Show Notes

Aunty Rhoda Roberts, a pioneering figure in Australias arts scene and the originator of the Welcome to Country tradition, has passed away at 66. This Widjabul Wieybal elder from the Bundjalung Nation dedicated her life to advocating for First Nations artists in major events nationwide. Roberts career was marked by numerous firsts, including being the first Aboriginal host on mainstream television and the inaugural head of Indigenous programming at the Sydney Opera House. She also served as SBSs first Elder-in-residence and directed key Indigenous elements of the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony. Despite facing racism growing up in Lismore, Roberts remained committed to her culture, dance, and language. She transitioned from nursing to acting, producing, and directing to amplify Indigenous voices. In her later years, Roberts continued creating and advising on festivals like Vivid Sydney, serving as cultural lead for the Koori Mail, and earning top honors, including the Order of Australia in 2016. Roberts legacy includes formalizing Welcome to Country ceremonies and elevating First Nations excellence on global stages, ensuring their stories shine for generations to come.
