Lemar, we learn what J.D. thinks about all three of them. Subrina goes deep into "Trouble Man", while Fran drops love for...swing music. Evil Madripoor, wicked sartorial choices, and a killer cameo round out FAWS Episode 3. But can the Sistas continue their Star Trek reference streak? Who's quoting Dr. Michio Kaku and why? And how did Fiats get into this? S1 Ep 13013 - Recap of The Sam and Bucky Show - Episode 2

E

The Sistas react viscerally to the happenings in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier #102. While Tamia does her best to keep the discussion on track and J.D. drops more incredible Easter Eggs, Yvette takes us to the Lord of the Rings, Subrina makes a temporal incursion to Episode 3, Fran is clear about where she stands on John Walker, and we ALL have something to say about Lemar. From competitive therapy to secret experiments on Black G.I.s this episode from Marvel Studios churns up some serious stuff...and we loved it. Plus, try to guess which one of the Sistas brings the whole discourse back to Star Trek this week. E

Black female lead on the bridge is an idea that sent a vocal minority of Star Trek fans into a feedback loop. But relax, because Michael Burnham is really our hero, James T. Kirk! S1 Ep 10010 - The Sisters Who Save The S*#t…um, SHIP.

Latina/Klingon B'Elanna Torres of Star Trek: Voyager and Belter Naomi Nagata of The Expanse, are our favorite chief engineers. Besides being two of the smartest characters in sci-fi, they also have enthralling story arcs that border on 'messy'. All flux couplers being equal, our final question is, "Who would you want on your side in a fire fight?" S1 Ep 9009 - It's STNG "Darmok" vs Doctor Who's "Midnight"

SyFy Sistas J.D., Tamia, and Subrina visit that other celebrated sci-fi franchise, Doctor Who. It's STNG's fan favorite "Darmok" and the episode of Doctor Who "Midnight". Both episodes examine the frustration and fear induced by the inability to communicate. But the REAL drama is will J.D.'s diabolical episode pairing turn Tamia and Subrina into Tardis loving Whovians? S1 Ep 8008 - It's Possible: From Brandy to Burnham

The Sistas discuss the impact of the 1997 TV movie Cinderella, starring Brandy Norwood and Whitney Houston, on multiple generations of Black women. The beauty of diversity is the main theme of this memorable TV event. Did the Whitney Houston production of this classic fairy tale with its color-blind cast help lay the foundation for Black leading ladies to come? We draw a line from Brandy's Princess Throne to Burnham's Captain's chair and ask, "Do science fiction and fantasy productions of today do 'color-blind' as well as this 1997 gem?
