Show Notes
Dr. Naomi Mayers, known as Aunty Nay, revolutionized Aboriginal healthcare nationwide before her passing at eighty-four. Born in 1941, she became a Yorta Yorta elder and a pioneer in community-controlled medical services. After co-founding Australias first Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern in 1972, she served as CEO for forty-five years. Aunty Nay dispatched teams of healthcare professionals to remote areas, sparking services in Broome, Cairns, Perth, and Brisbane. She handed control back to communities, proving Aboriginal health could thrive on its own terms. Beyond health, she helped launch the Aboriginal Childrens Service, Housing Company, and Australias first Legal Service. Her close friend and fellow trailblazer Ann Weldon, a Wiradjuri woman, died just a day after her. Their fight reshaped lives, and that community fire still burns bright today.
