Desi Freeman, Australia's most wanted fugitive, was fatally shot by police after a 216-day manhunt following his murder of two police officers during a search warrant execution at his Paupunker property on 26 August. The fugitive opened fire on 10 attending officers, killing Detective Leading Senior Constable Neil Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim Devart Hothart before fleeing into dense bushland. Police located Freeman at a rural hideout approximately 200 kilometres from Paupunker, where he was shot after failing to surrender peacefully during a three-hour standoff.
