CIT CEOs Hiring Scrutinized: Boards Trust, Lawmakers Frustration, and Ministers Review

The public hearing into the hiring of Canberra Institute of Technology CEO Margot McNeill was cancelled this week, as an ongoing investigation continues. McNeill, who started her role in June 2025, had previously faced a misconduct investigation at TAFE New South Wales over conflicts of interest in jobs and contracts. The CIT board was unaware of this probe during her recruitment.

Board chair Kate Lundy revealed that the board trusted the information and references provided, including the claim that TAFE had shifted McNeill to a special project. However, they only learned the full story later, once TAFE cleared her to share it. McNeill is now challenging the findings in court.

Lawmakers are expressing frustration, pointing fingers at the limited recruitment questions posed by the firm hired for the process. Independent MLA Thomas Emerson described it as a miss, suggesting broader checks on misconduct probes should have caught this, especially after CITs last CEO was involved in corruption.

Skills Minister Michael Pettersson has called for an independent review of the boards actions, acknowledging that responses to concerns have been slow. He supports the boards ability to rebuild trust but admits to the slow pace on heavy issues like anonymous tips.

As the inquiry continues and no word on other witnesses has been released, the saga at CIT remains a topic of interest for all.
