Show Notes
Former National Trust Tasmania director, Matthew Paul Smithies, pleads not guilty to stealing over $150,000 worth of historic items from the organization. Smithies, aged 63, faces charges for taking more than 30 objects between 2014 and 2021 while leading the group. The case was unsealed after a court suppression order was lifted, and Smithies was first charged in November 2023. He served as managing director from 2014 to 2021, resigning in mid-2021. Smithies entered his not guilty plea in May 2024, and the case is now in the Supreme Court.
