Israel has intercepted two cruise missiles believed to be fired by the Houthi militant group from Yemen, raising concerns about the security of the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The strait, which translates as Gate of Tears, is a narrow and treacherous waterway at the bottom of the Red Sea through which 10 per cent of the world's oil passes. Combined with the Strait of Hormuz, 30 per cent of global oil supplies could be at risk from the expanding Middle East conflict, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio faces diplomatic resistance from G7 allies over calls to protect shipping routes.
