Show Notes

Wayne Coolwell, a trailblazing Indigenous broadcaster and photographer, passed away last year. His extensive photo collection, capturing First Nations stories across Australia, is now on display at the State Library of Queensland. Coolwells photography journey began in 1968 with a box brownie camera, inspired by his mothers National Geographic magazines. He built a career at the ABC, launching their first Indigenous current affairs show and setting up sports broadcasting in Darwin. His work during the 1990s, a boom time for Aboriginal voices, told deep stories celebrating Indigenous excellence, identity, and everyday heroes. His book My Kind of People features portraits and tales from First Nations contributors to Aussie culture. The exhibit, opening this Saturday, showcases Coolwells ability to turn personal pride into a shared history.
