Should we begin with stories from its magnificent tradition, which are filled with accounts of major battles won through the intercession of Our Lady of Czestochowa, and of the generals who dedicated their troops and their battles to Our Lady, who wore the breastplate of Our Lady as they went into battle, and then came back after their victories to thank Our Lady, and give Her complete credit for their conquest?Or would you like to know about Lech Walesa, who had been the head of Solidarity, and became the first president of Poland after the fall of communism? He was originally in charge of the workers’ union. For organizing the workers against communism, he was imprisoned by the communists. When he was released, he lost his job and took on odd jobs, continuing to fight against communism. He became the leader of solidarity and was again imprisoned in 1981. In 1982, he was released and in 1983, he won the Nobel Peace Prize, which he presented to Our Lady at the Shrine. A very pious man, we had the privilege of attending a private Mass with him in the presidential palace.Or should we begin with the miraculous tradition by which this painting found its way from a little home in Jerusalem to Czestochowa, Poland, 1300 years later? The results: Bernard grew up obedient, brave, hardworking and surprisingly unspoiled, not unlike his other siblings.He was one of seven children: Guy, Gerard, Humbeline and Nivard (who were all declared Blessed), Andrew and Bartholomew. All were intelligent and had the finest education. But whereas his brothers engaged in arts of knighthood, possibly preparing for military careers or knighthood, Bernard entered Châtillon on the Seine pursuing a career as a secular canon. Even then he showed the spirit of a future contemplative, choosing to be alone. He excelled, rising above all the dreams and aspirations his parents had for him. He was an outstanding student! We must remember that she was with Him throughout His life, from the day He was born, through His early years, then His public ministry, to the day He was crucified. She had to have grieved terribly when He was taken from her.We believe that when Our Lord Jesus rose from the dead, the first person He came to was His dear Mother Mary, even before appearing to the women at the tomb. If that is so, He may have given her the reason, at that time, why she had to stay on this earth. The only thing that makes sense would be for her to remain as a support system for the Apostles and disciples during these early days of the Church. Every time they looked at her, they would see Jesus. She was the living representative of Our Lord here on earth. They could draw strength from her. But what a price He was asking her to pay. He had to know that her only desire was to be with Him. To stay on the earth while He left her was breaking a lifelong bond. Did Our Lord go to Mary and ask His most precious Mother to sacrifice precious time with Him, time when she could be with Him in Paradise, in order to nourish and protect the early Church? Was He entreating her to deprive herself of the Beatific Vision, for however long it would take for the Apostles to feel secure without her? If so, one thing we know; she said Yes again; because that always was, and still is, what Mary does; she says yes. Send us Fan MailAs the Feast of Pentecost was approaching, the sacristan of the Church, Dom Garnier, made a special repository for the Blessed Sacrament, for the time when Our Lord Jesus would be exposed to the Faithful. He did the same thing every year; but this year, he made it just a little more special. He set up a small Altar, in front of the choir rail, by placing a table on the Gospel side of the Church. He covered it with a table cloth on which he placed a Tabernacle. On the Altar, he placed a corporal with a silver Monstrance, whose base was attached to a sacred stone,6 upon it. He attached the small Altar to the choir rail, to provide strength and security. In back of the temporary Altar was a red cloth, which hung for the entire three days. In front of the table, attached to the table cloth was the Papal Bull from Pope Clement VIII, granting the indulgences, and a letter from the local bishop, Msgr. Rye, which authorized the publication of the indulgences. There is an ancient section there, called the Borgo Vado near the Po river. They never knew if they would be flooded by a sudden rise in the river, or if their men would be caught in the current, and pulled underwater. The inhabitants have always had strong faith. Here, we found not only the Lord through the Miracle of the Precious Blood, but His Mother, Our Lady of the Precious Blood. We had been given this Miracle of the Eucharist, to research, by Father Giannini1 back in 1981, but it took till 1992 for us to go and discover this remarkable way, our Lord and His Mother chose to touch and reach us. This Miracle took place in 1171; Father Giannini told us of it in 1981, 810 years later. And now, 823 years after the Miracle, we are bringing it to you. Why now? Matthew 28:19-20Family, we have a Treasure, of so great a magnitude it has kept our Church alive and strong and protected against millenniums of struggle with the devil who has been trying to destroy us since he tempted Jesus on the Mount of Temptation in Jericho. And how has He been able to keep that promise to us, that promise of being with us, living within our souls, giving us strength to stand up against the powers of hell? He is always with us in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood, the Eucharist. He gave us that gift freely while He was on earth. He was actually preparing us for the time when He would not be with us physically. At Capharnaum He taught us: “I Myself am the living bread, come down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever; the bread I will give is My Flesh, for the life of the world. [1]”And then on Holy Thursday evening, in the upper room in Jeerusalem, He handed each of the Apostles bread, blessed and broken. “Then taking bread and giving thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying: ‘This is My Body to be given for you. Do this as a remembrance of Me.’ He did the same with the cup after eating, saying as He did so: ‘This Cup is the New Covenant in My Blood which will be shed for you. Send us Fan MailSaint Juliana FalconieriThe name Falconieri is famous in church annals. The uncle of St. Juliana, St. Alexis Falconieri, is one of the Seven Founders of the Servite Order. He was very instrumental in the upbringing of St. Juliana, her father having died when she was very young.It was obvious to her mother and uncle that Juliana had a vocation from the time she was a very young child. She was not interested in material things, or grooming herself in order to find a husband. Her mother chided her about not taking her sewing spinning wheel lessons seriously. Juliana was not concerned. Finally at age 15, Juliana let it be known to all that she fully intended to give her life over to Our Lord in His service. Her mother Riguardata was not happy at all with this decision, but Juliana was extremely strong willed.She was trained by her uncle Alexis, and invested into the Servite Order by St. Philip Benizi in the Church of Annunziata in Florence, for which her parents had paid to have built. Juliana founded the order of Servites nuns, and became the first superior. She never asked her ladies to mortify themselves more than Juliana. As a matter of fact, no one was able to keep up with her zeal, or mortification. She hindered her health greatly. Because of this, at the end of her life, her stomach was so weakened that, on her death bed at age 70, she was not able to receive Our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist.THE MIRACLEThe Saint lay on her death bed. She grieved that she was not able to receive the Lord in the Eucharist. She was very loved by the community, and the priest in attendance at the end of her life. She still had a very strong will. She convinced the priest, Fr. James de Campo Reggio, to bring the Eucharist to her bedside, so that she could at least SEE Her Lord before she died. The priest gave in.When he brought the Blessed Sacrament into the room, she was obsessed with the desire to touch Him somehow. She pleaded with the priest to allow her to at least kiss the Host. He refused. She waited a little longer. It was very obvious to all that she was nearing death. She begged the priest to put a corporal on her chest, and just lay the Lord gently on her chest, near her heart. This could very well be called THE EUCHARISTIC MIRACLE OF LANCIANO II, because what we call the Miracle of Offida actually happened in Lanciano in the year 1273. Every Tuesday night we had devotions to Our Lady of Perpetual HelpAccording to tradition, Our Lady of Perpetual Help is considered the oldest Icon in the Church. It is believed that the first Icon of the Virgin of the Passion (or Our Lady of Perpetual Help) was in fact painted by St. Luke. And who better than he to paint this sorrowful image of Mother and Son; for St. Luke, of all the Gospel writers, wrote most personally of the Lord in His infancy up to His death on the Cross. So much so, with details that only the Mother of Jesus could know, the likelihood is that Our Lady, Herself, must have shared them with him.It is further believed that St. Luke painted the Icon of Our Blessed Mother and Her Son Jesus, while She was still in Jerusalem. When he showed the finished painting to Her, it is said, She blessed him and the Icon, saying, Her grace would accompany the Icon. And so it has, with countless miracles accompanying the Icon wherever it has been venerated, asking the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The bright Host, still suspended over her head, descended onto the Paten. The priest took this as a sign that Imelda was to be given her First Holy Communion. He administered the Lord to her. She swooned, and went into an ecstacy, from which she never returned.She died that same day.Thus, her first Communion was also to be her last.
