Show Notes

Researchers in Western Australia are pioneering a groundbreaking initiative to eradicate invasive house mice on Browse Island using drones. The seventeen-hectare island, located 450 kilometers off Broome, has been overrun by these rodents since the late 1800s. In October 2021, teams dropped over 700 kilograms of green bait pellets from a New Zealand hexacopter to target every mouse and protect seabird colonies. The mice, likely introduced during guano mining or by fishers, have decimated the islands ecosystem by eating seabird eggs and disrupting breeding. Conservationists from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Monash University spent seven years addressing the issue. After the first drop, teams monitored bait uptake and followed up with a second scattering. If successful, Browse Island could return to its former glory as a thriving seabird haven.
