ABC Staff Launch 24-Hour Strike Over Pay and Conditions; Flagship Shows to Air BBC Content

ABC staff, including journalists and workers, are set to strike for 24 hours starting at 11 a.m. AEDT on Wednesday, protesting against the broadcasters latest pay offer. The strike will run until the same time on Thursday, with flagship shows like seven thirty, A.M., P.M., The World Today, and Radio National Breakfast going off air, replaced by BBC content.

The majority of staff rejected the three-year pay deal, which offered a 3.5% rise in the first year, 3.25% for the next two, and a $1,000 bonus for ongoing and fixed-term employees. Union leaders argue that the offer is below inflation and leaves many staff job insecure due to too many short-term contracts.

Managing director Hugh Marks apologized to listeners and acknowledged some contract issues, but expects strikers to return for major breaking news. Negotiations continue, but a wide gap remains between management and unions.
